When a TV advertises "support" for DV, that doesn't mean that it will support each DV profile in each video container and with each codec variant. It's not much of Emby's business anymore as even when that works, it would rule out all Emby functionality (re-scaling, re-encoding, segmenting for HLS delivery, subtitle burn-in, etc.), which means that as soon as any of these would be used, you will get wrong tinted video, no matter what your TV's capabilities are. They shout very loudly (just like Apple) that what they have produced is SO MUCH better than its predecessors, that they have convinced the masses (so they can make more money). Is Dolby Vision better that HDR10+, or even HDR10? Eh! Maybe... If you have perfect visual acuity, expensive displays which are correctly calibrated, you have the correct media, that media was perfectly graded by the colorist and you watch it in an environment that is tailored to the display calibration. Since our discussion here I blacklisted release groups which produce releases with the green/purple problem. This works quite good. Looks like some release groups handle it right, some not. Could anybody explain how the first group achieves that, I guess they do some postprocessing of the video like adding some kind of fallback? Unfortunately I'm having a bunch of old files which are renamed by filebot - so I don't know the groups of these files anymore. Is there any script (optimal case for linux) to check these files for wrong colors by reading out the dv profile or whatever is needed for a suspected case of the green/purple issue? It's what is used in basically all web content with DV like Disney+ or Netflix or whatever. This works fine for them because if your setup doesn't support Dolby Vision they send you an entirely different file with either HDR or SDR instead. But if you have a local file with DV profile 5 and you try to play it on a setup that doesn't fully support DV, you get the green/purple mess. Profile 7 is what is used for UHDs and offers fallback, as does profile 8. Most playback clients that advertise DV support only support profile 5. Is there something in mediainfo (or any other tool, preferably with cli support) where I can see whether the video has added that fallback although it is dv profile 5? KMBanana 83 Posted March 22, 2023 Share Posted March 22, 2023 DV is confusing with lots of options, and definitely don't treat this as fully accurate or me as an expert. I really only am somewhat familiar with remuxing a UHD disk, which uses profile 7 already and therefore already supports fallback. It isn't as simple as just adding fallback, if it's DV Profile 5 it cannot support fallback. Someone would need to extract the DV information from a DV file, then apply it to an HDR/SDR version while converting it to DV Profile 7/8. In general I would assume anything labeled DV without explicitly also being labeled as HDR10 is profile 5 and therefore has no fallback. This isn't a perfect solution, I believe files with DV and HDR10+ would only list as supporting DV despite HDR10+ having HDR10 fallback inherently. For DV exclusive streams, since Dolby made it proprietary, reverse engineering has been performed to identify the metadata in DV and map it so it can be read. Geniuses like Softworkz and his brethren at ffmpeg found a way to read the DV metadata, but I believe not all profiles. This is where other like minded geniuses come in. Haasn is one of the mpv developers. He's pretty much the only maintainer for the video decoding they have , now. He developed libplacebo. This is what gpu-next uses in mpv. Haasn was able to find a way to read and decode DV in libplacebo. There is an extreme amount of data and information in regards to this. I won't pretend to understand it all. These guys are on a level all their own. I have read some of the code that Haasn wrote. Not only do I not understand the language, but the mathematical equations to calculate and be written to adhere to the multitude of tonal curves, which he also rewrote, is simply mind-blowing. I hope (presume) the core DV implementation will also allow you to filter by HDR Type - in this instance you would search by DV Only. Example of the Tag Filters below from the Plugin - it does all the HDR layers and all the Audio layers too - so you can get a very specific filter if you wish. ie show me all DV5 items with DTS:X audio, for example. It is a Web download, from what I see there is no bluray/uhd bluray available for this. Either there seems to be a way to transform dv profile 5 to profile 8 or some streaming services deliver profile 8 instead of profile 5? Will produce funky colours on any equipment not capable of reading the colour space. Not backwards compatible with HDR10. dv 7 = Dolby Vision + HDR10. Will use DV if available, but will fallback to HDR10 if not. ripped from from UHD Disk media. dv 8 = Dolby Vision + HDR10. Will use DV if available, but will fallback to HDR10 if not. Tonemapping for DV5 is also a possibility but I don't think Emby wanna go there as its reverse engineering DV. So what I know so far: Amazon devices only support profile 5 Nvidia Shield Pro 2019 supports profile 5/7/8 What about the Nvidia Shield Tube and the new Nokia Streaming Box 8010? What's the best approach finding out what profiles are supported without buying the box? Is this chip based? I guess it is a licensing thing so not chipbased? Is there any alternative to the shield supporting all profiles at all? Also I'm wondering. Infuse added dolby vision profile 8 support to its app on TVOS. So shouldn't Emby theoretically being able to do the same for Android/AndroidTV - independent of the hardware support? Other than obviously using Theater/mpv (which would be my first recommendation), probably Shield Pro, but I'm not sure if it has the capability of tone-mapping DV. I would think it can.
