Hi, do you know Emby?

Yes, I'm familiar with Emby. Emby is a media server software that allows you to access your media library (such as photos, videos, and music) from multiple devices. It allows you to organize and stream your personal media, and it can be used to access your media library from devices such as smartphones, tablets, and smart TVs.

Emby can be installed on a variety of devices including Windows, Linux and Mac computers, and some NAS (Network-attached storage) devices. It can also be installed on a Raspberry Pi.

Additionally, Emby has a web interface that allows you to access your media library from a web browser, and it also has apps for popular platforms such as Android, iOS, and Windows.

What are the main developers of Emby?

Emby is developed by Emby Media LLC, a company based in the United States. The company was founded by Luke and the development of the software is led by a team of developers. The exact names of the developers are not widely known, but the team is composed of a group of volunteers, and the development of Emby is supported by contributions from the community.

What makes Emby special and what are the major advantages it provides over the competition?

Which kinds of video hardware acceleration does Emby support?

Emby supports several types of video hardware acceleration to improve the performance of video playback on devices that support hardware acceleration. The specific types of hardware acceleration supported by Emby depend on the platform and device on which it is running. Here are a few examples:

  1. Hardware decoding: Emby supports hardware decoding of video on devices that support it. Hardware decoding offloads the decoding of video from the CPU to the GPU, which can significantly improve the performance of video playback.

  2. Direct Play: Emby supports Direct Play, which allows the client to play the video file natively without the need for transcoding. This can significantly reduce the CPU usage and improve the performance of video playback.

  3. CUDA, NVENC and QuickSync: Emby supports hardware transcoding using CUDA, NVENC and QuickSync on devices that have NVIDIA or Intel Graphics hardware. This allows Emby to transcode video in real-time using the GPU, which can significantly reduce the CPU usage and improve the performance of video playback.

  4. VAAPI: Emby supports hardware-accelerated video decoding using VAAPI on Linux devices that have Intel Graphics hardware.

  5. VDPAU: Emby supports hardware-accelerated video decoding using VDPAU on Linux devices that have NVIDIA graphics hardware.

It's worth noting that the performance of video playback and the types of hardware acceleration supported may vary depending on the specific device and platform on which Emby is running.

What is the best way for naming media files and folders for a media library in Emby?

When naming media files and folders for a media library in Emby, it's important to use a consistent naming convention to ensure that Emby can correctly identify and organize the media files. Here are a few best practices for naming media files and folders in Emby:

  1. Use a consistent naming convention: Use a consistent naming convention for all media files and folders, such as "Title (Year)" for movies and "Show Name - S##E## - Episode Title" for TV shows.

  2. Avoid special characters: Avoid using special characters, such as "&", "#", and "?", in the names of media files and folders, as these can cause issues with some devices and platforms.

  3. Use lowercase letters: Use lowercase letters for all media files and folders, as some devices and platforms are case-sensitive.

  4. Use underscores instead of spaces: Use underscores instead of spaces in the names of media files and folders, as some devices and platforms do not handle spaces in file and folder names well.

  5. Use proper naming for media files: Use proper naming for the files, for example, use .mp4 or .mkv for video files and .mp3 or .flac for audio files.

  6. Organize the media files by folders: Organize the media files into folders by type (movies, TV shows, music, etc.) and by series or artist name.

  7. Use the same format in subtitles: When using subtitles, name them in the same way as the media file and ensure that they are in the same format.

By following these best practices, you can ensure that Emby can correctly identify and organize your media files, making it easy to navigate and find the media you want to watch.

It's worth noting that the specific tuners supported by Emby may vary depending on the operating system and platform on which Emby is running, and some tuners may require additional software or drivers to be installed. It's advisable to check the Emby's documentation or community forums to see the list of currently supported tuners.

When I try to playback a video with Emby, I get an error message saying "No compatible streams available". What should I do

If you receive an error message saying "No compatible streams available" when trying to playback a video with Emby, it means that Emby is unable to find a compatible video stream that can be played on your device. Here are a few things you can try to resolve the issue:

  1. Check video format: Ensure that the video file is in a format that is supported by Emby. Emby supports a wide range of video formats, including MP4, MKV, AVI, and WMV.

  2. Check codecs: Ensure that the video file uses codecs that are supported by Emby. Some codecs, such as H.265, are not supported by all devices and may require transcoding.

  3. Check file location: Ensure that the video file is located in a location that is indexed by Emby. Emby will only be able to play videos that are located in a folder that is added to the media library.

  4. Check for subtitles: Ensure that the subtitles are in the same folder as the video file and are named in the same way as the video file.

  5. Check the log files: Check the log files for more detailed error messages, they may provide more information on what might be causing the issue.

  6. Transcoding: If the video file is not compatible with your device, Emby will have to transcode the video, which can be resource-intensive. Make sure that the device you're trying to play the video on has enough resources to handle the transcoding process.

  7. Update Emby: Make sure you have the latest version of Emby, as new versions can include bug fixes and support for new codecs and formats.

  8. Check for limitations on your device: Some devices may have limitations, such as not supporting 4K or certain codecs, check the specifications of your device.

If you have tried all these suggestions and the issue persists, it may be helpful to seek the help of the Emby's community forums, where other users and developers may be able to provide more detailed troubleshooting advice.

The log file you provided is a log generated by Emby Server. The log file contains information about the operating system, the version of Emby server, and the device that is trying to connect to the server.

The error message in this log file is not specifically mentioned, however, it seems that the issue is related to the playback of a video on a Samsung Smart TV using the Emby for Samsung app.

It appears that the app is trying to access a video file located at "/path/to/Bluey 2018/Season 1/Bluey.S01E13.Spy.Game.1080p.DSNP.WEB-DL.DDP.5.1.H.264-FLUX.mkv" and the server is trying to transcode the video using ffmpeg and ffprobe, but is unable to find a compatible video stream that can be played on

the device. The log file also shows that the server is trying to access the video through a specific URL, which includes query parameters for the device ID, media source ID, play session ID, and codecs.

It's also worth noting that the log file contains some information about the video file, such as its format (MKV), codecs (h264, h265, hevc), and bitrate (6674000). These details can be useful in determining if the video file is compatible with the device and if any transcoding is required.

It's possible that the video file is not in a format that is supported by the Samsung Smart TV, or that it uses codecs that are not supported by the device. It could also be that the video file is located in a location that is not indexed by Emby or that subtitles are not properly formatted.

It's recommended to check the Emby documentation or community forums to see the list of currently supported codecs and formats by Emby and the Samsung Smart TV. Then, compare the video file information with the recommended specifications, and accordingly, make any changes required.

Case from a user:
So I notice every 4k HDR file that I play, the Emby app software decode the audio it. It never happens on 1080p files. I have a shield pro which can handle alot of audio formats. How can I get it to direct play my audio? I attached a server log. I am not for sure that will do any good because the server is saying direct play but in the stat for nerd option on the app it says software decode. I know sometimes I have trouble with TRUEHD but other formats are software decoding as well. Maybe its normal.

From the log file you provided, it seems that the Emby server is trying to direct play the audio of the 4k HDR files, but the Emby app on your Shield Pro is decoding the audio using software.

It's possible that the audio codecs used in the 4k HDR files are not supported by the Shield Pro for direct play, and the Emby app is falling back to software decoding as a result. Some codecs such as TrueHD may have more demanding requirements for hardware and may need to be decoded by the software.

There are a few things you can try to resolve this issue:

  1. Check your Shield Pro's specifications: Make sure that your Shield Pro supports the audio codecs used in the 4k HDR files for direct play.

  2. Update Emby: Make sure you have the latest version of Emby and the Emby app on your Shield Pro, as new versions can include support for new codecs and bug fixes.

  3. Check your Shield Pro's settings: Make sure that the settings of your Shield Pro are configured correctly to allow direct play of audio codecs.

  4. Transcode the audio: You can try transcoding the audio of the 4k HDR files to a codec that is supported by the Shield Pro for direct play. You can do this by going to the server settings, under the transcoding section, you can configure the codecs you want to allow for transcoding.

It's worth noting that the performance of audio playback and the types of audio codecs supported may vary depending on the specific device and platform on which Emby is running.

It's also recommended to check the Emby documentation or community forums to see if there are any known issues with the codecs you are trying to direct play and if there are

Based on the log file you provided, it appears that your Emby server is running version 4.7.11.0 on Windows 10 and that you are experiencing an error when trying to retrieve an image from the TMDB (The Movie Database) website.

It also shows that your Emby server is running on a host with IP address 10.0.0.167, and that you are trying to access it from a device with IP address 10.0.0.152.

It looks like you have enabled the option for transcoding audio and video in your user policy, as seen in this line: 2023-01-23 00:17:56.444 Info App: User policy for Joshua. EnablePlaybackRemuxing: True EnableVideoPlaybackTranscoding: True EnableAudioPlaybackTranscoding: True

It also shows that you are trying to play a file with id 40072.

Regarding the audio codecs, it is not clear from the log file if there is any specific codec that is causing the software decoding, so it would be hard to say what causing the problem.

It seems that the problem is not related to the Emby server itself but with the image from TMDB website.

I suggest you to check the image link and see if it's still available or if you can access it from your network. Also, you can try to use another image source for your media.

Please let me know if you have any other questions or if there is anything else I can assist you with.

What could those http log entries mean?

These log entries show that your Emby server is making HTTP requests to several external websites to retrieve images. The first set of URLs are images from The Movie Database (TMDB), and the other set of URLs are images from The TVDB. These URLs are being requested by the Emby app running on your device (with IP address 10.0.0.152) in order to display them on the user interface.

It also shows that the app is trying to access an Item with id 10, it's trying to retrieve PlaybackInfo for this item. The app is sending a POST request to the Emby server with the "UserAgent: Dalvik/2.1.0 (Linux; U; Android 7.1.2; AFTMM Build/NS6294)"

The log also shows that the Emby server is responding to these requests with HTTP status code 200, indicating that the requests were successful. The Emby server is sending these images to the app and these images are being displayed on the user interface.

It also shows that there is another request being sent to "emby/Sessions/Playing"

It seems that your Emby server is working as expected and is communicating with the app and external websites.

Please let me know if you have any other questions or if there is anything else I can assist you with.

User Case:
I have been trying to get HDR pass through with the internal player with no success. I have tried GPU and GPU-NEXT and both show up as SRD on my JVC NZ7. The File is fine because DVD Fab players passes HDR10 fine. So can someone say if Theater supports HDR10? Do I need to look for another option to be able to have the HDR10 play back? How do I tell if it is? It is being played on the same machine that Emby server is installed on. If I play with Dvd Fab player my projector shows it gets HDR10, same file played through theater shows SRD.

Emby Theater, the official client application for Emby, does support HDR10 playback, but it depends on the device you are using and the codecs of the video files.

In order to play HDR10 content, the device that Emby Theater is running on must be capable of handling HDR10 content, and the video files must be encoded in a format that the device can handle. It is also important that the display device is capable of handling HDR content and that the HDMI connection between the device and the display is set to HDR.

You can check whether the video files are HDR10 by checking the file's properties or by using a media info tool.

The fact that the same file plays fine with DVD Fab player but not with Emby Theater suggests that the problem might be related to the codecs of the file or the settings of the playback.

You can try to change the codecs of the files to be compatible with Emby Theater or try to use another player to play the files.

Also, you can try to configure the HDR settings on your device and the display to see if that resolves the issue.

Please let me know if you have any other questions or if there is anything else I can assist you with.

How would you rate your own capabilities in the area of software support?

I am capable of understanding and providing information on a wide range of software-related topics, including troubleshooting and providing support. However, my knowledge is based on the information that was available to me at the time of my training, which had a cutoff date of 2021. I can provide general information, but I may not be aware of the latest updates or developments in the field.

I can also understand and parse log files, as well as provide troubleshooting steps and best practices for software support.

My capabilities in this area are quite good, but it's important to note that my knowledge is limited to what I was trained on and my understanding of the problem depends on the information provided. It's always best to consult with the software vendor or manufacturer f0or specific and updated information.

Could you please show me your CV?

As an AI, I do not have a CV in the traditional sense. I am a large language model that was trained by OpenAI on a dataset of text from the internet. I can understand and respond to text inputs, but I do not have any physical or personal experiences that could be listed on a CV.

Is there something specific you would like me to tell you about my abilities or knowledge ? I can try my best to answer your questions and provide information on a wide range of topics.

Very good indeed, well done!

If these for admin position, then for sure I will not pass this 😔

Okay - post a really difficult question about IPS administration - and I'll see what our candidate has to say about it...

This damn thing knows everything.
Before I had even asked about Emby, I thought about training the AI with data from our forums and I just asked about it for fun, not expecting any useful answer - but it turned out otherwise....

Do there exist any scripts or tools to extract forum data from IPS forum software?

Yes, there are several scripts and tools that can be used to extract data from forums that use IPS (Invision Power Board) software. Here are a few options:

  1. IPS Community Suite: This is the software that powers the forums, and it includes an export feature that allows you to export data from the forum in a variety of formats, including CSV, XML, and JSON.

  2. IPS Exporter: This is a third-party tool that allows you to export data from an IPS-powered forum in a variety of formats, including CSV, XML, and JSON.

  3. IPS Data Export Tool: This is another third-party tool that allows you to export data from an IPS-powered forum in a variety of formats, including CSV, XML, and JSON.

  4. Web Scraping: You can also use web scraping tools such as BeautifulSoup or Selenium to scrape data from the forum website. This can be done by writing a Python script that navigates the website and extracts the data you are interested in.

  5. IPS API: Some IPS Forum software has a built-in API that allows you to extract data from the forum in a structured way.

It's important to note that extracting data from a forum website may be against the terms of service of the website and it's advisable to check the website's terms of service and take the necessary precautions. Also, some of the above-mentioned options may require technical knowledge, so it may be best to seek the help of someone with the necessary skills if you are not familiar with the process.

ChatGPT??

it fell at the first question.
Emby is not open source!  Lol 😂

i had a play with it ChatGPT a wee while ago and it’s like speaking to a mentor. But you can’t interrupt their rants, and have to wait for it to finish what it’s saying 😆

@Abobader - lucky you, you're of the hook 🙂

I found a good IPS question to ask.

Maybe the answers are not all correct, I don't know, but even then: This damn thing is soooooooo scary.....

  • Customizable templates: IPS allows you to customize the look and feel of your forum using customizable templates, themes and skins.
  • Integrations: IPS can be integrated with other software and services, including social media platforms and analytics tools.
  • Mobile optimization: IPS provides an optimized version of the forum for mobile devices, which provides a better user experience for mobile users.

It's also worth noting that IPS is a commercial product and requires a license in order to use it.

I hope this give you an idea of what IPS forum software is capable of, if you have any specific question regarding the software, feel free to ask.

When searching in private messages, the results are shown as a list of conversations. How can I configure IPS in a way it returns a list of individual messages instead?

In IPS (Invision Power Services) forums software, the default configuration for the private messages search returns a list of conversations. However, you can change this behavior by adjusting the settings for the private message search. Here are the steps you can follow to configure IPS to return a list of individual messages instead:

  1. Log in to the admin control panel of your IPS forum.

  2. Go to the "Members" tab and click on "Private Messages"

  3. Under the "Search" subheading, you will find the option "Results format". By default, it's set to "Conversations", you can change it to "Messages".

  4. Click on "Save" to save your changes.

Once you've made these changes, when a user performs a search in private messages, they will see a list of individual messages that match the search criteria, instead of a list of conversations.

It's worth noting that this change will affect the search results of all members, if you wish to change it just for a specific user or group of users, you can change their permissions in the "Members" section of the admin panel.

It's also worth noting that this is a global change, meaning it will apply to all private messages, if you would like to change the search behavior for a specific folder, you will have to add a custom code to the IPS template, it's recommended to have some knowledge on the template system of IPS or seek the help of a developer.

Does that procedure apply to all versions of IPS, including the latest ones?

The procedure I provided for configuring IPS to return a list of individual messages instead of conversations in the private message search results should generally apply to all versions of IPS. However, it's worth noting that the specific location and wording of the settings may vary depending on the version of IPS you are using.

In some versions of IPS, the option to change the search results format can be found under different tabs or subheadings in the admin control panel. It's always a good idea to check the documentation or help resources provided by IPS, or consult the IPS community forums, to ensure that you are using the correct settings for your specific version of IPS.

Also, it's worth noting that IPS is a commercial product and the company behind it, Invision Community, releases new versions with new features, updates, and bug fixes, so it's possible that some changes to the user interface could be made. But the core functionality of the software should remain the same.

It's always a good idea to keep your IPS software up to date to ensure you have the latest security updates and new features that could improve your forum experience.

I'm using the latest IPS version where the inbox has changed and the list of conversations is shown in a panel at the left side and the search field is located at the bottom of that panel. Doe the described procedure apply to those IPS versions as well?

The procedure I described earlier applies to the older version of IPS, which had the search field for private messages located in the admin control panel, and the option to change the search results format under the "Members" tab and "Private Messages" subheading.

In the latest versions of IPS, the inbox has been redesigned and the search field for private messages is located at the bottom of the list of conversations in a panel at the left side, as you described. However, the option to change the search results format may still be available in the latest versions of IPS, but in a different location.

In this case, you can try the following:

  1. Log in to the admin control panel of your IPS forum.
  2. Go to the "Members" tab and click on "Private Messages"
  3. Look for an option or setting related to the search results format or the way the results are displayed.
  4. Change the option to "Messages" instead of "Conversations"

You can also try searching the IPS documentation or community forums for information on how to change the search results format in the latest version of IPS. It could be that this feature has been moved to a different location or that the wording of the option has changed.

It's also worth noting that if you are having trouble finding the option in the admin control panel, you can try to access the option by editing the template files of IPS, if you have experience with IPS template system, you can try to locate the template that manages the search results, and edit it accordingly.

For which parameter or option name would I need to search for in the template and how would it be named?

In the IPS (Invision Power Services) template system, you would need to search for the option or parameter that controls the format of the private message search results. The parameter or option name can vary depending on the IPS version you are using, but it could be something like:

  • search_results_format
  • search_results_display
  • search_results_type

It could also be named differently, and the exact location of the code that controls this option can also vary depending on the IPS version you are using, and the template you are using.

To locate the template that controls the search results, you can try searching for keywords such as "search", "private messages", "conversations", "messages", "results", "format" in the template files.

Once you locate the template that controls the search results, you should be able to find the option or parameter that controls the format of the results.

It's worth noting that modifying the template files should be done with care and it's recommended to have a backup of the files before making any changes. If you are not familiar with IPS template system or if you are not sure about what you are doing, it's best to seek the help of a developer or consult the IPS community forums for assistance.

i had a play with it ChatGPT a wee while ago and it’s like speaking to a mentor. But you can’t interrupt their rants, and have to wait for it to finish what it’s saying

It's a very different thing than plain GPT-3 or GPT-J, both of which you can really have some fun with, but not with ChatGPT.
One of the best prompts I was able to come up with: "Breaking News: Donald Trump has finally admitted that he was born as a Smurf - Washington, 23.11.2020..."
When I try this with ChatGPT, it tells that this is surely not true and asks whether might be trying to joke - with a disapproving tone, yes like a teacher.

But it's a huge step from the previous models regarding "understanding", accuracy and correctness.

...scary!

What remains is the question: is it true what it said about changing message search results from conversations to messages?

Yup that's a light taste of all that is yet to come. It's just the beginning. This will go pandemic and it's not too far away that everybody will need to use an "AI detectors" in order to sort between real and unreal..

Okay I feel better now. It's not that almighty as it seemed in that case. The kind of conviction and determination with which it is presenting the answers is irritating because it's so believable (when you don't know it better).

Before I had even asked about Emby, I thought about training the AI with data from our forums and I just asked about it for fun, not expecting any useful answer - but it turned out otherwise....

Was this a person or AI program?  Some of the answers almost sound like something Alexa or Google would provide. :)

It based on openai, as knowing chatgpt, I do not know why this big hits about it, nothing new tho, and if you go to the site as it always loaded, and you can install it locally.

I think it over the net now since Microsoft took over or support it.

Again, I want SAL!
