RanmaCanada 422 Posted May 13, 2024 Posted May 13, 2024 If you want to use Emby on an Apple TV, you NEED to buy Infuse, period. The dev team have been fighting with the Apple TV since its inception, and they have been losing the battle. Either use Infuse, or dump the device altogether as Apple TV is a horrible device if you intend to do anything outside of their ecosystem.
blipoids 0 Posted May 13, 2024 Author Posted May 13, 2024 Well, I'm just asking because ATV now supports decoding of some DV streams natively. That's how Infuse got their player to support a broader range of DV files.
RanmaCanada 422 Posted May 31, 2024 Posted May 31, 2024 @blipoidsEh just because he's on the board of directors of the TNL Church doesn't mean he's looney. Unless you have some other information to share? Apple devices are great if you want to stick in their playground, period. If you want to actually do anything else, they are pretty much impossible to work with. Android is open source, and doesn't have such a tight grip on your ability to do things. The bottom line is Apple sucks and has been nothing but problems. As I've mentioned in other threads, the Apple TV is so difficult to work with that Jellyfin abandoned their Apple TV app. Their last git release was in 2022, app store release was in March 9 2023 (just a minor update). If the "FU give my free S*&(*^G" group has given up, that should show you just how difficult it is to work with. And this is the group that forked Emby all because of a nag screen that they felt should not have been in what was at the time a OSS project.
christophe.ferrandon 1 Posted August 18, 2024 Posted August 18, 2024 Hello, Having the same problem as others, which is the impossibility to play Dolby Vision 4K mkv from the Emby app on Apple TV while the “IINA” player under macOS does it without any problem, also Emby from the Web, I ask the question: what is the reason why the dev team of “Infuse” under tvOS can do what Emby team can't? It seems that the “TV Services” framework is well documented at https://developer.apple.com. If a dev could enlighten us? I love both Emby for all its qualities AND the AppleTV, which is hyper-quality in every respect, despite, I admit, a development effort to get into Xcode/Swift. I'd be happy to pay for an Emby license to make it universal rather than take out an “Infuse” license, as the latter is so much less accomplished. Thanks for your efforts and explanations.
visproduction 208 Posted August 18, 2024 Posted August 18, 2024 Apparently, Infuse licenses Dolby and DTS libraries. I was trying to lookup a price for that. I would guess it is not cheap. Related: https://www.reddit.com/r/PleX/comments/17dgi1e/any_reason_why_i_need_infuse_for_apple_tv_4k_and/
Luke 38863 Posted August 19, 2024 Posted August 19, 2024 Hi, yes we are working on improving this. Thanks.

Do you mean that Dolby vision will actually be possible in future on the emby Apple TV app? At the moment it's the one thing that stops me using the emby app. I can't get Dolby vision to play on the emby Android Kodi add-on or the Android TV emby app either (I gave up trying to work out why)

Which latest version did you mean?
Moreje 14 Posted August 28, 2024 Posted August 28, 2024 I'm interested in this too.. I'm running emby beta on webos, and DV doesn't p'ay... My TV shows HDR logo only... Is there something we can do?

Moreje 14 Posted August 28, 2024 Posted August 28, 2024 Maybe @Lukeis still in summer holidays let's wait a little bit..

I enabled an ffmpeg add on and installed the emby Kodi plug in on the server. One of them or both of them fix the issue. Still won't work on the Emby TV app though.
musictalks 2 Posted September 1, 2024 Posted September 1, 2024 I use emby app for AppleTV 4K via emby server (4.8.8.0) connected with a hdmi v2.0 cable to LG OLED C9 TV. I changed the video settings to Dolby and Dolby vision is working great! I think that some peoples issues maybe stemmed from the TV they're using. It may not be Dolby compatible. Not all 4K TV's are.
gmjh123 3 Posted September 1, 2024 Posted September 1, 2024 If you mean that you changed the setting on the Apple TV 4K to Dolby vision, all that means is that it outputs everything as Dolby vision no matter what type of file it plays. The emby Apple TV 4K app does not do Dolby vision. The setting on Apple TV 4k should be at 'match content type ' for it to play Dolby Vision when it gets genuine Dolby vision. If you change it to match content then the emby app will not play Dolby vision

I play DV files consistently on many Android devices with the stock Emby android app, the Emby android TV app and Kodi with the next gen kodi plugin. All work great for DV and HDR content.
musictalks 2 Posted September 1, 2024 Posted September 1, 2024 Here is a quote from apple 4K Dolby Vision: Used for 4K TVs that support Dolby Vision HDR to display video dynamically, on a scene-by-scene basis and with an even more accurate range of colour, contrast and luminance than standard HDR. https://support.apple.com/en-au/102339#:~:text=Apple TV 4K supports the,and luminance than standard HDR.

That goes into detail as to what they are. However, @gmjh123is 100% correct. That's not DV from the file, that's the ATV adding DV to everything. The correct setup for Apple TVs is to match content and framerate and set the display to 4k SDR. This will have it engage HDR formats such as HDR10+ and Dolby Vision when the source file has the metadata in it. Otherwise, even regular movies or tv shows that have no HDR will be played with a fake HDR that really looks horrible. Edited September 1, 2024 by sross44

Yes since I made that post I've realized that Dolby Vision does play on the Android TV app and on Emby NextGen for Kodi. It's a real pity that it doesn't work for the Apple TV 4K emby app. I can use Emby via the infuse app on Apple TV 4K and get Dolby vision. But that tends to be a bit flaky, I keep getting random black screen for a couple of seconds using infuse.

I’ve had nothing but a great experience with Infuse so just curious as to what’s going on. How do you have the Emby share setup in infuse? Directly connected to the server or via Emby connect? Lots of things could be triggering that.
gmjh123 3 Posted September 1, 2024 Posted September 1, 2024 Yes I have infuse Pro. Emby is set up on infuse directly connected to the server. Emby connect never seems to work for me. I suspect the problem may have been that I had the emby server on my Android phone.(Which is prone to all sorts of sleeping and battery issues even when you tell an app not to sleep) I reported the intermittent black screen for a couple of seconds on an infuse forum and they recommended that I stopped using UPnP and change to something like Emby. But it made no difference. I've changed the emby server today to be on my (reasonably powerful) onn 4K Pro Android device where the emby server won't sleep as sleep is not an option on devices plugged directly into the mains. So I've yet to see if it helps with this issue. If that makes no difference, then it must just be my internet connection (which is usually a solid 500 MB) suddenly dropping for a couple of seconds for no reason, in which case there's nothing I can do about it other than giving up all attempts at a server, and playing files directly from a USB.
