Restrict Albums in Album Artist view

I would like a feature where I could restrict the Albums displayed in the Album Artist view to only those that exist in the folder that the Library is built from.

I have many, many Various Artist albums, and I don't want to see these displayed in the available albums under the Album Artist view.

Hoping this might be possible.

Personally don't see it as folder is not used at all and is displaying everything via their embedded tags.

Now you have Folder view that shows you your content per your folder structure.

Hi, yes this is something we can look at improving in future updates. Thanks.

Yes, I think your request could solve your problem, but also, depending upon how you configure your music now, there may be some things you could do to alter the current view you are seeing???

  • What is your libraries set up and folder structure now?
  • Do you have a separate "Various Artists" library from your "Main" music library?
  • Do you use "Various Artists" for your Album Artist tags or show all the Artists individually in this field?
  • Which vertical section on the Album Artist pages are the Various Artists albums appearing in - Albums or Appears On?
  • Can you provide screenshot examples?

If the OP has separate music libraries and Album Artists tagged as "Various Artists" then I think the result (from my limited testing) will be that the Appears On sections will have the "many, many Various Artists albums" mixed in with the main library albums? If this is the case, then being able to expand the Appears On section into a grid view and apply Tag Filtering would be useful. This would also be useful for large libraries (like mine) where horizontal scrolling the large Appears On row is sometimes very unwieldy.

If the OP Various Artists are appearing in the Albums sections, then they could be added to a Collection and collapsed into one single folder that would be shown in the expanded Album grid view (perhaps an unlikely scenario, but still a possible option). If this is the situation, then retagging to "Various Artists" could also be a better potential solution?

The Appears On section could be hidden completely with custom CSS. (This won't solve the underlying issue though, and won't work for client apps.)

That's all I could think of for the moment. Perhaps it offers some help??? Cheers!

Thanks all for the responses.

I have the following folder structure:

Albums A (artists beginning with the letter A)

Albums B (artists beginning with the letter B)

etc.

Albums Various Artists (various artist albums)

Singles 60's (singles from the 60's - multiple artists)

Singles 70's (singles from the 70's - multiple artists)

etc.

When I create a library I specify which folder the library chooses content from, but the Songs and the Albums display everything from the file system. This doesn't seem logical to me. Hence the reason for the request.

Based on your library set up and folder structure, yes the request makes sense (I think I've seen similar requests previously for Movies).

Something you could perhaps look at setting up is Collections? (This doesn't solve the request, but could give you some useful alternative separate page views, rather than always seeing 'everything' always mixed together.)

For each of you preferred separate folders set up a separate Collection. You could (e.g.) add all your Various Artists Albums to a Various Artists Collection and (e.g.) all your Singles 60s to its own separate Collection.

You can add different item types to a Collection (e,g, Artists, Albums) and the Group By function will allow you to see these on different vertical rows, or combine them all together.

If this sound useful, you could try it out with one folder first to see if it helps you or not?

Thanks for the suggestion.

It works, but you then lose the richness of content that the Album Artist view provides you with - artist image, bio etc.

Plus, my music library is over 300,000 songs with 10's of thousands of artists which is a hell of a lot of collections to create!
