I wanted to ask if I am missing anything or if there are any updates coming to address the issue I am having with my music folder structure.

I have several artists in my library. It is rare you will see a ton of songs from one artist. So I created mood (playlists) folders. This works great for me, as I can just play the folder according to my mood. The challenge I am having is it creates havoc with the server naming convention. The server will grab the first artist from the folder and group the entire folder under the name of that artist album.

Instead of redoing my entire library and manually maintaining playlists, is there anything I am missing or any updates that will help this in the future?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Here is the file layout:

Drive>Music Folder>Mood Folder>Songs

The server then grabs one song from the folder and uses that artist album for all the songs in the mood folder. Here is what it looks like in the server.

right i see, because you haven't separated them into albums? is that correct?

if that is the case then you might just have to live with or separate them into albums. or you could manually edit album metadata to whatever you like, although you'll have to lock them afterwards to prevent the server from changing them. but of course that's a very manual process.

I do not have album folders. But what you mentioned above would work for what I am trying to do. I only have like 25 mood playlists.

The challenge I am having now is the lock is not working. I set-up one of my mood folders and add album images and back drops, etc. I then lock the metadata and transfer in my songs.

As soon as the library updates, it takes the first artist and fills in the album information into the locked album (mood playlist) I created.

Any suggestions?

we'll look at it for the next release. the lock does work as a whole but this particular case is so uncommon it probably just hasn't been tested

Thanks! :D Putting songs into folders has been a quick way for me to manage playlists. Many of my artists do not have an album, they just release single tracks. If you listen to a lot of EDM, this is probably the best solution for you.

no idea what not working means. i know that at some point a month or two ago i looked at this and ensured that album and artist fields that were locked were not getting changed.

Sorry, I should have been more specific. The lock feature is still not working. As soon as you add music to the folder, it updates the folders attributes in Media Browser to the first song in the folder. The lock is also removed with the update.

  • I have thousands of artists in my music collection. Most artists only have a few songs
  • I listen to EDM (Electronic Dance Music) and very few artists have full albums
  • There are many different genres in EDM
  • So to make it easier, I have put all my songs into mood folders
  • This allows me to listen to several artists and several genres with the same vibe I like, depending on my mood :D
  • I typically just open this folder and play it on a random shuffle

Until Media Browser has a "Smart Playlist” option that can monitor a folder for updates, I was hoping to take advantage of how Media Browser currently sorts music.

  • When I first added my music collection, it added every artist in one folder into an album folder and used the first song it recognized as the album metadata for every song in the folder (Please see the image above).
  • I then tried to implement the following work around. I created a new music mood folder and set it up in the metadata manager in the server
  • I added a custom cover and backdrop, information on the type of music in the folder and then checked the “Lock this item to prevent future changes” option in the server (Please see the image below)
  • As soon as I add songs back into the folder, the lock is removed and it creates an album according to the first song I add to the folder.

Is there any way to prevent the lock feature from disengaging after songs are added to the folder?

Something else you can do, though it might be more effort, is to make your own Playlist folder (rather than the default one). Then, make "albums", your moods, as folders, add your art, and paste a shortcut to each song for that folder. Here's what one of mine looks like ...

@@PBzeer I added a screenshot of what I do. I have a folder on my server for each playlist, and then as I add songs…Emby will automatically update the album (playlist). The only downside is it will sort the songs by song number and not by title. However with the shuffle album feature, I am a very happy camper :D

I often have songs from one album in several different playlists, so this system works best for me as it is quick and easy.
