I have been very impressed with the M1/m2 mini performance even without HW transcoding. I am curious as well. I have a M2 Mac Mini which has been more stable than a Intel NUC running Ubuntu. The NUC ran fine for several months but then for reasons I couldn't figure out it started to hang. I believe the issue was heat related but even with an external fan moving air it was still lock up.
