Sub titles with LAV

Recommended Posts

Hello,

When I had used sharks007 codecs I was able to gain access to vobsub I order to toggle sub titles. I am having a heck of a time trying to get them working in mbc now that I have switched to LAV. Could someone take a second to point me in the proper direction?

I set this up briefly on my HTPC before moving to using MPC-HC as an external player. Basically, follow this guide:

http://mediabrowser.tv/community/index.php?/topic/726-windows-media-center-internal-player-mb-classic-and-lav-filters-guide/

I had one issue... I think the guide refers to external subs rather than ones in the MKV files, so I added directvobsub instead of (or perhaps in addition to) XY VSFilter.

I'll try to check back after work; if you are still having trouble post here and I'll see if I can help.

The guide I linked to has another link to the REAL good site, hosted at thehtpc.net.  Unfortunately, that site is down for a bit, so here is a feeble attempt to get you up and running with subs in WMC without external player. Give me an A for effort, if not execution...

1. I assume you're starting with a pretty basic Win7 x64 install which seems pretty common. Minor adjustments in terms of which installers to use will be needed if you are on x86, but the steps are the same.

2. Download and install LAV filters 5.9.1 or whatever the latest is. I only bother to install the 64 bit components, if asked. I go to the doom9 web page, here: http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=156191

In the LAV video properties, I recall something about configuring it for DXVA Native, and choosing to have it put in a taskbar icon. Make sure for all three (Video, Audio, Splitter) the option about the system tray icon is checked, in the lower left of the properties window.

3. Download and install Win7DSFilterTweaker 5.9 or latest version: http://www.videohelp.com/tools/Preferred-Filter-Tweaker

Run the filter tweaker and for the various common video formats choose "use merit" and for audio formats choose "use LAV" I think.

4. Download and install the DirectVobSub package. Here is a link to the 64 bit version I think is the latest, or at least pretty recent:

http://www.videohelp.com/download/VSFilter_2.41.35_x64.exe

I don't believe any special configuration of DirectVobSub is required.

That should do you. You should be able to switch streams via the system tray icons or the right click on the video / play menu / subtitles.

Note, in the LAV splitter properties, you can configure various rules about how it should select which subs to show.

Here are some threads that may provide insights:

http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=1651210#post1651210

User Mindbomb (he's awesome) says:

that is a little known feature of lav splitter, you can tell it to display certain subs based on the audio language. set subtitle selection mode to advanced and enter eng:eng|f;eng:off;*:eng in the subtitles box. this enables only forced subs when english audio is detected and enables english subs when foreign audio is detected

Some other thoughts that may help folks:

1. I used DirectVobSub because my subs are tracks within the MKVs I'm playing. I think you need XYVSFilter if your subs are external files that need to be loaded... the thehtpc.net article had all about how to set it up, but I don't use external subs so I can't help there. Sorry!

2. When ripping stuff from disc to MKV, quite frequently the flags identifying which tracks are "Forced" and which are "Default" are messed up. You may need to either manually switch sub streams via the lav trays, or do front-end work to make sure you have the correct streams present and set to show based on your LAV splitter configuration. I'm still figuring this out from a practical perspective... I'm not quite at the nirvana stage yet so I can't provide a great solution.

3. I've had some files, notably Kill Bill part 1 (and maybe part 2, haven't tried recently) that the subs simply won't show in MPCHC without messing with their flags. They do show in VLC Player. I'm still working to learn why this is the case and what to do about it.
