Making an attempt to come back to Emby after moving to Plex 6 months ago I’ve given up trying to make the Apple TV work for the family so giving it a go using my Nvidia Shield.

Key plugin used is Virtual TV. On the standard Android app, 9 times out of 10 when initiating playback all I get is a black screen with a 5 minute, 2 second program length running down. This run time is common to any video it’s attempting to play and when it reaches the end the app says the next program is playing but again, just a black screen with a 5:02 run time.

Android TV specific app has no issue playing properly.

Reading that the Android TV is being depreciated make this issue even more concerning if I am to truly commit to coming back to Emby.

Log attached.

Just don't install both Android apps on the same device. They are conflicting each other when using remote commands. Although your 5 minute lenght is a bit unusual, it should be 1 minute only. Will look at your log later.

I’ll give that a try later today @pünktchenalthough I THINK at one point I only had the Android app installed alone and it still occurred? I could be wrong though.

Will let you know.

Actually had a sec to try it right now. Only the regular Android app installed. Still happening although I can confirm that the black screen time line is 1 minute as you mentioned.
Restarting Emby server now to see if that makes a difference.

Restarting the server got playback working. Will use the Android app exclusively today to see if this pops up again.
thanks

Still doing it. Was watching a program, stopped playback, then Emby actually crashed.

played around in Android for a few minutes then relaunched Emby and started a channel. Black screen with 1 minute play timeline. Just let it go this time and after a second screen flicker (like a new program was starting), playback actually started.

new logs attached.

Hi, how does the web app compare?

Web app plays as expected.

it seems to be guide related? After having the tv off for an hour, coming back and initiating playback it has the issue. Looking at the info screen I noticed that the show title didn’t display a season number or episode number. Once it went through the 2, minute long black screens, playback started and the display now shows season and episode.

note also that playback started from the beginning of the episode even though the guide had the progress at about 3 minutes in. The web app started playback at the correct spot. If I stop playback on the Android app then start again it starts playback at the correct spot.

What if you force close the app and restart?

What sort order did you set for that channel?

The guide display rounds to full minutes, so you were probably still in the range you can set under playback settings - general.

Also please make sure to delete the AndroidTV app from Emby's device manager.

Random shows, random episodes if that’s what you are referring to @pünktchen

if I remember correctly the show was about 3 minutes in yet it still played from the beginning once it finally started playing. I think I have it at the default 120 seconds so let’s assume this part is not the problem since it was so close to the time.

AndroidTV app is not in the device list.

Will definitely try that next time I go to watch tv.

While you're here, why not lend your support to @pünktchen's request to get an official emby solution to start playback from a specific position natively. Just like the first post in the thread:

Doesn’t it already do the OP posting requests? +1 for seasonal porograming/block programming though!

Force quitting works @Luke. Sort of supports my suspicion that it’s a guide issue?

@pünktchenif I let the Nvidia shield sit turned off for any length of time and fire up Emby this happens. Can reproduce 100% of the time.

see the screenshots to illustrate what I’m talking about above. Notice the program title..

this does not ever happen when I revert to the AndroidTV app.

also note, this is not channel specific. Happens on all channels I have set up, one of which I have set up as “random shows/ordered episodes”.

I'll try to reproduce it, but i do not think the guide display issue has any impact, because the plugin gets the program entries from the database, not from the client. It's more likely a general playback problem when using remote playback commands while something other is still playing. We had this problem already with the Apple TV clients i think.

Just note that I am the only one playing content so it never more than 1 stream at a time in my situation.

its not odd that as soon as the Android app has the proper season and episode info to display, video starts playing properly?

No. Because you get the correct info after a force close of the app which also resets the playback engine or the websocket connection. One of those two things is the culprit i think.

@hstamasSorry, but i cannot reproduce your issue with the Android app 3.5.12. Neither with my 4.8.0.13 production server, nor with 4.9.2.3 beta.
Can you please also create an app log and a new server log, but with plugin logging enabled and server logging set to debug?!
Also if you experience the black screen issue, please try to use the "Play on another device" feature right from a browser on your server to send some video to your Android app.

I can see where to turn on debug logging within the plugin and on the server in general but I dont see anything specifically called ?plugin logging"?

debug logging within the plugin = plugin logging

Well, I broke the first rule in computer troubleshooting. Change only one thing at a time!

Only thing I’d did last night was upgrade to the latest Mac beta server but today, with debugging on to test, playback worked as expected.

i will continue to monitor as I thing this might just be a coincidence?
