I know the difference between full-screen and maximized very well.

The three options I described are switching the Emby Windows app into full-screen mode - not maximized.

Pressing this little button:

..also gets you into full-screen mode, which means that you don't see a title bar and you don't see the task bar.

And going to Full Screen by "just clicking here" is not an option for HTPC usage - which is how I and many others even in this thread - use it. There is no mouse and keyboard hooked up to "just click here".

It does that. When you close it while full-screen it will open again in full-screen mode.

I wasn't seeing it do that last night but I'll play with it tonight and see what happens.

It does the same like ET Desktop. When you run ET desktop the first time it runs in windowed mode as qwell. Make it fs and close it while fs it will stay fs. And the Windows app behaves exactly the same.

Make sure you close while in fullscreen mode.  Since the "X" close icon is gone you may need to use the back button at the home screen to exit ET in this mode.

@Theodore

Once you have confirmed, please acknowledge how many times I have patiently repeated the same thing, even though you were accusing me of not reading and understanding.

Thanks

+1!

Again and again it has to be repeated that for HTPC users controlling Emby with a handheld HID keyboard emulator there is no mouse option.

Anyone who thinks that users will, or should, be turning away from HTPC use in this way to running it on a PC with standard keyboard and mouse control are IMO not rational or respectful of what such users are looking for from this application.

If you have no mouse connected then use this method (TV mode).
Select a movie.  Press the play button. When the movie is playing, there will be a "Fullscreen" icon in the lower right.  Highlight and select it and the movie will go into "Fullscreen" mode.  This will say persistent after you stop the movie and ET will be in "Fullscreen mode"

Guys, can please get your hands on the app and follow the instructions given here instead of fantasizing about things that wouldn't work even though the do work exactly as explained.

Thanks.

I can see the confusion here.  I too only have a Sofabaton remote controlling my HTPC using the Blue-tooth keyboard option and there is no mouse option, so clicking is not an option.  The method I posted does work and verified in TV mode.  There is no "Fullscreen" icon in TV mode on the ET pages, only in the player.

Thanks for that clarification.

That may be half of the confusion, the other half being the assumption that it would need to be done each time on startup. It needs to be done only once and from then on it will always launch  full-screen, so all the methods I mentioned for going full-screen are needed to be done just a single time. And that's no different to ET Desktop.

I will gladly get my hands on the app when it has an option to use an external player for both videos and live TV. I know there are plans for this but until it arrives I have no alternative but to use what I have now and what I know is working in that way.

That's totally fine. For external player support, we had underestimated the demand and that's why it had been postponed to a 2nd wave.

For the full-screen subject,  I just want to end that phantom discussion about a shortcoming of the Windows app that it doesn't actually have.

Thanks

I still can't get the Windows app to work.  It hangs straight after the animation.  Could somebody advise how to fix please?

Thanks

Which "Windows App"? The one from the store? Which version do you have?

I'd totally switch over to the Windows Store version if it wasn't for the fact that it has a Title bar.

Is it possible to add an option to make it look like the Emby Theater App? I usually watch everything in 1920x1080 window on my 4k display. So I can do other stuff while it's on screen. It's not really a big issue since I can use the Theater app, but it seems like it may be sun-setted at some point?

This is exactly what I have been trying to get through to them. This is the difference between Full Screen (no title bar, like hitting F11) and Maximized (hitting the square in the corner).

Just for the record: There's no agreement at all between the two of you:

  • @Volodesi - wants the app to be shown in windowed mode without title bar ("in 1920x1080 window on my 4k display")
=> which the Windows app cannot do

  • @Theodore - wants the app to be shown in full-screen (not maximized) mode
=> which the Windows app can do very well

Theater does this.

And the app version?  But really should be unrelated to Desktop version issue.

You are getting stuck on this and I don't know why, so let me be as clear as possible (because I am reading your responses in full) -- Full Screen is NOT the same as Maximized. Maximized is when you make a program display take up the entire monitor like by hitting the square in the upper right corner next to the X to close the app. Full Screen, aka Kiosk, is when it does this AND does not display a title bar AND overlaps the taskbar without hiding it separately, which is what Theater does right now when you fill the screen. Attached are screenshots of the title bar for both, see the difference? In the MS Store app "Emby" is in the title bar the entire time even during playback which ruins the experience as it keeps drawing eyes back to it - and this doesn't even touch covering the task bar for an immersive experience. So no, the app and Theater are NOT the same.

Theater.png

This is easy to fix

Go into display, change to TV mode and voila, kiosk mode, no more minimise maximise buttons

It's that simple.

Well as I said when I responded last night, when I was testing with the Store app the night before it was NOT re-opening in full screen on next launch. Testing last night and this morning on startup has it working though so fingers crossed that the issue is passed.

That said there is one more annoyance but it is in the web console. When connecting with Theater when the app closed it would disappear from the "Play On" menu but when connecting with the App is stays there for quite a while (not sure what the timeout is, but it seems to be a couple hours and not a couple seconds). See screenshot for what I mean.

They really are the same except that the store version doesn't have external players yet, and the desktop app doesn't have the download feature.

If anyone has the impression that the user interface is different, they are not different. Most likely the difference is caused by comparing one in TV display mode to the other not being in TV display mode.

apologies, didnt realize I was in TV mode

Has anyone gotten the theater mode to work? Just tried installing on 2 different machines and hangs on both. Incredibly frustrating.

I am canceling my sub .. i 1000% hate the 'store app' it does not navigate with my remote and the desktop version seems to no longer work after some kind of update.  Kodi is a PITA but it still works fine with my media remote unlike this new store-app-emby and i 10000% hate the new UI for the store app.

I have spent at least 6 hours trying to fix this ... im done.
