now that you have them moved, in terminal do the following:

sudo -i

Then make sure your Ubuntu user is in the emby group... so if your username is nick then

usermod -a -G emby nick

next make sure emby owns the movie folders:

chown -R emby:emby /home/jump/Documents/west/movies

Also you can change the security to 777 to allow any read/write

after you do the usermod, do

sudo chmod -R 777 /home/jump/Documents/tv

Buenas noches.

I'm having trouble updating from 3.5.2.0 to 4.1.1.0.  I've downloaded the .deb file 4 times, directly and it appears to work, but when I attempt to install it, I get an error saying its not a valid debian file.

OS: Ubuntu Server 19.04 (Console only)

I'm generally new to using Linux based servers, so be patient with me if I'm missing something simple.

Here is the text from the console[iP sterilized]:

Are you renaming the file after you download it? So far you're on the fourth version/attempt, .4 at the end of the file name. Delete the others and rename the fourth to remove the suffix.

I have a success story to share.

I am currently using Ubuntu 19.04 server with latest drivers and updated installer during setup. After installing emby 4.1.1.0 server using dpkg -i, it recognised my intel uhd 630 immediately. After searching online, I manually installed .deb files for nvidia graphics cards for encode & decode using wget and dpkg -i from ppa on website. Not all packages where installed, since there were errors. After running apt update ubuntu itself stated that packages where missing from nvidia drivers, so I ran apt upgrade.

Then I rebooted my linux machine, and all devices could be detected. I use a pcie ssd as main drive.

Now I am finally able to transcode 4k hevc in realtime, after 2 years of problems with plex, and 1 year with emby. It seems to be related to the Gui of the operating system as of why 4k transcoding does not work realtime in the past.

I think this because from the moment the os boots, the screen output becomes disabled. Not sure why...

Any one any ideas as of why 4k transcoding works with ubuntu server 19.04 when the screen output is disabled?

No, I was not. And I think I understand now.  So even though I was downloading another copy (likely the first was corrupted), when I ran the install, it was still attempting it with the first downloaded version.  I will do the delete and rename and reply with the result.

EDIT:  Thank you for the guidance.  The first file was in fact a partial download.  I deleted them all and did a fresh download and install.  Worked like a charm.  Thank you Q-Droid.

Installed Ubuntu 18 and latest Emby server.  Install went fine, but I'm having difficulty setting up the library.  I have all media on a Seagate USB drive.  When browsing for Movie library location, it can't see the mount point of the drive.  I verified the directory is there and Ubuntu can browse the drive.  I thought the name might be an issue since it has spaces, but changing the label to "Seagate" didn't help. It appears Ubuntu is using udisksctrl to do the mount since it starts in "/media".  (Been a while since I did much with Linux... and it was called "UNIX" and didn't have a GUI. :)

Blasphemy!  UNIX is and will always be UNIX. Linux is for the kids... ;)

Access to media libraries on external and secondary storage almost always comes down to permissions. You'll have to check ownership and permissions along the path to make sure the runtime user (and/or group) for the emby server has the access it needs to traverse the path to the library. I don't know much about udisksctl and whether it allows options to give emby the access it needs upon mounting.

OH!!

Before using disk utility make a mount point for the drive like /media/samsung or wherever you want the disk to be mounted

sudo mkdir /media/samsung

Cheers

I guess I'm young at heart then!

Permissions are 777 on the directory.  I tried changing the owner from me to "emby" and chown silently fails to change anything.  I'm going to see if IWM's write-up will help.

Permissions are important but the disk utility solved the mount problem

See answer at end of this

It worked for me

Thanks for the response, but getting it mounted isn't my issue.  It's there and I can see files.  It's just that the emby server can't see them for some reason.

Again, you have to make sure the user running the emby server can traverse the entire path, not just the directory containing the media files. If the user is emby then it has to be able to access all of the sub-directories in the path starting from /media. Not write privs but r and x for the directories and r for the files. There are many ways you could do this. One is to add emby to the group that has access if it's the same for all of the content on the external drive or another is to run chmod -R o+rX /media (that's an upper case x) to give file and directory read access to everyone.
