Using Roku from Browser?

Hi Guys,

So one of my buddies has a Roku and can use it just like I use my Chromecast - select the icon in the upper right, select Roku 3 in the list, and hit play.

So I picked one up for someone I want to access my library and it works fine (I AM using the 'Emby' App) -  but when I hit play I get the message "The Operation has timed out"

What am I doing wrong? Do I have to configure something on the computer or set something up on the Roku? I am doing a manual server connection (not that Emby Connect stuff) if that makes a difference.

Settings -> System -> Screen Mirroring (beta) -> Enable Screen Mirroring.

You also need a compatible Android 4.4.2 or Windows Phone 8 device. These are listed here:

I am pretty sure both devices need to be on the same WiFi network segment as well. Works nicely on my Kindle Fire HDX.

How can I do it from a Windows browser or an iPhone?  I enabled that setting on the Roku.

As far as I am aware, it doesn't work on a Windows Browser or an iPhone. You have to have one of their supported devices.

However you might be able to use the Emby Server's remote system to control the Roku. You'll need the Emby App installed. I've never tried as the Roku Remote App has a nicer layout and is easier to use than Emby's Web Client.

Edit:

If you have an iPhone and the videos are on your phone, you can use the Play on Roku function within the Roku Remote App. This will play the Video on the roku but doesn't use Emby. You can do music, video and photos.

i thought he was referring to control from the web client, and that he tried but it timed out, no?

I don't know how that works to be honest. I never see my Rokus in the list when I click on it from within Chrome.

Yes I'm referring to the web client - When I play a video on the Roku itself I see the bar at the bottom of the web client that shows the play/pause control but they have no effect and I ultimately get the same error after pressing them. According to the user who I know this is working for, he said it just worked out the box identically to how the chromecast works.   The Roku DOES appear in the list of devices and is totally selectable.

Do you have the emby client open on the roku, when attempting to send content from the web-client remotely?

YouTube, twonky, etc can force focus of the roku into their application before accepting streams. Emby does not do this presently, you must be in the emby app on your roku first.

I've tried it both ways (with Roku app open and not) - Haven't tried since the update, I'll let you know if that fixes it.

I've never gotten an external Roku to work either controlled via web browser remote.

I can get this to work for all my LAN Roku's, any roku outside of my LAN can't seem to be controlled.
