No sound on some devices for mkv with mono ac3 audio

Oppo BDP-93 DLNA and Chrome browser play movie properly.  Emby app on Roku Ultra, Emby app on Fire TV 4K, and DLNA from WDTV Live produce no sound.  File is MKV with only one audio track.  Emby server is version 4.9.1.0 beta on FreeBSD 13.5 (jail in TrueNAS Core latest version).  Documentation for all devices indicates they should play any ac3 stream, including single channel.

I used to play all mkv via Oppo, but some time ago Emby stopped accepting chapter forward and back commands from the now 20 year old device.

Hi, given that mono ac3 is very uncommon, is it possible that the WDTV just can't handle it?

Documentation and searching indicates WDTV should handle single channel ac3.  Please recall I have the same problem (no sound) with both Roku Ultra and FireTV Stick 4K using their respective Emby Apps. Lot's of older movies come through mono.

If my Oppo could do chapter forward / reverse as it used to do with older versions of Emby DLNA, I wouldn't care about any of the other devices.

If the original file is being served then the problem is nothing to do with the server. It means three different explanations.

I will say that we have seen issues with mono ac3 before, across a range of devices. It is one of those things that even though it be on the list of supported formats by the device, we often find that it doesn't play very well due to the video player on the device having some kind of issue with it.

I suspect it will be the same situation for all three, however out of the three, android is where we have the most ability to correct the problem, as we have direct access to the video player source code. For WD and Roku however, we can only report the issue to the manufacturer, and then have the server transcode the content in the meantime until they resolve it.

To continue looking at this further, please attach log file examples from the other two. Thanks.

Here are log files from Emby when Roku Ultra played a mono cartoon.  No sound was produced.

If I play the same cartoon on my laptop via the web interface to Emby sound is produced.

FireTV Stick is not currently attached, and not worth pursuing.

Why is it not worth pursuing?

I prefer Toslink to HDMI since I have older Sonos equipment.  My Oppo, Roku, and WDTV all have optical outputs.  The FireTV Stick does not.

If we can resolve the Roku I'll be quite happy.  Prefer Roku as the WDTV and Oppo have other Emby issues

OK so my assessment on Roku is the same as WDTV.  We could add an option into the Roku app to force a transcode of mono ac3.

However the most practical advice I can offer is to convert the file (including the audio). Then you will never have to deal with it again.

I already converted most of my mono ac3 mkv files to two channel mp3 mkv.  Just left a few cartoons so I could generate logs for you.  I'll convert those now.  Thanks.

After I installed 4.9.1.0 beta the WDTV can no longer open my TV Shows library.  All other devices and browser can open that library.  Would you be interested in a log for that issue?
