Episodes representation in case of combined episodes

Hi,

I often see that Amazon / Netflix and Co. do change the episode composition. Meaning:

Amazon: they combine 3 Episodes (each ~ 4-5mins) to one combined Episode with ~ 13min

Netflix: they combine 4 Episodes to one combined Episode with ~ 18min

The downside of this combining of episodes is that the Episodes get wrong texts from the IMDb etc..

Instead of manually cut the combined episodes it woulde be nice to have a textfile for the "missing" episode  and within this textfile a reference point which file should be played and from which minutes/seconds on.

e.g. the original video files

Peppa Wutz_S01E01_Matschepampe! - Sausia ist weg! - Beste Freunde - Polly Piepmatz (DE-EN).mkv

Peppa Wutz_S01E05_Verstecken - Im Kindergarten - Mama Wutz muss arbeiten - Schweinchen in der Mitte (DE-EN).mkv

the info files:

Peppa Wutz_S01E02_Sausia ist weg.nfo

and within the textfile there is the reference file and a timestamp:

"Peppa Wutz_S01E01_Matschepampe! - Sausia ist weg! - Beste Freunde - Polly Piepmatz (DE-EN).mkv

00:04:46" <-- hh:mm:ss

Does this make sense?

or is it easier to just cut the files?

Or are there other solutions to overcome this problem?

Thank you!

Br, Florian

well, I just realized how easy it is to cut the files with MKVToolNix...so I would think the feature request is obsolete now.

in this example one combined file is divided into 4 parts based on their timestamps...then the multiplexing is started and quite fast finished... 🙂

But since these are actually sequential episodes per TVDB you could just name them like this S01E01-E4. and S01E05-E8.

Now if they were none sequential episode like most toons are then splitting them would be required

hmm, doesn't work the way I would expect it because the nameing with S01E17-20 / S01E17-E20 leads to only one entry in the episode guide which is not wanted. Each entry should be visible for it's one. And in the best case each separate entry would jump to the right timestamp.

grafik.thumb.png.871fcc36b900ebdbd471913c9e5fdf8c.png

I think it would be better if it is displayed at least separated (down below is the listing when the files are splitted):

grafik.thumb.png.1af07f7c166f02f344c5550876922a90.png

feature requests:

1) the separation of titles should be configurable e.g. | instead of , only.

2) And also the text for the episodes should be not in one large block...otherwise it's hard to distinguish...

3) timestamps to jump directly to the correct episodes should be possible.

so it is a way...but I think the manual splitting is in the end more comfortable and enjoyable because of the mentioned downsides (only one picture for 4 episodes / separation of title not so easy to distinguish / text also not easy to distinguish / and the biggest issue would be that only the first episode of the combined file can be started directly - the others not / the already watched counter is also not correct possible )

In my specific use-case, I will stick with MKVToolNix because it is really pretty easy to split the episodes. And I have to use it anyway because I have to merge the audio languages DE/EN and subtitles, too.

If the item contains chapters that are correct for this then this is already there.  Otherwise, I have no idea how we'd know where these time points are.

For what you want, splitting them is the best course of action.

if I open  *.mkv files with chapters with VLC, I can jump directly to the chapters. in this pictures you can see 9 chapters. Works pretty fine.

grafik.png.6d40e9c24f3e1901ab519614a6017eab.png

if I put the exact same file in the emby library...

it get's one picture (01_Forever_Young)...the other ones are other files.

grafik.thumb.png.191dd43a40ca94cfc42ff44ab7c521d2.png

if I play the file "01_Forever_Young" (mkv-file) it is not possible to jump to the existing chapters...

Why is that? Am I doing something wrong? Or does this functionality not exist in emby?

If you go to the detail screen of that item (click on it in that image) you should get chapters on that screen.

Assuming video preview thumbnail extraction is enabled.

and last but not least:

grafik.thumb.png.ab2e86490b74e9fd85b43d873b4a6cd2.png

is it possible to jump to the next chapter? because currently there are only the symbols for 10sec back and forward but how can I jump to the next or previous chapter from this menu? is this configurable?

Currently no there is no chapter option in the OSD (not positive if applies to all clients), in the next release 4.7 you will have a OSD menu option to show chapters.

Emby auto generated chapters no, but files with chapter files yes in mkvtoolnix chapter editor.

the proof for the re-naming of the chapters via MKVToolNix works pretty well:

the result within Emby Web-Client:

grafik.thumb.png.801d0fa3d027b6b072cf6b603ac4ef0f.png

the re-naming via MKVToolNix:

grafik.thumb.png.a255490132d4a5dc9ca73e635d360e1e.png

and finally save the new chapter names with <Strg-S>

grafik.thumb.png.cc7d9e1845db0367a39c9cfdf2fcfb66.png

Thanks for the two hints:
1) emby does support chapter thumbnails when the video thumbnails are set for the library
2) renaming of the chapters is possible via MKVToolNix "chapter-editor" no need for multiplexing...just saving.

does this mean for the Web-Client or/and for the Fire-TV Client, too?

Hi.  The Fire TV app already has in playback access to chapters.

Thanks for the hint! Maybe I was confused...when pressing the down button on the remote, I see this:IMG_20210921_195857__01.thumb.jpg.2977d1d254b2bba1b3bf095fb9c934ca.jpg

and I thought that the chapter jumping would be realized with this kind of buttons grafik.png.b4882a35586e045b39e024819c8c6a6a.png

but now I realize there are two possible ways. Either pressing this button: grafik.png.eee956f0de6c58289850853a37c19db7.png

or when the movie is playing just press the up button and the chapters are listed with thumbnail previews.IMG_20210921_195905__01.thumb.jpg.b454d1fcd810600cf88d4eb2d1c23805.jpg

but what is this button for?

grafik.png.3df5574076932bcb3d9dd4b2fa9f3bd0.png

I just get a kind of EPG with no data. I see no real sense of it while playing movie files.

Also I do miss these kind of standard buttons grafik.png.b4882a35586e045b39e024819c8c6a6a.png in the menu when pressing the button just down on the remote....although there is a very nice chapter selection available when pressing the button up on the remote.

Well that is the controversy of that button does it mean next chapter or next item?  From a Series stand point that button takes you to the next item.

Hi.  Do you have live TV setup but with no guide data?

yes, currently this is the case. I just started playing with LiveTV around a couple of weeks but didn't get to manage the epg stuff in time. it wasn't that important for me at the moment. but anyway...why is this function here? is it for fast switching from watching a movie I already have in the library to LiveTV?

Yes or maybe you see an ad (if you're watching a recording) for a show coming up and you want to quickly set it up to record.
