samhill5215 0 Posted August 26, 2023 Posted August 26, 2023 My Win10 Pro desktop recently crashed. Once restored I tried signing into my emby server at with my customary credentials but failed. I tried both [server ip:8096] and [server name:8096] Emby replied with: Sign In Error Invalid username or password. Please try again. I clicked on the "Forgot password" link but after entering my username the response was: Forgot Password Please try again within your home network to initiate the password reset process. I don't know what that means. My emby server is on my home network and the url I use to sign in is of my home network. I normally use firefox but chrome behaves identically. My android phone app plays the music on my home network and gives me access to the server. I'd like to understand what happened before doing something drastic. Should I try resetting the password in the android app?
Luke 40111 Posted August 26, 2023 Posted August 26, 2023 HI, can you try doing the forgot password process directly from the server machine?
samhill5215 0 Posted August 27, 2023 Author Posted August 27, 2023 I thought of that but my server is text based, no graphics, hence no browser. The thing is that I don't think it's really a password issue since emby runs fine on my phone whether it's logged in locally or remotely. The local connection must use the password I have on record but I can't see it. I suspect I can't run emby on my desktop because of a licensing issue. Is it looking for my premiere key perhaps? I'm just guessing but that seems logical. I don't know how to address any of these issues. Before I try resetting the password is there some way to recover it? Where does emby keep it? In any case how would I reset the password on a text-based server, either from a terminal or SSH?
Luke 40111 Posted August 28, 2023 Posted August 28, 2023 Quote emby runs fine on my phone whether it's logged in locally or remotely Hi, if this is the case and you already have a device that can login, is it logged in as an admin so that you can get to server settings from there? If yes then you can use that to get to user management and assign new passwords as needed.
samhill5215 0 Posted August 28, 2023 Author Posted August 28, 2023 Except I have to provide my current password. Now what?

samhill5215 0 Posted September 1, 2023 Author Posted September 1, 2023 There's no reset password button. From my avatar on the upper right I click on App settings, then Password and I'm presented with three inputs: Current password, New password and New password confirm and a Save button. No reset. I went ahead and tried the password I had on file but got an invalid username or password message. Super helpful. How can it run fine on my phone but not my desktop? Here's a thought: how about uninstalling the server altogether and starting over? I have my premiere key filed although I'm starting to suspect its validity. My only concern is that uninstalling doesn't necessarily remove all traces and emby might recognize my account when I re-install which puts me right back here.
Luke 40111 Posted September 3, 2023 Posted September 3, 2023 OK please try going through the password reset process, and then signing in again. Then please attach the Emby server log: How to Report a Problem Thanks.
samhill5215 0 Posted September 7, 2023 Author Posted September 7, 2023 I finally got in, by brute method: tried every username/password combination in my database. So that's done. I would suggest however a method to recover or reset the credentials on the command line. I'm really surprised that doesn't exist. Please implement. It would have made my life so mush easier. Thanks for the suggestions. I am curious though; where's this password reset button?

Sorry, I had forgotten that it doesn't show for admin users because you can't leave them with a blank password. So in 4.7 you need to know the current password in order to change it. In 4.8, that has been removed and you can just change it provided you are signed into the server dashboard. Quote I would suggest however a method to recover or reset the credentials on the command line. I'm really surprised that doesn't exist. Please implement. It would have made my life so mush easier. The password reset process works just fine and if you can't remember the admin user name, you can just leave it blank and it will reset the password for every single user in the database. The problem is that it's common to confuse the difference between Emby Connect and the locally managed users on your server machine, so many people will reset the password but then try to sign in with their Emby Connect credentials, and so then they'll come back and tell us that the reset process isn't working. Is that what happened, that the password was reset to blank but you had the wrong user name? The other thing that could have happened is you could have entered the wrong user name into the password reset process (e.g. your Emby Connect name). In 4.7 if you do this, nothing gets reset but it doesn't really tell you this. This has been improved in 4.8 so that if you enter a non-existent username, it will tell you, and then you choose to try again with a different user name or just leave it blank to reset it for everyone.
