Can’t connect to UnRAID server via Kodi using Emby Next Gen 6.2.20

Have the same issue on 3 instances of Kodi (2 Firesticks running 19.4 and Shield Pro running 19.3) trying to connect with Next Gen. Server shows up as Tower in list but won’t connect. I tried Emby Connect as well as manually putting server address in to no avail. Log attached. I’m able to access server fine thru Emby app and web interface. Thanks for help!

Hi there, what exactly happens when you try?

I see a message in the login window that says could not connect. With the other login methods, it just sits there on the login screen.

Well, the log reports server timeouts. Next-gen cannot access the Emby server for some reason.

Is the address correct? -> http://192.168.1.71:8096/emby/system/info/public

Also could be a firewall issue or something else is blocking.

From the same devices? Probably Kodi app has no network permissions in Android?

Yeah same devices and address is correct. I agree it’s likely a permissions issue but I’m not exactly sure what I need to do to fix it? Is there another user login within kodi (outside of Emby Next Gen) that I need to configure? Seems as though something server side has changed since all 3 instances of kodi have the same issue on different devices. Been a while since I set these up so apologies for the n00b like questions! Thanks

Edit: the server address and port are correct but if I put that address into a browser I get this (no idea if Id is important?):

The message from Emby server is valid. This was just a verification that the plugin tries connecting with the correct data.

The main issue is still the timeout. For some reason the plugin cannot reach this address. You need to look in the Android settings for Kodi's permissions. As it's working with emby app on the same device, I would rule out a network or firewall issue.

When you say Android settings you mean within the Nvidia Shield or configured somewhere else in Kodi? Like I said, weird thing is I have same issue on 3 different clients (2 AFTV’s and the Shield).

I mean NVidia shield, yes. Actually I don't have such devices, but as far as I know Nvidia Shield (and Firesticks as well) are all Android based.

And yes I agree, it's weird. Did next-gen ever work on those boxes? Probably you should also try the plugin on a PC/Mac. If it's also not working there, it's probably not a device related issue.

Yeah, everything was working fine a couple days ago. I was having issues with Sonarr, Radarr, DelugeVPN, NZBgetVPN but got those sorted and realized I wasn't able to connect to the server for the past couple of days. I also updated the UnRAID OS to 6.11 and then 6.11.1 but server was accessible before and after the first upgrade and I just updated it again during this downtime with no improvement.

I scoured the Nvidia Shield for a setting to configure and couldn't find anything.  As far as Emby Next Gen, what is the "add user to session" option supposed to do? It appears to do nothing when I  click it.

I will not work, cause you are not connected in the first place. The feature adds an additional Emby user to the one you used as the main (login) user.

The additional user will receive the same content progress updates on Emby server. So it's a collaboration thingy.

About the connections issues, there is barely anything I could to. As you confirmed it was working before on the same devices and after updates it's broken. There must be something wrong specific to your setup.

The main issue is, "http://192.168.1.71:8096/emby/system/info/public" cannot be reached from next-gen. Unfortunately I cannot tell you why this happened 🙄

When you log the errors, are you able to log the http response codes? This could be a normal network connection failure. It could also be that he configured Emby Server network settings in such a way to cause the server to reject the requests. Printing the http response code in the log would help narrow that down.

We can also find that out from the emby server log though.

Current log reports:

Probably there are additional information in debug log mode. @jkasanic, don't post debug logs here without removing (manually) the api-keys. You could also send me the logs via PM.

Frankly, I'm not expecting any additional information. http communication is provided by (python "requests" lib). The exception was cached here:

            except requests.exceptions.ReadTimeout:
                LOG.error("[ ServerTimeout ] %s" % data)

                if Binary:
                    return b""

                return {}

https://requests.readthedocs.io/en/latest/api/#exceptions

The actual response code is currently not available in the logs.

The timeout setting is 5 seconds. If the server response takes more then 5 seconds, it's probably a false positive, however. If the server response is that slow, there is still something wrong in the network/Emby server setup. Also a single timeout is not a showstopper, there are several retries.

Probably try the 7.x versions? Actually the connection specific code is not very different as in 6.x but probably a fresh plugin installation might help.

Also a device id reset (in next-gen config menu) is worth a try.

The log also shows, Kodi is using the "ZeroconfAndroid" network config/mode which is also a bit crappy. Not sure if possible to change it under Kodi/Android.

Guys, thanks for the responses. I'm traveling for work over the next 10 days so will report back as soon as I can.  Thanks for your help!

Let us know how you get on. Thanks.

I’m having trouble trying to install the 7.x.x Next Gen Addon. I tried to install the last 7..x.x zip file in Public Beta but it keeps installing the 6.2.20 version?! I’ll be honest in that I’m a Kodi n00b so any help you could provide on this is appreciated. I forgot to get the Emby server log but will do that this weekend. Thanks @quickmic

7.x versions are not yet available via Emby's Kodi repository. You can sideload them in Kodi via install addon from zip. As you have 6.x installed, you can simply use the "kodi.emby.media" folder and load it from "Public testing".

If this is what you already did, I need additional information what went wrong. Not sure what you actually mean with "Public Beta".

I think I mixed up the name of the folder (ie Beta vs Testing). So I tried to side load the latest 7.x.x addon as you described (after uninstalling 6.6.20). To my surprise, once the addon installed (ie got a notification from Kodi that Emby Next Gen Addon was installed), the version info under My Addons said it was the 6.6.20?!

This is for sure an issue and frankly, I don't know why. This must be specific to your setup. Can you please send me a kodi.log after you installed 7.x version.

Installation fails. Can’t unpack the zip file. I’ll send log via pm. Thanks for help!

Thanks for the log. There is still a serious network issue in your setup.

The kodi.log reports...

Quote
CCurlFile::Open failed with code 503 for http://kodi.emby.media/Public%20testing/plugin.video.emby-next-gen-7.9.2.zip:

...which means, Kodi cannot even download the file.

The URL is correct -> http://kodi.emby.media/Public testing/plugin.video.emby-next-gen-7.9.2.zip

503 means -> Service Unavailable

Not sure if I can help you cause those issues are not related to the plugin.

Seems something is blocking network access. However, you can try Kodi on a PC/MAC etc and I'm sure there are no issues.

btw, the followup issue in kodi.log...

Quote
FileZip: unable to open zip file http://kodi.emby.media/Public%20testing/plugin.video.emby-next-gen-7.9.2.zip

...is "normal" due to Kodi cannot load the file from internet in the first place.

Additional info:

This (download) issue is not related to Emby server or the plugin. Kodi cannot even download a file from a regular http website.

Yeah. So the first try of the plug-in download failed and Kodi told me so. I tried again and it worked. I now have the version 7 plug-in installed  but I can’t connect to my server. I’ll try to get some support from the unraid forum. Like I said, all of my Kodi instances stopped working at the same time even though the Emby app works fine. Must be a server side or local Kodi network setup issue. Something must’ve changed with the unraid OS or my server side setup.Bizarre…

Oki, but as mentioned. You can try Kodi on a PC/Mac. At least you can rule something out with this test. If it works on PC, the issue is most likely located on the boxes/boxes communication to unraid.

If same issue on PC -> unraid/network config issue.
