Static IP VPN not working with Live TV

Recommended Posts

Hi there. New to forums, used Emby for years. Usually come to the forums for answers.

I have everything set up with Emby Premiere and my IPTV can play remotely. However, when I choose a static IP from my VPN provider (Surfshark), it errors out on Emby. My remote IP does not change when using the static IP VPN from what it was without. I can use the static IP VPN on stand alone IPTV players in my house and outside with no problems. Is there some reason the Static IP VPN does not work with Emby Live TV?

I want to make sure we understand correctly.
How do you access your Emby server remotely?
Are you using a Domain or DDNS entry plus port number, an IP address + port number entry or Emby Connect.

Are you trying to use the VPN to have your remote clients going through it making use of the static IP it has?
Is the purpose of the VPN to hide/obfuscate the source of your IPTV so your ISP doesn't see it, but otherwise isn't used for anything Emby?

When you say it "errors out" what exactly do you mean?  What/where does this error out, server or client?

Thanks,
Carlo

Hi there. I am using two different methods, one is via remote (WAN) access HTTP:1.1.1.1 (4 numbers):8096 on a computer hooked up to a 55inch tv. and the other way is emby connect via firestick. Both are at the same remote location, 1200 miles away.

I am trying to use the VPN to have the remote clients go through a static IP address VPN from surfshark. I am doing this as the VPN service helps out with my IPTV provider to be more stable during peak use. So I am only using the IP address to assist with the IPTV. Standalone on a firestick with a IPTV player the static VPN IP address works with my IPTV. When I turn it on and turn off bypassing it to Emby the remote WAN access changes to the surfhark VPN and then emby stops working. You can't call up the static VPN IP address :8096 as it is unreachable. So that is where I stand, works great for Video, okay for IPTV except at prime time all on regular internet.

When you turn the VPN on/off your changing the network stack and the default gateway. This will change your WAN address as far as programs behind the VPN are concerned.
What you want to do is change the settings on Surfshark so it uses split tunneling.  This will allow you to setup the "split" for either a particular set of programs or based on destination.

You want to set this up so only traffic going to the IPTV provider use the VPN while all other traffic does NOT use the VPN.

I have split tunnelling set up and it allows videos to play remotely without changing the LAN remote access assigned by Emby. When you try to watch IPTV you get:

Playback error: Exception of type 'MediaBrower.Common.Extensions.RemotesServerUnavailableException' was thrown.

Only way to stop this is to turn the VPN off. and TV resumes.Unlike on a firestick when you turn VPN on it takes a program like IPTV Smarters and allows better IPTV access. This is what I am trying to do for Emby.

I could never get the Surfshark Bypasser to work without breaking IPTV.   I found NordVPN worked much better and has a remote connection feature Surfshark did not have.

Do you shut down Emby when turning on/off the VPN?

Try something for me.  Turn off the VPN.
open a command prompt and run this
route print > vpnoff.txt
Start VPN

run this from a command prompt:
route print > vpnon.txt

attach both of those files to a replay message.

Tell us the ip address of your providers’ streams:
To get this IP look at an entry in the m3u files. You want the full domain name.
If you had this http://pvserver.link:8080/play/dbw7-_FmFepOyXWLDCRcZGvBnbXKlCGbdvRW8BUEJEkq8PW3aFk3y
the part we want is pvserver.link
run this with your domain to get the ip
ping -4 str.pvserver.link
