cw-kid 192
Hi I just installed the 1 day trial version of the Media Browser Windows 8.1 app on my brothers Windows 8.1 laptop. It let me login to his Emby connect account however we just see a spinning circle for a few seconds and then the app auto minimizes itself. If you then click on the app again from the windows taskbar and open it up again, it does the same thing, spinning circle then minimizes itself again. Any one else seen this issue and know how to fix it? I've checked his laptop is up to date with the Windows updates. Thanks
Vicpa 552
Hi cw-kid, Did you try skipping connect and just use the server info and his password. The test would take connect out the equation
cw-kid 192
I didn't try that no and now I can't do anything with the Media Browser app. I think its his Windows installation that is corrupted as other apps are doing the same thing. Even Windows File Explorer just bombs out and disappears! Last time I looked at his Laptop it had Windows 8 and everything was working OK. Now its Windows 8.1 and its very unstable all round. I am running a sfc / scannow command at the moment, I have run the wsreset.exe and some app diagnostics thing from Microsoft which keeps saying the windows store cache may be damaged. I am also about to update the graphics driver from the Asus site as the diagnostics thing was complaining about a possible problem with the graphics driver. Well this is turning in to a bigger job than I had hoped.
cw-kid 192
Its a pile of crap Windows 8! Worst OS they have ever made and I've used a lot! I am still on Windows 7 on my laptop. All the Metro apps like Photos / Videos / Music etc just bomb out and minimize themselves as well. I've restored the default file associations for all these apps but hasn't help, as he was complaining he could not play some home movie videos. But these are the apps he uses from the Windows 8 start menu etc. sfc scan says its found corrupt files and then points you to a massive log file which you have to go through. I'd fecking format the thing and put Ubuntu on it if it was mine GRRR..
Lee 204
The w8 to 8.1 update killed a lot of metro apps... I had to reinstall. Can't wait for 10!!
Vicpa 552
Hi, SFC usually fixes what it can. Did it repair anything?
cw-kid 192
No SFC said it couldn't repair the corruption. There is loads of people having these same types of problems. http://helpdeskgeek.com/windows-8/fix-windows-8-app-opens-closes/ I've checked this one and all the permissions were fine. http://www.thewindowsclub.com/component-store-corruption-repair-windows-image I am currently running a command: Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth But its been on 20% for ages. If that doesn't work, I will have to try a Windows 8 Refresh and last resort I'll have to format it and put Windows back on and install and setup everything again. cw-kid 192
That process has finished and it says it has repaired corruption in the Windows Component Store. I rebooted and then tried to open the Media Browser app and I could see it said Loading and I could see some of the menus in the app but then it minimizes again same as before. When you click on the app from the taskbar it opens again and shows the Media Browser logo and a spinning circle and then it closes down again. I might run sfc /scannow again now see what it says this time. Next I am going to try this new Windows Refresh thing.
cw-kid 192
sfc finished it now says "Windows Resource Protection did not found any integrity violations". First time I ran it said there was corruption and it couldn't fix it. Media Browser app still closing itself down. cw-kid 192
Uninstalling the MB app and then reinstalling, I skipped the Emby Connect and manually setup the connect using my host name etc. App is still behaving the same as before and closing shortly after its opened. Can I swear! I am going to install Kodi Helix instead and try that remotely, as I really don't want to format this PC unless I have too. cw-kid 192
Goodnews and Badnews! In the end I've had to reset my brothers Windows 8.1 laptop. I backed up all his data and then did the Windows reset which reinstalled Windows 8 back to factory defaults, it then took a day and a half to get all the windows updates back on and upgrade again to Windows 8.1. The corruption issues have gone his Photos / Videos / Music Modern UI apps seem to be all working now and not auto closing themselves as before. However I am now unable to install the Media Browser app from the store as it say the trial has expired. I guess he will just have to buy the app to try it out now! What a horrid Windows 8 experience! And that is why I have never used it on any of my systems! MS you still suck.. Think I will use Acronis True Image now to take an image so next time it will be a ten minute restore!
cw-kid 192
Well we bought the app and it is now installed and working! The GUI looks great, he has a touch screen laptop and its nice navigating around with touch! So Kodi for 10ft and this app for 2ft viewing nice.. Vicpa 552
Hi, Glad you got it sorted!. The ui works pretty well on the 10' as well. Check out this post http://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/19908-ver-32-player-enhancements/, if you haven't already for "direct play" formats. The app is win 10 ready for mkv playback and flac. Pretty sure when 7 gets some time he will add in the wasapi audio. -vicpa
cw-kid 192
I only tried to play two movies in the Media Browser Windows 8.1 app, one was a HD 1080P MKV and it said Direct Play. The other was an SD XVID AVI and that transcoded. So can the app be used with the MCE remote control? I didn't try that. (I don't think you can with Metro apps) I have Kodi setup on his laptop as well, so he can connect the laptop to the TV via HDMI then launch Kodi and use the MCE remote for 10ft viewing. And I figured when the laptop is on his lap he can use the Windows 8.1 app and touch. Edited May 12, 2015 by cw-kid

Vicpa 552
Hi, The remote works, just change to mouse and keyboard in settings. There are still a few places were it needs tweaking. But movies and tv work pretty well.
Vicpa 552
Here are the direct play parameters for avi <DirectPlayProfile container="avi" audioCodec="mp3,ac3,eac3,mp2,pcm" videoCodec="mpeg4,msmpeg4,mjpeg" type="Video" /> Not familiar enough with avi to say, but rule of thumb. If Media Foundation can play it, the app can.
cw-kid 192
Is it possible to display the "All Movies" without them being in small blocks of A B C... Z etc ? And how do you force the app to Sync with the Emby server? Many thanks
