Live TV Playback fails/freezes

I'm new to Emby, and coming from a previous Plex setup. On average, my Android TV apps have issues with Live TV steams and freeze during playback 2-3 times a day. I've sent debug logs from the playback screen in the app just a few moments ago, and downloaded the server logs if those will be insightful as well.

The server logs appear normal from everything I see around the timestamp noted below, but will provide if useful. However, I hadn't turned on debug level logs until after this latest occurrence.

Details from most recent occurrence provided in the app logs:

  • 17:55:03 (EST), 07/18/2024
  • Channel 12.1 OTA via HDHomerun Connect Quatro (Model: HDHR5-4US, Firmware: 20231214)
  • Sent logs within 2-3 minutes of the issue
  • Emby Server version 4.8.8.0
  • Emby Android TV version 2.1.14g
  • Screenshot of stats for nerds
  • local user rkroeger

While it didn't happen in this instance, in some cases, after the initial freeze, the screen may update to a new/different frame after a few minutes of being frozen on screen, but never actually resume playback.

In general, really loving everything Emby has to offer and looking forward to making this our primary media center.

Hi.  Can you try searching for our standard android app (Just "Emby" on Amazon and "Emby for Android on Google) on the same device's app store and see how that compares?

Thanks.

Hi.  Yes, please do try the other app.  I think it may get around the issue by not remuxing as this looks like a problem with the stream being fed to the player:

If you allow direct streaming Live TV in the TV app, it may also play fine (that would be another good test).

Thank you both for the suggestions. Apologies, I was away for a few days before I got a chance to do any testing. While the other "Android" app does seem to resolve the Live TV failing, it doesn't seem to allow anything other than Direct Play. Maybe I'm misunderstanding, but when direct playing a live stream, I don't seem to be able to control the Live TV stream, pause, rewind, etc. I had previously turned on Direct Stream in the "Android for TV" app, but that hadn't resolved the problem previously - and what was displaying the Remux status after enabling.

What other suggestions or options may work for my purposes?

Hi, yes we are working on improving that. Thanks.

How would I go about testing this setting? I don't see an option for direct stream in the TV app. Was this a reference for Direct Play? I don't want to lose access to playback features (pause, rewind, ff) in the Live TV streams.

Hi.  Yes, I meant the option "Direct Play Live TV" in the Live TV settings in the app.  You will lose seek ability but it would still be good as a test to try this - to see if the issue is actually with the raw stream or with our repackaging of it.

Thanks.
