Q: External players and content type selection

Hi folks,

 

Let's say I'm using MB Classic and I want to vary my choice of internal versus external player by more than just filename extension (.mkv) or broad content type (currently it looks just like 2D versus two types of 3D are supported).

 

I can think of some specific use cases where I would like more flexibility. Perhaps this is already possible, and I'm just unclear on how to do it. Let's assume for now that all content is in .MVK containers.

 

1. I'd like to be able to select different players based on the video codec the content was created with. So, making up an example, let's use the internal player for H264/AVC but use MPC-HC for VC-1 and VLC to play mpeg2 video. To do this now I think I would have to manually re-name the extensions for example .MKV_AVC or .MKV_MP2, hack the registry to convince windows these are playable, and finally configure it in Media Browser Classic.

 

2. I might like to use native windows media foundation for non-subtitle material but MPC-HC for material with forced subs I want to enable. Again, a trick like what I did in 1 worked ages ago, and I documented it on the forum/community some years back. I'd rather use MB-Classic's awareness of the content details to help direct player selection.

 

Is there a way to do this now other than the hacks I've suggested, or could this be added perhaps?

No, there is no way to do this any other way.

 

I can't say that we will be enhancing this any more in MBC.
