Folder Sync Question

Good Day All,

I took a look around and didn't see anything that was specific so I thought I would ask. The most recent release of Emby includes folder and cloud sync options and I have seen things indicate that the client will stream from the cloud service (if a version is available there) however I was wondering if the server will serve from a folder sync the same way if a direct stream compatible version is available in a sync folder. Additionally I was just wondering how the decision is made to select one file over another (eg if the folder sync has a file that can be played by the web client however its bit rate is 4mbit/s however the client is set to 3mbit/s will the server still transcode the original file to match the 3mbit/s?)

I also was wondering if the folder sync option clears out the oldest items after the limit is exceeded?

My thought was that I could store the most recent 25 (ish) televisions shows in a format that is web client/chromecast friendly (since that is what most of my users employ) so that individuals that want to watch content that is recent wont have to deal with transcoding and I wont have to transcode the same file over and over if a few people watch the same new episode of something over the course of the first week.

Thanks!

Yes it will stream using folder synced content!

But yes it does require that the synced content fall within the client app settings and format capabilities. In a future server release you'll be able to steer users more easily to the synced versions by limiting their access to transcoding, controlling their bitrate limits, etc.

Thanks Luke,

As a quick follow up. If I only specify myself as "able to sync to this folder" will other users be able to still stream content from this sync folder however not make changes to the sync? Or do the users have to have full access to this folder in order to actually be able to play the previously converted content.

Thanks,

"When content is archived in multiple resolutions, Emby apps will automatically choose the version that is most efficient for them. This will help relieve stress on your server's CPU."

Do video files in multiple resolutions have to have the same name?

Hi.  Please see the section on "Multi-Version Movies" here: https://github.com/MediaBrowser/Wiki/wiki/Movie%20naming
