Hey Guys

I am having a problem on 2 seperate remote systems 1 pc and 1 shield 2019 pro. After about 10 seconds the video freezes and crashes kodi. I dont know what the issues could be

Kodi crashing is not something the addon can do normally, i mean even if the addon crashes it should not case kodi to crash. For kodi to crash on playback kodi is having problems with the video stream from the emby server.

Is this with all items you play or just one particular item?

You can try forcing a transcode playback from the context menu, pick a really low bitrate to make sure it is going to have transcode the video, if this plays then it is something weird in the source media files.

But it did it on 2 fresh installs 1 on shield 2019 and a PC both did the same thing. It freezes up Kodi on both

Locally it works fine but remotely it freezes after about 8-10 seconds of plalying

sounds like a network issue, that is one of the reason I said try a force transcode and pick a very low bitrate, this will help you track down the issue.

Crashes or Freezes kodi, they are very different things. crashing could be a bug in kodi, freezing might just be network io blocking.

Ok on the network what will I be looking for ? I installed embycon on my uncles pc bc he loves kodi bc the volume amplfier (Yeah hes old and very tinny eared lol) Now my buddy who lives in a different state tried running it on his network and it did the same thing and that was on a shield. I am kinda at a loss for words on what could be causing it. Emby for Android TV works fine but embycon not so swell remotely. Wish I could get my 73 year old uncle to invest in an android setup but he is set in his ways lol

Update :  Force transcoding the stream played fine at its normal bitrate. Why would that be ?

It could be all network related but debugging this sort of thing remotely is hard.

There are a few things you can try, as I mentioned to force transcode, this will help answer the question if it is a bandwidth issue or not.

The other thing you can play with is Kodi streaming video cache:

https://kodi.wiki/view/HOW-TO:Modify_the_video_cache

This can help with slow or bursty network setups.

Force Transcoding worked without changing bitrate its weird

does it have the same problem for ALL videos?

if it is just a few then it could be something to do with the way they are muxed.

All videos and tv shows. Does HEVC have something to do with it ?

sorry I dont know.

the addon EmbyCon is just the middle man, it asks the server for a list of media files to play and if a user selects a media file to play EmbyCon asks the server what the streaming URL should be, it then sends this URL to Kodi for playback. EmbyCon does not actualy interact the the video stream at all, its all Kodi native that does that.

Believe it or not Emby-nextgen works great but I like embycon lol

well that is weird, they should do the same thing when it comes to what URL to stream, unless next gen is forcing transcode and thus side stepping the issue you are seeing with EmbyCon. You can check this in the Server Dashboard.

Both plugins should be calling /PlaybackInfo and in the responce get the URL the server builds for the client and then just pass that url to Kodi for playback.

Well, form my understanding there are two possible explanations.

First, you used native mode in next-gen.

Second, you disabled http/2 in next gen.

As TeamB mentioned, review the "shield" thread and try disable http/2 via advancedsettings.xml. As far as I know, this is the core issue for shield users.

From technical point of view, there is no reason why embycon shouldn't work, if next gen works in addon mode.

Is that the mode where you jam the actual path directly in the kodi db? If so i dont think that is the case here as he is having issues with remote machines and they can not use direct path at all.

So it was the http/2 advanced setting that fixed it?  i thought that might be a long shot as you mentioned you were having the same issue on both shield and pc and i did not think pc had this http/2 problem. Perhaps this issue is more wide spread than i thought.
