Mindows 0 Posted May 20 Posted May 20 Hi!, My 2021 Samsung TV, 75QN95A, can't display the AV1 codec. I've seen that other older TVs can. Why is that? It's supposed to display them. I've updated the app to 1.2.0 and the server to the latest beta version, but nothing.
Happy2Play 9435 Posted May 20 Posted May 20 May depend on all codecs within the container. Please provide server and ffmpeg log if present.
Luke 40018 Posted May 20 Posted May 20 Hi there, let's look at an example. Please attach the information requested in how to report a media playback issue. Thanks!

I'm not sure which other older models you are referring to, but it is up to Samsung which codecs they support. However, I expect your model does support AV1. Why do you think that it does not? What happens when try and play? On 21/05/2025 at 02:40, Luke said: Hi there, let's look at an example. Please attach the information requested in how to report a media playback issue. Thanks! It doesn't play Av1 content, the media player error message appears, not compatible, I have seen other threads where they play with a Samsung TV from 2020 and lower range. With Xbox Series X I play without problems.
FrostByte 5252 Posted June 5 Posted June 5 Try updating the client. An option was added in v1.9.8 to make AV1 play on some models. Current version is 2.1.1
FrostByte 5252 Posted June 5 Posted June 5 BTW just looking at the video specifications of all Samsung TVs and it looks like they began adding AV1 back in 2020 for all models.
Mindows 0 Posted June 5 Author Posted June 5 My tv is 2021 top!! I use 2.1.1 last version and server the last beta.

Yes, saw what model/year you had earlier and was just commenting so everyone reading knew when AV1 support was added. Great, your other messages all said you were running 1.2.0. As a test since you have the latest now does it help if you turn on AV1 transcoding in Playback settings? Though I'm surprised that would be needed- like mentioned your TV should support AV1 without transcoding. Also, make sure you have video transcoding enabled on the server.
SamES 1003 Posted June 5 Posted June 5 Server log and any ffmpeg logs will help as we may understand better what's causing this to fail.
Mindows 0 Posted June 9 Author Posted June 9 Hello, my TV checking its specifications decodes Av1 codec by itself, through emby direct playback there is no way, something must be wrong with the app, since if I ask for direct playback and it does not offer it the fault is not my configuration, due to hardware in the server I cannot do transcoding nor do I want to, I only want direct playback, I introduce the same files on a USB memory and connecting it to the TV, said file plays it without any problem, through Emby nothing at all, I get the media player error window. I need my TV to play this type of files because my nvidia shield is not compatible.
SamES 1003 Posted June 9 Posted June 9 Can you please post server and ffmpeg logs for this playback attempt?

Mindows 0 Posted June 10 Author Posted June 10 new log, connect tv time 18:55.31 @SamES embyserver.txt
Mindows 0 Posted June 11 Author Posted June 11 I just installed Jellyfin on my Samsung TV manually and AV1 works perfectly. I was also surprised to find that the subtitles also work, which Emby doesn't either.

Mindows 0 Posted June 11 Author Posted June 11 I have all of that disabled on all users. My friend with a Samsung 75S95C TV plays the content without any problems and I also have those options disabled.
Mindows 0 Posted June 11 Author Posted June 11 The rest of my colleagues use Xiaomi tv box s gen 2 and they play without problems too.

My friend with a Samsung 75S95C TV plays the content without any problems and I also have those options disabled. The issue is that those options can be required depending on the audio track and subtitles that are selected for playback. Please test and let us know the results. Adding the ffmpeg files will help us to better understand the media info and playback selections. BTW, why did you decide to turn these off - many things will work with them off, but also many will not and then you will have these problems. Emby is designed to always play the 'best' option but will use alternate methods when that is not possible. By disabling these options, you are preventing it from taking alternate actions when it 'needs' to. What issue do you think you are resolving by turning all of these off? If you have issues with them on, then that's something different we should investigate.
Mindows 0 Posted June 12 Author Posted June 12 I have activated everything you asked me and the image appears .... but everything is transcoded both image and audio which is EAC3 compatible with the television and even so it starts to transcode it, and the Av1 video is passed to hls h264, you cannot advance fluid minutes the image pauses buffering and until the image starts again, which seems like garbage to me ... because the devices are compatible they should not perform any use of transcoding or conversion. I deactivate everything again because in all these months I have not needed to have this activated at all and on my partner's Samsung TV AV1 works without activating this, apart from my reason for deactivating it was because of Direct TV that always transcoded me on any device and by deactivating it it transmitted directly
