I have the Emby app installed on my Shield which plays my local files easily, including my 4K files with HD audio as I direct stream. I have installed a remote server using my cloud provider to stream my media. Because it is a new server, whenever I choose it, the "trial" warning comes up so I would have to unlock / purchase. My question simply is this: Using the app as it is (trial), when I play a 4K file, it automatically transcodes (stats for nerds shows this as well as saying maximum bitrate has been exceeded). If I unlock this app, will it then direct play as with my local files? Does purchasing the app "unlock" this feature or is this a true network limitation? I do run a Plex server similarly and it direct plays flawlessly. Kev

I am starting to add 4K UHD (w/ or w/out HDR) titles to my library as I own a few 4K HDR TVs, tablets, & phones. However, the majority of my streaming devices are still max. 1080p or less. When attempting to playback my 4K titles, my 720p 32" TCL RokuTVs initiate playback (green progress bar on device completes and playback shows in my server Dashboard) and then show a blank screen: no picture, no sound. I can fast-forward and rewind and the video thumbnails appear to function normally. My server hardware is fairly robust and appears to be transcoding video from h.265/HEVC to h.264/AVC and audio from 5.1 AAC to 5.1 AC3 as expected. I've tested this with both Emby and Emby Beta apps on the TV. HEVC 60p playback was disabled by default, but frame rate of movie is 24p, like all my titles, so I can't see that mattering as non-UHD movies play without issue. I was researching this in the forums extensively this morning and found what may or may not be a related issue on the Fire Stick/TV. https://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/74677-hevc-10-bit-playback-on-firestick-too-many-errors/page-3?hl=%2Btranscoding+%2B1080&do=findComment&comment=792447 I checked my logs (attached) and found that the transcoder was not stepping down the resolution of the video stream from 2160 to 720. I then went and tested other videos and found that video stream with a resolution of 720p or less played fine, but anything 1080p or greater experienced the exact issue described above, to include 1080p videos encoded w/ h.264/AVC video and 5.1 AC3 audio streams that show as "Direct Playing" on the Dashboard while the device screen remains blank. Any thoughts? Emby transcode 20191007-1052.txt Emby Server 20191007-1049.txt

Ive got three GPUs in my server; an intel hd 3000, ati radeon 5570, and a gtx 680. The hd3000 doesnt show up in emby, so I'm not sure if it actually does anything which is no problem, but I'm curious to see which devices are doing what in real time. Is there a way to tell which device is transcoding (and if possible which device is doing the decoding / which is doing the encoding?) A command line option would suffice, but i have half a mind to put this as a feature request for "stats for nerds" if its possible Also, there is the possibility that the CPU is doing the transcoding, would that show up as "mode: Transcode (software)" or something like that?

I have Emby (current beta) on a Linux server playing on an nvidia shield TV. There are some high bitrate films ripped from my blurays that stutter. I have installed the nvideo 7.2.3+ firmware (their eng release #4 it says) and this makes no odds. I did wait to get this installed before asking this, but it made no difference and I see no settings I need to make in the firmware settings. If I click through the "playback problems" option then it transcodes both video and audio at a high enough rate so as to look fine with no stuttering but the HD audio gets transcoded to DD. Is there any feasible way to leave the audio alone in these case? Specific films that have given me problems recently are Baraka and Samsara - both of which appear to be encoded at about 40Mbp/sec; For reference: Baraka: Video Title1080p VC1 CodecVC1 Codec tagWVC1 ProfileAdvanced Level3 Resolution1920x1080 Aspect ratio16:9 AnamorphicNo InterlacedNo Framerate23.976 Bitrate38,167 kbps Pixel formatyuv420p Ref frames1 Samsara: Video Title1080p H264 CodecH264 AVCYes ProfileHigh Level41 Resolution1920x1080 Aspect ratio16:9 AnamorphicNo InterlacedNo Framerate23.976 Bitrate41,052 kbps Bit depth8 bit Pixel formatyuv420p Ref frames1 NAL4 Edit: I am certain the underlying issue is on the nvidia as plex gives exactly the same stuttering on direct playback

Hi All I got my hands on a very good condition HP micro server. I am planning to user Windows server 2019 on it as i am confident administering that. I know the micro-server CPU is very dated and will struggle to do the basic trans-coding., So heres my question, Can i stick a graphics card to tell emby to use that for trans-code? also, budget is tight, so what would be the cheapest graphics card i get away with 4k. most likely to be an eBay job there wont be more than 2 stream ever. thanks in advance

The Nvidia Shield should be able to direct play this audio, but it is forcing a transcode due to "unsupported audio". For reference, the same file direct plays using Plex. Server version 4.1.0.16 beta, Emby Android TV version 1.6.98g. Please let me know if any other info is required here. server-log.txt shield-unsupported audio.txt

So excited to have finally got my HDHomerun Connect Quattro for UK Free to Air TV installed and running with Emby Server v4.0.2. Its all working sort of... I'm on 1gb home network and via Emby Client in browser I play Live TV and stutters badly. I have it set to Auto to ensure streaming best could be, however... As you can see from above, the dashboard is show Emby is transcoding the Live TV footage from MPEG2 to H.264 and I cant seem to find a way to stop it doing and just use Direct Play. Any ideas / help appreciated ?

Hi, all! I want to set up Emby on my QNAP NAS where I keep my media files. Currently it's running Plex without a hitch, but I just want to replace it with Emby because of the integration with TVHeadEnd. The reason for that is I want to turn my Roku Ultra into my "de-facto HTPC" (sort of). I got it all working, but have one problem: Emby insists on transcoding everything coming from TVHeadEnd from its source MPEG2 format to H.264. The problem with that that my QNAP doesn't have that much horsepower to begin with and thus starts to suffer from the extra transcoding effort. Since both the Roku and the TV support MPEG2 (a.k.a. H.262), keeping the stream in this format shouldn't be an issue, right? Perhaps this is something that TVHeadEnd configuration can be tweaked for? (i.e. spit out an MKV instead of a TS stream?) Perhaps at the Emby (server or Roku app) level? I doubt something can be tweaked at the Roku level... Unfortunately, I'm drawing somewhat of a blank here and need help from someone with more experience on the topic...perhaps someone has solved this before? Thanks!

I suggest that emby server look for the full library and create a log (txt) of the files that do not work in my main render (crhomecst 2gen) and need transcoding. ej movies \ movie3.mp4 video_not_Suported movies \ heman.mp4 subtitle_not_Suported etc etc

True HD Transcodes to Dolby Digital on Emby for Nvidia Shield
YouCanPass posted a topic in Android TV / Fire TV
Just installed the Emby server today to give it a whirl and see if I can move away from Plex. One issue that i am experiencing is when i attempt to play a movie (Bluray backup) in the Emby app on the Nvidia Sheild that contains a True HD soundtrack, it always transcodes to DD. Dolby HD Master passes through to my audio reciever just fine. I did download the Kodi app from the playstore and install the Emby addon so Kodi could connect to my Emby server and the same move with the True HD soundtrack will pass through with no problems. I did notice that in the audio settings for the Emby app, there is an option to pass through HD Master audio, but no option to pass through True HD. The version of the server and app that I am using is whatever version is being hosted on the server and playstore as of 2/16/2019 so i should have the most current versions, no? The server version is the free version and the Emby app is a trial as i want to make sure that everything works before i spend any money. I really like what I see so far, but as Plex is able to pass through both high definition formats with no problem, I really don't want to go backwards by moving to Emby. Hope you can help. Thanks much- 1 reply

Hello everyone, I installed Emby Server (3.5.3.0) on my DS3617 and installed the app on both iPhone and AndroidTV. When I use my phone or TV to play video files in H.264 format (I am at home, LAN connection, video files are about 5GB), the video will not be transcoded by emby server, drag the playback progress during playback. The article is very sensitive and there is no such thing as a Caton. But when I use the phone or AndroidTV to play the HEVC/H.265 format video file (1.6GB), the file is forced to be transcoded by the emby server. At this time, I drag the playback progress bar to buffer for a while (because The server is transcoding the video file, and my DS3617 CPU usage is almost 100%. When I try to use the Kodi app on AndroidTV to play video files in the HEVC/H.265 format at Emby server, it can be played directly. Can we not transcode when playing video files in HEVC/H.265 format by setting some options? Thank you for your answers.

Hi, I have a Minix NEO U9-H media player hub for Android connected to a Panasonic TV. I have installed Emby on the Minix device. The Emby App is great. My videos are in the m2ts format from a Sony Handycam. The Exoplayer transcodes these m2ts files which the video becomes shaky and jerky when viewing. I presume Exoplayer does not support direct play (of m2ts files) hence the need for transcode? Question: 1) Can you recommend any tweaks I can try to improve the quality of the transcode? 2) Will Exoplayer support direct play of m2ts files in the future? 3) Is there an android media player that supports m2ts directly and doesn't transcode? Thanks in Advance Regards Shane

Hey everybody, I keep my music in FLAC and ALAC (.m4a) files. All devices in my house (a mixture of iOS/Android apps, web clients, Roku) are able to play the FLAC files directly and the same goes for ALAC; except when I use Safari as the web client for some reason. This happens using Safari on MacOS and iOS. It would be odd if Apple's own browser didn't support Apple's own audio formats. I did a search to see if I could find a list of audio formats supported by Safari, but I found nothing. So is this simply a limitation of Safari? Thanks!

Right now, every time I use Live Tv to watch something, it shows it is transcoding on the dashboard, but no indication if this is being done in hardware or not. Any way to tell easily?

Hi there, I'm new to Emby, switching over from Plex, and I run in a little problem. 1. As soon as I try to play a file with embedded ass / ssa subtitles, either on the web app or on my shield, it triggers a transcode. 2. Ok, assuming that the format isn't supported a transcode is ok, but why isn't the hw engine used? My CPU consuming runs up to 100% and this shouldn't occur while using hw transcode. (I checked the hw transcoding engine to VA API and added the emby user to the video group.) 3. As i tried to swich the audio language, from english to japanese, on this file on my shield it endures a lot of time to swich over and then something strange happend. When i paused the stream the video goes in paus mode, the japanese audio stream goes on hold but suddenly i can hear the english audio stream without a picture. The only way to stop it was to kill the emby app on the shield and to kill the server on my synology cause it still runs at 100% CPU. 4. Is it possible to preset the wished audio and subtitle stream on the shield app? So, sry, if i screwed it up but i am little bit confused now. Oh, by the way, if I started this topic in the wrong subforum feel free to relocate. Thx.

Hi all, I don't know if it's related to the server or the Win10 Theater (client), but when streaming in-house I typically start with direct (no transcode). I can change to a transcoded rate. a slight delay, then the stream resumes using the new (reduced) bitrate. The second time I change bitrate on the same show, it seems to hang (not resuming). The colored waiting circle keeps spinning. Sometimes I can click the back arrow (up, left) to go back, and then click play again. Sometimes, it really hangs, and I need to re-start the Theater client (waiting circle keeps spinning). Transcoding is not HW accelerated on the server. any ideas why this happens, and how to solve? /Jennice

I'm running - Ubuntu 16.04.5 - Emby Server Version 3.5.2.0 - Dual Xeons X5660 @ 2.80GHz - 96 GB RAM The first user I created and the one I tied to Emby premier (if that matters), can transcode a 4k 30 FPS, video no problem. If I switch users in the same browser session, same tab (Chrome or Firefox) the video plays at 12-17 fps. I've done a side by side comparison of the users with the working user and everything is the same - I even tried the "user can manage server" setting. I'm at a loss as to why this is happening. Can anyone help me out here? What more info is needed?

Hello, I just wanted to know where can I enable the throttling for the transcode of video or just of audio, or both of them, as it is pretty annoying to have audio transcoding working although it uses low CPU power always running when maybe the user watchs half of a film or TV serie and then he comes back at the next hour and the whole video has to transcode again. I came from Plex and on their config they have something called buffer for the transcoder which normally I have it to 60 sec, video and audio, so that once it transcodes 60 sec more than where the user is, it just stops transcoding. Can this be achieved with Emby? Kind regards, Pedro

Hi, can I set higher bitrate for transcoding? currently all media was transcode in 800kbps, and my broadband upload can reach 20Mbps (2MByte/s,tested). as the reason for transcode now is : media bitrate exceeded bitrate limit I can only find maximum bitrate limit setting, but can't find minimum bitrate settings. (docker latest stable image+iOS client) BR.

Client reporting freezing and stutter's even with full transcode
ButtoxDany posted a topic in General/Windows
One of the remote users on my server has been reporting freezing and stuttering quite often despite waiting for the transcode to reach 100%. It has happen across several different movies. It will play fine for some time but after 10-30 minutes the movie will freeze and it will never stutter and freeze from that point on. The movie is always 100% transcoded before playback begins and both of our speeds are quite sufficient for streaming and we experience no problems on any other sites. Were mainly using the web interface and google chrome for the remote user to play movies but have tried using embycon for kodi and experienced the same problem but much worse (froze every 2 minutes). I've tried enabling and disabling hardware acceleration as well as limiting the bitrate. In the past we've had success using 1080p 5mbps and waiting 30-45 minutes before playback. Now with the same settings were experiencing way more problems. Not quite sure what more i can try.- 63 replies
