I find that if I play a movie with DTS audio in the android app, it doesn't actually play at all. Only way I have found to play such a movie is to force a transcode on the video which then forces the audio to transcode into a playable format. As you say, the ATV app does this automatically and transcodes just the audio..

I'm pretty sure the Android app now has an option to automatically convert unsupported audio just like the ATV app.

Which version are you using?

Well I'm glad it's not just me who has this issue lstryhrn. I have many H264 movies with DTS audio and they all fail to play at all in the Android app. But Android TV  play them all by transcoding the audio. @tollgate

Make sure you have at least version 3.4.43 and have enabled the option to transcode unsupported audio.

I'm actually running 3.4.52. There is an option to transcode unsupported surround sound to Dolby but it makes no difference.

Hi there, let's look at an example. Please attach the information requested in how to report a media playback issue. Thanks!

Log attached. No ffmpeg log as file failed to play. This was using the android standard app. The Android TV app works as expected.

You could enable the logging in the app and supply that as well.

In that app in the playback settings, do you have an option for whether or not to pass thru DTS?  If so, is it unchecked?

Okay, so that confirms that this is one of those situations where the device reports it supports DTS but it really doesn't work very well.

OK. So best to stick with ATV which works flawlessly? I've only been trying standard Android standard because I understand ATV will ultimately be discontinued.

As a test, I just tried the standard Android app on my Shield. Installed from Play Store - version 3.4.36. It plays the DTS files OK.

Yes, the Shield should handle DTS just fine as long as the outboard equipment supports it.
