Hi Guys. I'm hoping to buy a NAS to house all my media. The only issue is that I'm still new to storage, so I've been trying to research. I've narrowed it down to Synology and QNAP as those seem to have a direct package to download and setup. Which of the two brands do you recommend? Which model would be the best? I don't want something that breaks the bank. I've been looking at the QNAP TS-451, and haven't been able to pin down one for synology. Thanks

Hello all, I am about to transfer all my media to a dedicated QNAP NAS and run Emby Server on that as well. I currently run my EMBY Server on my windows machine. I am just wondering how I would go about ensuring that all the watched, partially watched episodes etc are copied and displayed correctly in the QNAP NAS? Is it as simple as copying my entire Television folder onto the NAS, and therefore all the watched etc flags are there? Or do I have to do something special? Basically I am wanting to transfer or Migrate all my media and the server functionality to the NAS, but want all history retained. Is that possible? Cheers Mark Sorry guys I just found this, I am guessing it is still relevant? https://github.com/MediaBrowser/Wiki/wiki/Backup

I'm running Emby server with two NAS devices. The older one, a Buffalo linkstation NAS is no longer sharing anything but media titles and some metadata with Emby. The videos won't play and none of the graphics are visible. The NAS is working fine - I can stream videos from it using other media browsers, but Emby just can't see anything regardless of what device I try to stream on. Does anybody have any idea what's going on or how I might fix it?

Hey everyone, I'm looking for some advice on the best approach to building a setup for my parents. I'd like to keep it as simple as possible so that it's very straightforward for them, and also so I'm not getting troubleshooting phone calls every time they want to watch something. Here's what I was thinking: - Emby server running on a NAS - Emby client on Roku - all video is max 1080p with x264 codec - FLAC audio? AAC? AC3? I'd like to have the best quality audio while keeping transcoding to a minimum (or none if possible) so they'll need a format that the client can decode without issue. I know Roku can support these but not sure about multi-channel support. They don't currently have an AVR, only a soundbar but it does have rear satellites so multi-channel would be good. - external blu-ray hooked up to my Dad's laptop with DVDFab as the all-in-one ripper/converter. I think a makemkv/handbrake setup might be a bit too complex for him. It's been awhile since I've used DVDFab so I don't know if it's the best choice here or if there is a better all-in-one alternative. He's on Windows 10. I'm going to help them get the initial library set up, but after that I'd like it so my Dad can just pop a new blu-ray into his external reader, rip/convert it with a preset I've set for him, copy it to the NAS/server, go downstairs and turn on the client, and then watch without any tinkering or fiddling in between. So based on what I listed above, do you guys think this will work? Any suggested changes I should make to the set up? Better server solutions? Better client? Once again simplicity is key. Thanks for taking the time to read my post. Any advice is much appreciated.

Dear all, Let me introduce my context and then ask you what can be done with Emby: 1) My context: Kodi (17.4 Krypton with Misfit Mod AM Smooth Build) installed on: Windows10 Desktop, FireTV Stick, H96 Android tv dongle Synology NAS currently empty (no multimedia content). I have installed Emby. 2) What I would like to do: When updating the current Kodi Build I am using, when removing the current Build and uploading a new Build, when adding new addons on the Kodi installed on my desktop, then I would like to have all other devices updated at the same time. Let me know if I can do this with Emby. What would be the best tutorial/video that would guide me through the steps to have this setup? Many thanks for your feedback. OCdR.

Synology NAS (DS415+) does not hibernate after installing Emby Server
budha300 posted a topic in Synology
Dear Community Experts, I am a newbie and I like Emby a lot. I have Synology DS415+. Since installing Emby, Synology unit is messed up with hibernation - basically, the unit wakes every 30min / 1hr when there is no need for it. When I uninstall Emby, NAS goes into hibernation very nicely. It does look like the Emby server in NAS is impacting hibernation. I tried to adjust 'scheduled tasks' even to once/week (e.g., media indexing, media scan, etc), however this does not. I would be grateful if experts in the community have solution to fix this issue. Thanks so much. -
Hi, First things first I am using emby server on a windows 10 machine and media is played through 2 Roku's via WiFi and PlayStation 4 & Xbox One via Ethernet. I use a discrete modem and router setup in my network. I store my media on 2 WD Cloud NAS that are connected via Ethernet & I store media on the server PC. I cannot play any media on any device through emby. The server is accessible from all of the above mentioned devices. When I try to play media from the Roku for example the loading screen comes up the progress bar moves about a quarter of the way and just freezes. I can play all of the media using other programs but in emby its just frozen. I have recently changed from a modem/router setup to 2 discrete devices, and so began the problem. I made sure after the switch that the 2 NAS devices retained their original IP addresses, as to make sure that the server looks at the same addresses. Both of the NAS in the network present this same problem. I don't get any error messages whilst using the server. I attached some of the past log events when the server failed to play media. Thank you very much for any help. emby log 1.txt emby log 2.txt emby log 3.txt

NAS Folder Permissions for Saving Metadata in Media Folders?
gochiefs88842 posted a topic in General/Windows
Long-ish question, *hopefully* easy answer: I recently upgraded from several external hard drives to a QNAP NAS. After testing the QNAP Emby app server performance, I preferred the old Windows-based server overall and thus the new QNAP is purely operating as the NAS, not the server (hence this forum). That being said... Similar to a question I had awhile back here, after changing my library media folders to the new NAS folders, I am again having difficulty saving metadata into local media folders (rather than in a generic "metadata" folder in the server files). When I add new content, the metadata is successfully being saved somewhere else (unknown location, log attached, tried to refresh "The Accountant" movie metadata). Not only do I instead want the metadata saved in the media folders, but wherever it's actually being saved is seemingly eating up scarce storage on my OS/server hard drive (small SSD). According to QNAP, I have enabled permissions for 'everyone' (see attached Capture #1) for my media content. Windows, however, is much more challenging as to confirming these network folder permissions. Unlike when using my external hard drives and simply assigning 'everyone' full R/W permissions through Windows Explorer and then applying these changes, Windows won't let me change these same settings for the QNAP folders, apparently giving full deference to QNAP's security settings and not allowing me to make any changes within Windows; I have navigated everywhere in the Windows folder permission settings and any changes I try simply won't stick, instead reverting to QNAP's overriding "special permissions" (see Capture #2). How do I get metadata to save directly in the media folders of the NAS? Thanks in advance for any input! server-63624863086.txt -

Recommend an Emby only server that is good with transcoding
skurvy_pirate posted a topic in Hardware
Right now I have Emby running on a NAS which was perfect for me at the beginning. It has plenty of storage and is always on. The downside is that it can only transcode 1 stream reliably, so if multiple people are watching remotely it can't keep up. I am looking for a box that will just be running the Emby server and has enough CPU to do multiple transcode streams (probably will use an SSD for transcode cache). I will still use the NAS for storage. I don't need any video card or anything along those lines (unless it is more cost effective to get one and utilize it for encoding, but I think a good processor is probably cheaper). I would like to keep the cost down as well. I have looked at some of the higher end NUC's, but the ones with better CPU's get pretty spendy because they are more targeted for gaming and have nice GPUs as well. Anyone have some good recommendations?- 5 replies

Hi All, The other day i noticed that my Emby server stopped playing movies through Kodi (TV Shows were playing fine). I assumed it was something to do with the plugin, so reinstalled it etc but had same issues. I then noticed that Emby wasn't importing new movies I add to my movie folder on my NAS (Emby watches this folder for new content). To try and get around this I deleted the movies folder from my emby library (kept the files on the NAS) and went to reconnect it back into Emby but now it won't let me select it. I've attached some screen shots and my log to give you an idea of what's happening, but as you can see I can't add the movies folder, this happens whether I go through the mounted drive (in my case drive V) or through the network path (\\NAS\etc...). I've had no issues adding TV content to my library (the TV folder and this sits in the same parent folder (Video) as movies) i.e. \\NAS \video \movies (cannot set this up) \tvshows (this works fine) Not sure what's going on so any help is appreciated! Thanks, Tim Log.txt

Hi, Is there a NAS specification/recommendation for running Emby somewhere? I've had Emby running on my main PC and then on a stick PC and they've worked fine for years, but each config has had it's own issue with the way I want to locate and watch my media. I've decided to get a dedicated media NAS that I will keep near my TV (& Roku) and run Emby on, but I can't find any sort of specification or recommendation on what sort of processor, memory, models I should (or should not) consider for my purchase to ensure good performance of a server located on it. Going though the forums each NAS app type obviously has it's own issues (as you'd expect) but there must be some set ups out there that are good? Can anyone please share their NAS spec & experience so I (we) can get some idea which brands/models worth (or not) looking at? The last thing I want to do is fork out a load of cash and find I've bought something which cannot host the server well. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. SMc (Lifetime supporter)

New Setup Help: NAS within Ubuntu server vs independent NAS; Docker vs VMs
teiva posted a topic in Linux
I'm as green as you can be for a linux user but eager to learn. I'm also a general newbie regarding setting up media servers. I just upgraded my PC so I can finally start a home server setup. Requirements: +TV live streaming (ota) +Local/remote media streaming +..possible web hosting in the far future Hardware +AMD Phenom II x4 955 +...other leftover pieces I'm trying to weigh the advantages and disadvantages.... Should I use my Ubuntu server as a NAS with something like SAMBA or should I just grab my buddies QNAP NAS? Is there something better than SAMBA? What setups/apps should I be considering for backing up my drives on my NAS? My sense from reading is there's a preference for dockers over VMs since you can share OS resources. Assuming I'm using my Ubuntu server as a NAS...What would my docker setup look like? Would I have a separate container for NAS, emby server and web hosting. Which container would I keep apps like Sonarr? I'm still confused how all these pieces fit together let alone listing out everything I need. Any kind of information would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance. -
Hi All, After being a long time user of emby/MB I am after a bit of advise please. I want to buy one of the standalone NAS devices for my parents to stream to their Samsung tv, which is the best of the brands please? Asusto, QNAP or Synlogy? Also do they have enough grunt to steam to a Samsung device, as I am unsure how much transcoding is required for that app. The only other things the server will be doing is DLNA music streaming and photo sharing. I personally run an i5 server to a Kodi HTPC so never have any problems with these things. Thank you.

Help Needed - Emby Server cant find media folders on NAS
JestersDance posted a topic in General/Windows
Hi All, Just needing a bit of help and not sure where to look. I recently did a reformat and reloaded emby server (version 3.0.5882.0) but when I go to add media locations server cant find my NAS. The NAS is working fine, ive got mapped drives to my PC etc. When I try to input the path location of these mapped drives or even the drive directly emby just resets the screen to a blank form and continues to ask me to input an address. I am at a loss as to what to do. To add to this, I really know flip all about a lot of this stuff so am not sure where to dig a little deeper to find the problem. oh, and prior to my reformat is was all working fine! Any help would be very greatly appreciated. happy to post log files etc.. if someone can tell me where to get them! (thats how unskilled i am!) -
I have a readynas nv+ with all my video files on it (approx 4gb), and have just brought myself a QNAP TS-415+. I have started to transfer the files across using rsync, but this is really slow. Could I take the hard drive from the readynas, place it in a hard drive enclosure/caddy, connect it to the QNAP USB port, and transfer that way? Would it be quicker?
-
It's time for me to upgrading my old server (readynas nv+) to something that can run emby and has more power. I've seen this one, and was wondering what you guys think of it: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B015CDDIMQ/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_S_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=3SBFIH4LPV5YW&coliid=I1TRVCOBXKN3IZ&psc=1 I have a couple questions about it, before I buy it. 1. Is it powerful enough to transcode 2 HD video files? 2. It will also be used for downloading as well, so would need to be able to handle downloading, files moving, as well as transcoding. 3. I have some windows programs I would like to install on it. It say it can run multiple Windows, Linux, UNIX and Android based virtual machines with the Virtualization Station. Would I be able to boot up the server directly into the virtualization station & would I see any serious performance losses by running emby and and a couple of small programs in this way. 3. Is there any other server you would recommend over this. Don't really want to go above the price of this server I want to make sure I get the right server for what I need, so I don't find myself having to upgrade it again in a few years. Thanks for any info/help you can give

Hi, I have NAS-ZyXel NSA310, which runs independent from firmware linux subsystem based on uClibc. Some sysinfo: It is headless device, so it doesn't has nor X Windows, neither browser. But seems like emby server, each time started, emmits error about trying to open start wizard in browser. This seems have some influence to another error, which is displayed continiously only in terminal window: Is there a way to disable this behaviour? I mean autoopen browser with startwizard page, when emby service starts?. Attaching output from terminal window, because emby logs doesn't contain error about bad hardware address length. Cannot add a media library from UNC shares that point to a NAS
alfman posted a topic in General/Windows
I'm configuring Emby (Version 3.0.5641.4) and cannot add a media library from UNC shares that point to a NAS. On my Windows 8.1 NUC, I have UNC shares that point to folders on a Synology NAS. I have the UNC shares set up according to the Emby How to Make UNC Folder Shares article. In the Add media folder dialog, I can navigate to my UNC shares (see screenshot). However, when I select a particular UNC share (e.g., NAS_MUSIC) and click OK, I'm incorrectly taken to the main Emby logon screen. I tested adding a test media library from a folder local to my NUC and that worked successfully. For comparison, I use these same UNC shares for media libraries on my Plex server successfully (Plex running on the same NUC as the Emby server). So I believe they are configured correctly. Clicking on NAS_MUSIC takes me back to the logon screen: -
I just installed the latest Ubuntu 15.04 Emby Server install (using Ubuntu 15.04 files from 05/30/2015). I selected the default user 'emby' during the installation. Emby Server is running successfully. I added a media location (see screenshot) using a mounted NAS folder apparently without any error messages. However, it's not pulling up any movies. Looking at the permissions on the mounted NAS folder, they appear correct (see screenshot): Group: emby Access: Read & Write Am I missing some other permissions? Thanks.

Hi, I've got a weird one here and I wondered if anyone had encountered a similar issue. All of my media is stored on my NAS. These are mapped as follows in the server dashboard. \\NAS01\Music \\NAS01\Films \\NAS01\TV Shows I access these with a user that has read write pemissions on my NAS server for these locations and all is well. MB classic is happily seeing and playing all my media I also have a \\NAS01\Private\ImagesByName folder. The same user has full permssions for this folder structre as well. Using the advanced page in the Dashboard, for ImagesByName I enter :- \\NAS01\Private\ but the dashboard reports the address doesn't exist I have tried the following -: \\NAS01\Private\ \\NAS01\Private\ImagesByName I've mapped a drive and have tried Z:\ Z:\Private\ImagesByName I can access this location using the correct user from within Windows explorer but the server is refusing to "see it" even though it can see the NAS as evidenced by the media play back. I really don't want my IBM folder on my local drive because it should be with teh rest of my media and of course my HTPC has a relatively small system drive and no other drive at all. Anyone got any ideas?
