At present MB Server creates music artist and album nfo's using the standard nfo format used for Movies / TV Series which XBMC can't read in relation to music. XBMC uses a separate nfo format and series of tags for Albums / Artist nfo's as outlined here:

EDIT: I've attached an Artist nfo created and exported via XBMC and one created by MB below:

<biography>Marshall Bruce Mathers III (born October 17, 1972),  better known by his stage name Eminem/Slim Shady is an American rapper and record producer.  Eminem learned his trade while growing up in Detroit, United States, and quickly gained popularity in 1999 with his major-label album, The Slim Shady LP, which won a Grammy Award for Best Rap Album. The following album, The Marshall Mathers LP, became the fastest-selling solo album in the United States history. The Marshall Mathers LP and his third album, The Eminem Show, also won Grammy Awards, making Eminem the first artist to win Best Rap Album for three consecutive LPs. He then won the award again in 2010 for his album Relapse, giving him a total of 11 Grammys in his career. In 2002, he won the Academy Award for Best Original Song for "Lose Yourself" from the film, 8 Mile, in which he also played the lead. "Lose Yourself" would go on to become the longest running #1 hip-hop single. Eminem then went on hiatus after touring in 2005. He released his first album since 2004's Encore, titled Relapse, on May 15, 2009. Relapse Part 2 was due to be released in 2010, but scrapped it due to media and fans and so he decided to release his latest album Recovery. Eminem is the best-selling artist of the decade on the US Nielsen SoundScan, and has sold more than 80 million albums worldwide to date, making him one of the best-selling music artists in the world. Eminem was ranked 82nd on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All-Time.He was also named the Best Rapper Ever by Vibe magazine. Including his work with D12, Eminem has achieved nine #1 albums on the Billboard Top 200, 7 solo and 2 with D12. Eminem has had 12 number one singles worldwide. In December 2009 Eminem was named the Artist of the Decade by Billboard magazine. His albums The Eminem Show, The Marshall Mathers LP, and Encore (in order) ranked as the 3rd. 7th, and 40th best album of the 2000-2009 decade by Billboard magazine. According to Billboard, Eminem has two of his albums among the top five highest selling albums of the 2000s. In the UK, Eminem has sold over 12.5 million records.     User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License and may also be available under the GNU FDL.</biography>

Sorry @@Luke I've edited my first post with both an nfo created by XBMC and one created by MB to serve as a comparison. There are quite a few differences in tags, as an example: MB uses <Plot> and <Outline> whereas XBMC requires <Biography> for an artist description.

In addition to different tag names, some tags are not present in the MB created nfo that are used by many of the XBMC themes, eg. Aeon Nox / MQ3,4,5 themes can make use of the <yearsactive> tags in several of the layouts for music artists if the data is present in the nfo.

The full list of tags required by XBMC for Artist and Album nfo files are here: http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=NFO_files/Music

Unfortunately I'm at work at the moment and haven't got a copy of any Album nfo files for comparison but the tags are listed in the link above.

I've also just done some testing with Music artwork and noticed a few things. XBMC uses a different artwork naming convention for Music than it does for TV Series and Movies, so the following would need to be changed to allow XBMC to read them:

  • For the cd disc image, 'disc.png' needs to be named 'cdart.png' for XBMC to recognize it (wheras for TV / Movies it is 'disc.png')
  • The artist image in the root of the Artist folder is currently named 'poster.jpg' but needs to be 'folder.jpg'
  • The album cover image in the album folder is currently called 'poster.jpg' but needs to be 'folder.jpg'

So the structure would look like:

Music (folder)

-  Eminem (folder)

- - folder.jpg

- - fanart.jpg

- - logo.png

- - artist.nfo

- - The Eminem Show (folder)

- - - - folder.jpg

- - - - cdart.png

- - - - album.nfo

I just did a fresh scrape and export from XBMC on a test folder containing an artist and album:

The Artist folder:

528b37d57e997_ArtistFolder.jpg

The Album folder (in this case The Eminem Show as shown above):

XBMC uses the <review> tag for Album descriptions within the Album.nfo. I've attached an Album.nfo below I exported from XBMC for the Beatles album - "With the Beatles":

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="yes" ?>
<album>
    <title>With The Beatles</title>
    <artist>The Beatles</artist>
    <genre>Rock & Roll</genre>
<review>With The Beatles is the second studio album by the English rock group The Beatles. It was released on 22 November 1963 on Parlophone, and was recorded four months after the band's debut Please Please Me. The album features eight original compositions (seven by Lennon–McCartney and "Don't Bother Me", George Harrison's first recorded solo composition and his first released on a Beatles album) and six covers (mostly of Motown and R&B hits). Most of the songs from the album were released in the United States by Capitol Records as the Meet The Beatles! LP on 20 January 1964, and the remaining that were not, featured on their next US album, The Beatles' Second Album. The album was also released in November 1963 by Capitol Records in Canada, with a slight change to the title Beatlemania! With The Beatles. This release has the distinction of being the first LP of Beatles material released in North America, pre-dating the Capitol US Meet The Beatles! and the Vee Jay Records Introducing... The Beatles LPs by two months. The LP had advance orders of a half million and sold another half million by September 1965, making it the second album to sell a million copies in the UK, after the soundtrack to the 1958 film South Pacific. With The Beatles stayed at the top of the charts for 21 weeks, displacing Please Please Me, so that The Beatles occupied the top spot for 51 consecutive weeks. It even reached number 11 in the "singles charts" (because at the time UK charts counted all records sold, regardless of format). EMI Australia did not receive the cover art, and used a caricature of the band in a similar style to the black-and-white photograph on other releases. The Beatles were unaware of this until fans showed them the cover during their only Australian tour, and informed the EMI publicity staff that they were not pleased with the substitution. On 26 February 1987, With The Beatles was officially released on compact disc (in mono only, catalogue number CDP 7 46436 2). Having been available only as an import in the US in the past, the album was also issued domestically in the US on LP and cassette on 21 July 1987. Along with the rest of the Beatles' canon, it was re-released on CD in newly re-mastered stereo and mono versions on 9 September 2009. In 2003, the album was ranked number 420 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.         User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License and may also be available under the GNU FDL.</review>

Fantastic news!, happy to help. If you need anything else please let me know.

what is style? the music equivalent of tag?

Yeah, I believe it just pulls the tags from the last.fm page, http://www.last.fm/music/Nightwish (tags located under the images at the top). They act as sort of sub genres and are displayed in most XBMC themes beside the actor biography.

So I have done some testing with XBMC and the music support in the latest Server/ XBMC Saver and it all seems to be working wonderfully except for a couple of minor issues:

The Artist and Album descriptions in the nfo are populating but it seems to be pulling through any links in the source artist / album description and placing the full link into the nfo, as shown in the screenshot below:

528deca58c02a_Capture.jpg

I've found that if I let MB scrape the album, then go into MB Server and cut the text from the 'Overview' box and then paste it straight back in, then save, it seems to remove all the links.  Is it possible for MB Server to maybe pull the text from the source as plain text, ignoring the links?

One other minor issue (one which XBMC suffers from aswell) is that any time a semicolon is used it is prefixed with '&quot', like in the screenshot below:

528dee8f45bf1_1Capture.jpg

XBMC's internal scrapers suffered from this aswell, which I always remedied with a manual find & replace on the nfo's, but I was just curious if this could be filtered out during the initial scrape?

Thanks again for all your hard work on providing support for us XBMC users, it's really appreciated.

Thanks @@Luke, just tested the XBMC update and the links no longer appear, works great.

I made a slight error above, it is the single quotation marks ' that are being replaced with "  not semicolons, apologies.

we like the links because some clients are able to display the html content and allow you to click them. the reason they disappear when you edit is simply because the web client editor hasn't added support for that kind of raw html editing. as-is now, does it cause any issues in xbmc?

I haven't had a chance to test xbmc as I am at work (will test tonight) but the Nfo's no longer contain the html links, just text.  As XBMC just reads whatever text is in the NFO it should be fine.

I will test tonight and edit this post to confirm.

Hey @@Luke, I've just imported some test music into XBMC and it now loads fine, no html links at all. Except for that " scattered throughout in place of the ' symbols all nfo's now load fine.

In the interim, to any XBMC users, i've written a quick Powershell script to run through the NFO files and replace at " with the ' symbol and remove [1][2] (as many of the Music Brainz wikipedia scrapes have)  just let me know if anyone else is interested.

As always, a big thank you to @@Luke for being so inviting to the XBMC community and supporting us through the entire MB Server beta.

Nice selection of screenshots, (few solid bands in there too  ;)),  should really bring in the XBMC users.

I've added a comment to that thread and thrown a few mentions into the XBMC IRC channel over the last few days.

@@Luke, as I mentioned in the thread over at XBMC, is there a Media Browser IRC channel? If not it could be an idea, even at this hour there is 500 odd users in the XBMC channel.

Just tested it today, everything is great. So now I am using MB3 to manage metadata of my movies, TV shows and music albums. Really appreciated.

Just few minor questions about music nfo, I found that in the artist/album nfo created by MB3, some <review> tags contain "Read more about XXX on Last.fm

User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License and may also be available under the GNU FDL."

Is it due to long description found in last.fm/musicbranz? I found if the description of the album or artist is so long then this may happen in the <review> tag and it is quite weird after scanning it into XBMC. Anyway to scrape the full review into the nfo?

Besides, the style tag is not used in MB3's nfo? The style is empty after scanning the nfo created by MB3 into XBMC.

Those overviews are currently coming from last fm. I am going to switch them to a new source soon that will give us better data. we do currently populate style using tags from last fm. just depends on if they have any for the particular artist or album.
