Hi Guys,

After Truenas Scale upgrade (22.12.0) my Emby Server is empty.

I can login as usual by it's like I have to create a new server from scratch.

Is there a way to get existing server back...??

Hi Luke,

yes,

I originally updated from Scale Angelfish 22.02.04 to Scale Bluefin 22.12-RC1 and already there I had this issue.

After the latest new udate to the Bluefin 22.12.0 it is still same.

Maybe only solution is to create my Emby server new from scratch..???

Just an information from my side, maybe someone can make use of it :

From the start I want to point out and make really clear, that this is NOT a complain against TrueNas Scale, due to that this is a great system, I just try to explain the situation that I have

regarding running Truenas Scale  and media server apps so far.

For me the solution is to start from scratch with creating a new Emby server.  (maybe if you are a Linux specialist this is not needed, but for the average it is).

During all the last many Truenas Scale updates the changes is that massive that almost nothing ( Apps) is functioning as it did on the version before anyway.

Truenas Scale for sure knows what they are doing and also the reason for doing it, so again, no complaints here.

I tried that many times already, the changes goes from, permissions, network, containers, admin rights, Apps etc, actually everything which is necessary for apps like Emby will need

a new install and new setup. I spend a lot of time to try to get things running as before last update, I use many different forums, but almost never I could get it back without a

fresh install, so this is what I'm going to do from now on.

Since all my media is very well structured it is actually nice and smooth to start Emby from scratch, of course it takes some time to scan all but anyway.

Before the last update to Scale 22.12.0, I deleted all apps, made the update and install all apps (which also is updated to fit the new Scale version) again.

By doing this you will not run in to issues that your, apps, connections, containers, permissions, etc, not fits, or is not accepted by the new version.

I'm now running the latest version of Truenas Scale (Bluefin) with a Emby Server made from scratch, and I must say that my Emby Server is running fantastic, amazing fast and smooth.

I'm not saying that this is a solution to solve the problems after every bigger Scale update, but I did it many times and I saved a lot of time compare to start fixing it as is.

In the above topic my question was, where is my existing server and how to get it back..??

I think this will be a very hard one to answer for our Emby Team here, exactly because of these massive changes in these updates/upgrades.

I'm afraid there is no 1,2,3 answers and you back up running again.

You shouldn't have to go through all of this to maintain software on your media server.

I don't often share my opinion unasked but this has been on my mind for some time. I've played around with TrueNAS Scale and for people looking to replace or build a home NAS or media server expecting something like Synology or QNAP this product is a square peg for a round hole. I found it to be too much of a niche solution with a very specific usage and approach in mind. It could be that Scale hasn't reached maturity or the critical mass needed to get the right level of contribution to its application libraries. Either way, IMO it's not ready for prime time. As seen in many posts in these forums the knowledge bar is set pretty high for TrueNAS Scale.

Hi Q-Droid,

I completely agree with you.

I'm running different Synology NAS since a long time already, and still do, and this is, like you said, right out of the box.

But I wanted to try to build my own NAS, so I tried out different software's just to check it out.

Actually the way I use my Nas' is for media only mostly, so yes, fot this TrueNas is totally overkill, but at the same time I must also admit,

that I never had a media server, or media servers, running and handling all things that fast and smooth, so I think that I will keep it and continue,

to see how it will develop in the future, even there will be a lot of struggle.

But anyway, it seems that im able to keep it alive so far, so lets see.

I am running full fledged EMBY server on truenas from the release version now on the scale bluefin, and have everything working from dnla to wakeon lan and ssl accessing from wan.

I did some modifications to some files to make it work like i would like

I came from Synology and never will go back,

As the synology was dropping disk's like flies, and all those disks that were dropping are running 3 years on a freenas as i used it for rsync my files from Synology there.

(Synology lacking robustness on raid, imo)

Plus i don't like were they go with the disk's compatibility and the new models with ought hardware acceleration , not to mention prices...

It's difficult , but not so difficult in the end, as I had no previous experience in linux.

That's my personal experience and opinion on the matter, if anyone needs help to setup EMBY on Scale, you can ask me

Hi @dgrigo,

With some help I now get my setup running without issues on Truenas Scale Bluefin, only thing that I now have is that I need a password reset in Emby.

But how to get in to the config folder where the passwordreset text file is located...???

@bacardi8

I always use custom path for the emby config. Dunno if you did this so my config stays intact when I install uninstall versions.

That way I keep and all metadata intact

So it goes like this , have a dataset in storage called library.

Under this dataset I have directories

Movies

TV shows

Record

Config etc

As for the installation I select 2 host paths one for emby config.

And one for library.

So my emby directory that has all the configs easy to edit is library/config.

That said, I don't know which directory has all those files if you let config without a host path.

I would do a text search under /root for the mb.lic as root user, that if you have entered a license file and not be a free user.

And I would check that results.

Else uninstall and do proper install like I suggest here, config host path.

If you need anything else ask, sorry dunno were the path is without host path in installation.

PS. mb.lic exists in backup directory also, so that's not the path you need, the right is ....../..../config/mb.lic

and here is the picture of the paths on installation for your reference

Hi Again,

Yes, I could start a new Emby setup, but I was just interested in to know how and where this text file, send by Emby, is going.

To make a password reset you need to read that text file, and so far it seems nobody knows where to find that on Truenas Scale.

Maybe you could try to request for a password reset in Emby (just click forgot password at the login page) and then try to see if you are able to locate and read that text file

on your Truenas system and with your current setup.

Regarding the setup of Bluefin, I actually followed a guide from the Truenas Scale forum to get Bluefin up running, (without disable of host path safety check),

but I don't think we should discuss that in here.

We could maybe find another place to discuss Truenas Scale Bluefin further if we like, since this is a Emby forum.

Cheers

Take a look one post before the host path post,

I gave you this info

So my emby directory that has all the configs easy to edit is library/config.

That said, I don't know which directory has all those files if you let config without a host path.

I would do a text search under /root for the mb.lic as root user, that if you have entered a license file and not be a free user.

And I would check that results.

If you are not familiar with command line install wincp, enable ssh , and connect as root, then you will find the intuitive search.

I can't do that for you, as i have my server running with the options i needed, and i never used password reset

Hi dgrigo,

Thanks for you info regarding that.

It was different settings in my Bluefin setup that was wrong, that's why I couldn't access my existing  Emby server (permissions, kubernetes, SMB, etc..).

There is a lot of changes in the Bluefin version and it seems there is still issues to be solved, so even I'm running well at the moment, Emby is running very well,

with all access, permissions and so on, I think it's still too early to post my Emby setup here and to say "this is how it have to be made".

Already next month there will be a new Bluefin update, so let's see.

Cheers
