Issues with 4K playback on my LG TV

Hi all,

I've got an LG UH650V 4K TV running the Emby app (which is up to date), and a Windows 10 PC running Emby server 4.7.6.0. I'm increasingly getting an issue playing back, from what I can tell, some 4K movies.

I start play and just get a black screen. I press play again and get the "please wait" spinning circle. If I look on the server it looks like the movie is playing. The thing is, one of these movies, I know did work a month or so ago, and now doesn't.

The movie in question is encoded as follows:

Title4K HEVC HDR10
CodecHEVC
ProfileMain 10
Level150
Resolution3840x2160
Aspect Ratio16:9
InterlacedNo
Framerate23.976
Bitrate19 mbps
Video RangeHDR10
Colour Primariesbt2020
Colour Spacebt2020nc
Colour Transfersmpte2084
Bit Depth10 bit
Pixel Formatyuv420p10le
Reference Frames1

I've got no idea where to start with this issue, and would really appreciate a little guidance.

Thanks.

i think emby staff has given up with the app. everything i report they just ask for all the info then they dont give me anything to try. might have to switch to jellyfin or back to plex. its been like this for months.

i have the exact same problem with 4k content going to black screen after it freezes then it plays then it does it again and again through the whole movie and 4k content is way too dark. i have given all my info for other issues many time in the past without recieving any updates from staff encase they are even working on it on their end or even been given anything i can try to fix it on my end from staff. the other users have been giving me ideas instead. i no longer expect staff to do a single thing. i have started putting my 4k content on plex instead which doesnt have this issue and the picture is brighter too. oh and yes the issue happens on both android apps.

@eeeeeesy  are you still having an issue with this?

i will try 4k another time but i think the problem was caused by installing bad apps from the google play store on my android box. the last thing i remember from when i was using 4k which was a while ago was i was getting a black screen but a factory reset fixed it. then after that i had a problem with the screen just looking dark comapared to 1080p.

Playback on Android relies on the media app used for playback (if not using the embedded player in the Emby app). As for the picture being dark, there is a good chance it has to do with the 4K video being HDR (or Dolby Vision - DV, which can have odd colors). If you are re-encoding an HDR video, make sure it is not DV, and the older the HDR format the better -- ie. SMPTE ST 2086, HDR10 compatible, BT.2020. Some devices may not be able to handle HDR at all though, or 10-bit... in which case it would require a different format such as 8-bit 4K, vanilla 8-bit 1080p, or at minimal, transcoding it on the server to something without HDR. (Most devices in the last 3-4 years support 10-bit HDR though in my experience with my devices.

Hi there, let's look at an example. Please attach the information requested in how to report a media playback issue. Thanks!

Also,  Can you try sideloading our standard android app on the same device and see how that compares?

Hi, it is the same troubleshooting process regardless. Can you please provide an example using the instructions I linked to above? Thanks !

Hi all,

Sorry for starting this thread all that time ago and no continuing with it. But life happened, as it does.

I'll pick this up now. Still having issues with this, and it does only seem to be with some 4K media.
I'm running Emby server 4.7.11.0 on a Windows 10 PC.

I'm trying to play movie on my LG 49UH650V-ZB using both the Emby app (Version 1.0.37) and also on Screenplay (Version 1.5.8).

The Emby player just has the spinning loader going constantly, where as the Screenplay app just has a blank black screen.

Attached are the logs when I tried to play with both apps.

Let me know if you need anymore info.

Thanks.

Yes. They are all 4K.

But this one played fine:

Title4K HEVC HDR10
CodecHEVC
ProfileMain 10
Level153
Resolution3840x2072
Aspect Ratio480:259
InterlacedNo
Framerate23.976
Bitrate6 mbps
Video RangeHDR10
Colour Primariesbt2020
Colour Spacebt2020nc
Colour Transfersmpte2084
Bit Depth10 bit
Pixel Formatyuv420p10le
Reference Frames1

 But this one didn't:

Title4K HEVC
CodecHEVC
Codec Tagdvhe
ProfileMain 10
Level150
Resolution3836x1602
Aspect Ratio1918:801
InterlacedNo
Framerate23.976
Bitrate14 mbps
Bit Depth10 bit
Pixel Formatyuv420p10le
Reference Frames1

But like I say in the original post, they play if I connect via a PC and use the browsers.

I don't know if this is relevant or not, but when it first started happening, when I video seemed to be stuck, if I connected to the server by, say my phone, and restart the server, it seemed to nudge the playback into life. This doesn't work any more.

This might be helpful, maybe not, but the first video was a MKV wrapper, whereas the second, (unplayable one), was an MP4. A bit later I'll try some more and see if I can find some kind of connection as to which play and which don't.

Thanks,

Your second file is a DV file, likely Profile 5 so no fallback HDR layer, and your TV appears to have not DV support.

What does MediaInfo show for that file?

The best way to see if the file will technically play, is to copy it to a USB stick and try and play directly from the TV.  If it plays, then it's an emby problem - if not, then it's a file issue and it is simply not compatible.

The file looks to be possible badly made - as it has Audio as Track 0 and then Video as Track 1 - this is not normal.  I would try another file unless you have the skills to remux it ...
