Regarding the Default Option for Chinese Subtitles After Version 4.9.1.80

Since the server version was upgraded to Version 4.9.1.80, the default audio and subtitle options changed to “Chinese, Chinese (China), Chinese (Taiwan), Chinese (Hong Kong SAR)”. As a result, Mandarin audio tracks and Chinese subtitles are no longer recognized correctly. I personally believe this is because the internal names of audio tracks and subtitles in our movie videos are not labeled in Chinese.

Our video files use English names for audio tracks and subtitles: Mandarin audio tracks are mostly labeled “Chinese,” Simplified Chinese subtitles as “Chinese Simplified” or “Simplified,” while Traditional Chinese subtitles for Taiwan and Hong Kong regions are named “Chinese Traditional” and “Traditional.” Therefore, I recommend reverting to the pre-4.8 design or adding a custom input option to improve the program's automatic recognition of audio tracks and subtitles.

1、This screenshot shows the subtitle configuration in Personal Preferences, where the subtitle language has been explicitly set to “Chinese/Chinese (China)”.

2、This screenshot shows the movie content page, where the subtitle option displays as “off.” In the previous version 4.8, the program would automatically select subtitles based on the subtitle language configuration in Preferences. However, subtitles are no longer selected automatically.

3、This screenshot confirms that the movie has subtitle files, but the program does not automatically select the subtitles; instead, you need to manually choose them.

The subtitle track is not marked as default. Either change the track to mark it as default, or use the smart subtitle mode.

        Yes, my subtitles are already marked as default, and I'm using Smart Subtitle Mode, but many movies still fail to automatically select subtitles according to the settings.

This issue occurs because the new version of the EMBY program no longer includes the “Simplified Chinese” option.

2、This screenshot also shows that my Chinese Simplified subtitles have been marked as default.

Therefore, I personally believe this issue stems from the new version of the program removing the “Chinese Simplified” option that existed in previous versions.

It is still there. It is just the browser giving it a different name. I think it is the (China) one.

I tested it using your method. For most videos, subtitles can be selected automatically, but a small number of videos still cannot be selected automatically.

1、This screenshot is from one of the videos where subtitles cannot be selected automatically, and the subtitle option remains set to “off.”

 

2、This screenshot shows the subtitle tag information and properties for this video. The subtitle name and tags are correct, but automatic adaptation still fails.

Smart does not always select subtitles. If the audio languages matches your audio preferences, then it thinks you don't need subtitles.
