Great replies from you all.

You don't watch many tv shows do you? I only ask because game of thrones should be at the top of your list in case you haven't seen it :)

TolkienBard

Good day,

Any good recommendation for old type movies (swords movies "adventure" like LOTR, Troy, Conan,  ... etc).

I think I already have big collections of these type of movies, but for sure I like to see your good rating for these so I fine what I do not have, thanks in advanced.

My best

Swords and Sorcery adventures are some of my very favourite stories. There were a ton of them made into movies during the early 80s, but so many of them were just plain awful. I'm a little late to this conversation, so some of these may have been mentioned already. I had a look, but I could have missed them.

Yor, the Hunter from the Future

Princess Mononoke

Krull

Record of Lodoss War (OVA)

Beastmaster

Kull the Conqueror

Robin Hood (most of the incarnations will fit)

Time Bandits

Ulysses

Sinbad

Some of these are campier than others, but all of them are still rather entertaining. Some of them are even quite excellent.

I thought that was sort of a no-brainer, but I was also trying to keep it more towards the cinema rather than the television. Television shows would add probably 10 titles to my list.

I've not been in the mood for anything new lately... Aside from a couple of movies... I've simply been re-watching others I've enjoyed. Mostly action and comedy movies. Don't seem to be in the mood for drama/thriller and such at the moment.

Most of the movies discussed recently I have sitting on my server waiting to be watched... I just have to be in the right mood for them and lately all I want is easy, fun movies that don't require over thinking.

Any recommendations?

Wag the Dog

Taking Woodstock

Juno

Shottas

Trainspotting

Taxi 1-4

Forgetting Sarah Marshall

The Intouchables

I really enjoyed that show. At least now we get to enjoy Bridget Regan on Agent Carter.

She's excellent in Agent Carter :)

Dottie is definitely one of the best villains I have seen in a Marvel show/movie in quite a while.

I watched Shaft last night... the 2000 remake with Mr Samuel Mother L Fucking Jackson.

It was pretty poor... all of the characters were virtually unbelievable. The plot was poor the main characters pretty much one dimensional with no depth at all... The acting from some was simply terrible... and the main bad guy simply laughable... then there was the side bad guy who was even more laughable.

I wasn't sure if it was meant to be a comedy or not... it wasn't... I checked... It was supposed to be an action/crime/thirller... and had very little of them.

3/10... and it only gets that 3 because SLJ says motherfucker several times... Yes that's right... I rate films with SLJ in them by the MF factor.   :)

I though he was a perfect Shaft. I agree that the other non-SLJ elements needed more

SLJ nailed the part of Shaft. I also appreciated the cameo appearance by Roundtree. Outside of that, the movie was very weak. There are only so many takes of SLJ strutting about like a bad-ass one can put into a film before it is overdone. Shaft relied on those scenes/shots to basically carry the whole movie.

Heckler

Having one of my bouts of restlessness at the moment... Unable to sleep.

So I've just finished watching Hector and the search for happiness... and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Bear with on the next bit... because although i'm about to digress... it will make sense in the end.

You see, it's been a shitty week, my car failed it's MoT badly and was going to cost anything up to £830 to sort out... by taking the car away, buying parts online and in one case used from a breakers, I have managed to get that bill down by luck and good fortune to around £380.  First the brake calliper that was binding was fine once new discs and pads were fitted and it was cleaned up. Saving me £130 on a new calliper, original cost for all new pads and discs at the rear was £161, total cost to me is £76 fitted.... The knackered hub and wheel bearing which was going to cost around £300, was found on ebay for £42 plus another £40 for a local garage to fit it.  The two tyres were going to be £120 for basic budget ones, got the tyres for £70 and fitting is £27 saving me a further £23... The tracking needs doing and obviously the cost of the MoT add another £70 to the bill.

So even though I'd cut that bill in half at a time when I cannot be without the car (need to get to Birmingham for a surgical consult in 10 days which may finally help solve some of my health issues and enable me to eventually walk properly again).. I don't work, am on sickness benefits and have no money to spare... So even a £380 bill is a real struggle to sort out.

Then I find that my office PC has some how gotten infected with the Win64\svcminer.A rootkit... and after 6hrs of trying to clean it... Have finally resigned myself to the fact it's going to be a wipe, format, deep scrub and reinstalling of windows.

So... the last 8 days have been a little shitty for me... I know people have it worse, but this is my whinge dammit.  :P

So why then.. at almost 5am in the morning... extremely tired, cold and shivering did I finish watching the film and feel a wave of pleasure washing over me. There was a quite sense of satisfaction... Gawd it sounds like I'm describing watching porn....

It's not a great film... it's possibly not one that I would watch again because you wouldn't get the same sense of enjoyment afterwards... Maybe it's even because I desperately wanted something to cheer me up.

But this film did just that... and whilst the effects may not last long, I thoroughly enjoyed watching it.

Simon Pegg was excellent in his portrayal of Hector... and the rest of the supporting cast were great too. Cameo's from Jean Reno, Christopher Plummer which were unexpected for me.

It may not appeal to all, maybe you just have to be in the right frame of mind to get the most out of it... I was expecting more drama than comedy and yet there were many moments that had me chuckling away and others which had me almost tearing up.

Yes the premise is a little silly, the plot at times unconvincing and the outcome predictable... But where that would grate with me a huge amount in most movies... I honestly didn't mind this time around... It's quiet charm won me over.

7/10... I was going to give it an 8... but I felt the fact it's not a movie that I think would stand up to repeat viewings is enough to drop a point.

I'm a bit behind the times but I watched John Wick Saturday night.  Awesome "shoot em' up" movie.  Not much story but who needs one with such fun action.

Saw   Exodus: Gods and Kings last night.

Save yourself from wasting two and a half hours... it was an utter snoozefest.  I can't quite tell if it was actually seriously telling a biblical story or simply mocking it. The two leads  were dreadful, some of the worst acting I've seen from either. The other so called big name actors in this.. namely Sigourney Weaver and Ben Kingsley had barely more than a few words in the entire thing.... and the depiction of god was so stupid.

In fact... everytime  God was on screen talking... I kept hearing the voice of Ultron talking to the Kree Ronin from Guardians of the Galaxy... I just heard the words Your demeanor is that of a pouty child and you bore me  running through my head every time.

3/10... It does have one positive... It's better than last years laugh fest that was Noah and is actually still a better love story than Twilight.

I agree Heckler.  For a film trying to be such a huge epic, the whole thing was just... flat.  If you want to see a film version of this story, watch "The Ten Commandments" instead.

I completely skip these films that are flops... I imagine that if I don't watch it, they'll stop making crap.

But of course that won't stop them.
