Video file buffering every few minutes while playing

Hi. i have seen this issue mentioned in other threads as well but i couldnt find a plausible solution. trying my luck again:

i have an emby server setup via a synology NAS (everything is on the NAS) and using on the local network only (for now) . The video files work properly over the laptop, desktop and tv. no lags, no issues at all. However, when i try to play the videos on the phone, they start to buffer after every other minute (sometimes 1, sometimes after 2 or 3)

everything is set to default/auto so i am hoping the system picks up the correct configurations that the network should work with. internet speed shouldnt be an issue as well (again, works on other devices properly) and we dont have any "power" users at home except for myself.

log is attached.

thanks

Naveed

Hi, look at your server transcoding performance (see the fps):

Your server just cant' transcode this quickly enough to be playable. If your server is an underpowered machine, then you may want to try limiting your playback to video files that your devices can play directly without server transcoding.

Please let us know if this helps. Thanks.

Hi Luke

sorry for the late response. im using a Synology DS220j for hosting the emby server at the moment. i checked the file info and the bitrate required for it is 3.3mbps . i played a 1.1 mbps file and it plays without any issues.

Before going for the worst case scenario of putting aside nearly 90% of my video files , i thought of fiddling with the "max streaming bitrate" that should be present for the emby android app. but for some strange reason I cant see to find this setting. has its name been changed or is it hiding somewhere I cant figure out?

I see it mentioned in the emby FAQ but i cant locate it anywhere. Can you please help me with locating it? there is a section for playbacks but that seems to affect service wide performance.

thanks.

The Max streaming bitrate server side is only for remote sessions (server>network or set in users to individually overwrite) - it is not applied when streaming on the local network.

If you wish to restrict it locally (as well as remotely), then you need to do it on the end Client - in the settings, then limit the bitrate to what you need.

To note - If your internal network cannot play a 3.3Mbit/sec file - then there is something very wrong ;)  Check your phone has wi-fi on ...

Hi, yes i had re-read the description for that setting and it wasnt what i was looking for.

Regarding the internal network, i tried on 3 separate days, wifi was always on and i was the only user at the time , so , yes its hard to believe. although i am now guessing if transcoding is the culprit (?) , then maybe the 512mb ram limitation on the NAS might be the cause? maybe its not able to serve as quickly as the client demands.

Ok , i think i have solved this one. i was trying to look at the server configurations to solve another issue related to a different topic, and i setup a user defined path for the transcoding files and unchecked the option to force extract subs from the files. now i am not getting any buffering in playback. tried a few files and its all good for now.image.png.70351f57bc1e37c2883b88d41da236f5.png
