MB3 won't start upon reboot and requires a reinstall to start

Hello,

I apologize for my lack of details, but I cannot even get MediabBrowser to start to provide me with the information on version I am running.

I have had MB3 for  years, and rarely have trouble.  Tonight I was watching something and got a message that new upgrade was available and if I wanted to apply.  I did, and continued watching.  When I rebooted the machine (for other reasons), MB3 will not start.  I cannot figure this one out.  I tried rebooting and restarting to no avail.

When I say cannot start, if I try to go into MB3, it says MB3 is not running.   When I go to view the MB3 configuration, it gives me a bad URL message.  When I try to restart the server, it fails.  When I try to install a new version I get a systemIO error.

Please help.  I didn't even finish my movie.

I even tried installing the beta version and when I did that and started the install, I got an error.

there are some issues there. why don't you try going to

C:\Users\vidster.ASGARD\AppData\Roaming\MediaBrowser-Server\plugins

delete all .dll files. this will essentially uninstall all of your plugins. once you're back up and running, you can then re-install them.

C:\Users\vidster.ASGARD\AppData\Roaming\MediaBrowser-Server\data\authentication.db

Try deleting that file then starting. That's the obvious error in your logs causing a problem. See if it rebuilds correctly after clients log in again.

I tried this as well.  No luck.

I don't want to have to do a full uninstall and reinstall, and rebuild it.  That could take a while and I would lose many of my details.

I cannot start the server, or get to the configuration page to see any details still.  When I restart the server the log window pops open.

Windows Media Center works just fine.

I also tried installing the newest dev version and I am getting this odd message.

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/46573484/MB3%20install%20Error.png

It is a path denied error.   The path is valid and I am running the setup program as an administrator.

If I could delete this last message, I would, as I figured this one out.  This was caused by me having MB3 running, even in its crippled state where the host was not starting, but just having it open was locking the path, so that the install failed.  When I shut that down, I was able to run the beta install and it seems to have worked.  But everything is in a new state and I forget what my plugins were and have lost the viewing record.

I still wish I could understand what happened, or how to avoid this?

I am having an odd issue, where upon a restart of the PC, MB3 does not automatically start.  It also, will not start from the configuration icon in the system tray, or a restart server command.

I have to reinstall the version from the website.  And then it immediately works.

This is a nuisance, compared to the issues I had the other day.  But none the less I would like it to just restart and I fear it is indicative of a larger issues.

This in theory, should be a new issue, but it is somewhat related to my issues yesterday which is why it is still in this thread.

I have tried everything, including installing both Dev and Release version.  No luck.

Each reboot the server will not start, and can only be started if I reinstall.

  • 2 weeks later...

find the server's program data folder, back it up, reboot. after the reboot, compare the folder to the backup. i have not heard of anyone else reporting this so I don't have an immediate resolution at this point.

This continues to be an issue.  Every time I reboot MB icon is in the system tray, but it is not a working instance of MB3.  I have to exit the instance and then run the set up program again.  Then MB3 works just fine.  While this sounds minimally invasive it is becoming a problem for me if  need to remote in and am on travel, and the server has rebooted for an reason.

This is really crazy.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Any help isolating or something?

It is 28GB of data you are asking me to back up.  It is a lot to sort through.  Do you have any suggestions on what to look for in comparison?

Or better yet?  Should it be 28GB?

Ignore anything in the cache folder - that is likely where your size is.

Pay attention to the System and Config folders.

That folder is from MB 2.

On the first page of the server dashboard there is a section that shows you where all the key folders are.

A quick way to get there would be to enter %appdata%\mediabrowser-server in an explorer window.

Luke meant the server's program data folder - logically, not literally under "programdata".  And that is in the location I indicated - %appdata%\mediabrowser-server.

He is just hoping you find a clue in what is in the config and system folders that may be different between when the server will and won't start.

No, that was your old MB2 folder again.  But, the point is, we won't be able to spot anything.  What Luke was saying to do was take a snapshot of it when it was and wasn't working and compare the two just to see if anything is different.

Well that is also interesting.  I got to that directory by following your directions on, "

A quick way to get there would be to enter %appdata%\mediabrowser-server in an explorer window.".

Could this legacy pathing be part of the issue?

so here is the contents of proper folder.

is there a way to backup all settings?  Since I can't seem to fix this, I am pondering uninstalling and reinstalling.  But I would rather not have to rebuild all the paths and permissions.

Traction Tim

I am also experiencing Mediabrowser 3 failing to restart after a reboot.

Could it be anything to do with using a "Standard User" Windows account rather than an "Admin user" ?

1. Mediabrowser server resides on my CCTV pc in the garage. It is only re-booted for (Win7 32 bit) updates.

2. I have just rebooted it and now the client PC's cannot find the MediaBrowser server.

3. Re-installing Mediabrowser 3 gets it all running again, and the client PC's can find the MB3 server, and it still knows I am Tim.

4. There is no C:\Users\vidster.ASGARD\ path.

5. The C:\Users\Tim\AppData\Roaming directory doesn't have a Mediabrowser folder in it.

6. The C:\Users\Tim Admin\ AppData\Roaming directory DOES have the MediaBrowser files in it.

So, how can I run the MediaBrowser.ServerApplication.exe process from a standard account ? Will MB3 even work correctly without using an admin account ? I was beginning to think somebody kept deleting MB3 before I saw this thread !

You need to give your standard user access to the folder where the server is installed (the admin user's folder).  Or, just run it under the admin user.
