Using internal Emby tuner, every channel is transcoding instead of direct play...
kmanus posted a topic in Live TV
Now that Channel mapping is supported in the internal live TV implementation, I made the switch today from NextPVR. I use QAM for cable so NextPVR was my only option prior to the most recent update. NextPVR always transcoded when I used it, so I always ended up putting the direct stream address from the HDhomerun prime into my player software (MPC-HC) to avoid transcoding. Not the most glamorous solution but my streams remained direct. To my surprise, Emby's internal implementation is also transcoding live TV streams. Bandwidth is not an issue. Is there a setting somewhere where I can set to prefer direct play?- 5 replies

Playback issues when changing res&bitrate under direct play, no transcoding
jayw654 posted a topic in General/Windows
When playing a movie in some browsers (mainly Chrome) if res/bitrate menu is pulled up and the account is set to absolutely no transcoding the movie will stall or crash if the bitrate/resolution is changed. Initially it will show "Direct Play" but once change "Direct Play option disappears. The next picture will show that "Direct Play" disappears once it has initially changed to anothe Bitrate/Res. Granted sometime depending on browser you are able select a bitrate/res higher then the file and it will go back to "Direct Play" but lots of times it will just crash until transcoding is turn on and changed during playback. Proposed solution: Simply add an option under "Users>Profiles" called "Direct Play Only" which will disable the menu to change bitrate/res and should disable/ grey out the following option under "User/Profile" when enabled: 1. Media Playback > "Allow Audio Playback that Requires Transcoding" and "Allow Video Playback that Requires Transcoding" 2. Sync > Allow Syncing that Requires Transcoding for the log the log that has the issue is 7/12/2016 URL: https://fileserver.jpwservices.net Username: emby Password: 12345- 4 replies

When trying to direct play I get a failure notification and it proceeds to play the file noting that is via HTTP. This also checks the switch for play via HTTP instead of SMB in the emby addon settings. However when I check on the Emby server it notes that the file is direct playing. Is there a way to check which playback method is actually being used?

Can't direct play trailers with supported video and audio format
booch posted a topic in Apple iOS / macOS
Hi! Today l bought an iOS app mostly due to trailers feature but I faced a problem - all my downloaded trailers plays with transcoding only due to missed "Direct" option in the settings while playing trailer (see attached screenshots) I made simple experiment: 1. Saved movie with supported video and audio format, Emby server see it 2. On iPad I can select it, choose "Direct" option in playback settings and play it without transcoding 3. Create a copy of this file, add "-trailer" at the end of the name to make Emby treat it as movie trailer 4. On iPad's app "Trailer" button appears, I can play it but can't select "Direct" option for direct play Is it possible to play offline trailers on iOS devices without transcoding? Thanks in advance- 11 replies

Evening all, I'm basically looking for an answer to the title - Direct play XviD and transcode DivX. Possible? It seems I'm only allowed to specify "mpeg4" in the DLNA profiles so my server has to unnecessarily transcode Xvid videos. If this isn't possible, could I request that this be something to consider in a future release? I'm running version 3.0.5821.0 on Windows. Thanks very much!

I am a bit confused about how Emby works with iOS and playing within the Emby app on an iPad. From this page: https://github.com/MediaBrowser/Wiki/wiki/iOS The first sentence, to me, implies that I can play any format of video on my iPad. But then we get to direct play, which states Can someone explain this to me? If only .mp4, .mov, and .m4v are supported for iPad, is Emby transcoding even useful for iOS? Am I missing some setting somewhere or something that would let me play other formats in the Emby app on my iPad? I was recommended Emby from a friend and neither of us knew I'd have to reformat half my library just to play on the iPad.

I install server on Win10, name is MEDIASERVER - local IP 192.168.1.13. My test library have UNC path - \\Mediaserver\w\HDMovies2. On other machines install Kodi 16 and latest emby plugin. On machine where is Win10 OS (not server, IP 192.168.1.2) Direct Play working OK, but on Ubuntu not working at all - raise error on initial scan. "Kodi can't locate file W:\HDMovies2\..." (yes/no) - if hit yes, library is visible in Kodi but not working, if hit no - no library at all. My password.xml is same on both machines (Win10 and Ubuntu) (same user, and same password). I test smb share form Ubuntu machine and working ok - create source smb://MEDIASERVER/W/ and I can browse folders and play movies from HDMovies2 folder. I play with path substitution and no luck What I can do more (or where I mistake) to enable Direct Play with Ubuntu?

Hi there, Don't know if you are already aware of this bug, but I just realized that Emby for Kodi 1.1.62 announces a wrong data content for the onNotification python method (http://mirrors.xbmc.org/docs/python-docs/stable/xbmc.html#Monitor-onNotification). When starting a playback via the Emby WebUI on Kodi, it gives something like {"item":{"title":"Tenth Avenue Freeze‐Out","type":"movie"},"player":{"playerid":1,"speed":1}} for the "data" field, although a song is being played. "movie" is clearly wrong here. IDK if this comes from Emby, the addon, or Kodi itself, I could provide more information if required.

Hi All. I've recently transitioned my Emby Server from my Windows box to a Docker within UnRaid 6.1.6 on a Dell T20 Xeon e3-1225v3. The Server is running Version 3.0.5781.5 I'm trying to direct play from my main system running Windows 7 x64 Chrome 47.0.2526.80, but every video I've tried has transcoded instead of direct playing. Some are due to bitrate (I'd be interested in how to adjust this limit), but most are reporting back the following in the server log: 2015-12-09 09:03:53.9325 Info App: Profile: Unknown Profile, Path: \\Galaxy\TV Shows\The League\Season 1\The League - S01E01 - The Draft.mkv, isEligibleForDirectPlay: True, isEligibleForDirectStream: True 2015-12-09 09:03:53.9325 Info App: Profile: Unknown Profile, No direct play profiles found for Path: \\Galaxy\TV Shows\The League\Season 1\The League - S01E01 - The Draft.mkv (server-63585219811.txt, transcode-05c5fd09-a231-4e3a-ad55-83d6fc9b7231.txt) The League S01E01 Video CodecH264 ProfileHigh Level31 Resolution1280x720 Aspect ratio16:9 AnamorphicNo InterlacedNo Framerate23.97602 Bitrate5287 kbps Bit depth8 bit Pixel formatyuv420p Ref frames5 CABACNo Audio Languageeng CodecDCA ProfileDTS Layout5.1 Channels6 ch Bitrate1500 kbps Sample rate48000 khz DefaultYes transcode-05c5fd09-a231-4e3a-ad55-83d6fc9b7231.txt server-63585219811.txt

Currently running Emby Version 3.0.5675.1 on my Windows 8.1 machine, and the Emby for Kodi addon version 1.1.17 on my Amazon Fire TV within my home network. I also like to access my library remotely to stream via my mobile devices. When trying to play from my Video Library while within my network, I receive the message that I am unable to direct play, and whether I want to stream via HTTP or HTTPS. I believe my issue has to do with my path substitution being set up incorrectly. I have my share permissions set up correctly for NFS, but think my syntax is wrong in my Emby Server for path substitution. For example, my current path substitution is set up like: From To "G:\TV" "nfs://192.168.0.10/G/TV/" "H:\Kid Movies" "nfs://192.168.0.10/H/Kid Movies/" It's my understanding that NFS does not require a username/password to access the Windows shares, versus if I were using SMB I would need to configure the setting within the Emby for Kodi add-on with the credentials. The above are a couple of examples, for which I thought were working correctly up until a few days ago when Emby for Kodi or my Emby Server were updated (I was out of town and something auto-updated). Now I receive the HTTP message and 'Warning: Unable to direct play'. I'd like to direct play my library from within my network, while still accessing media outside of my LAN. My examples above include the quotation marks because I am not aware of how Emby will process paths that contain spaces, so that's how I originally entered them. With borrowing from my above examples, what would be the official syntax to use for my NFS shares? For those paths that contain spaces, do I use quotes? Am I able to use the IP Address, or is Emby looking for the server name? For those paths that DO NOT contain 'spaces', would I use: Option A) nfs://192.168.0.10/TV Option B ) nfs://192.168.0.10/TV/ Option C) nfs://ServerName/TV Option D) nfs://ServerName/TV/ Option E) None of the Above (please provide a better suggestion) For those paths that DO contain 'spaces', would I use: Option A) nfs://192.168.0.10/Kid Movies Option B ) nfs://192.168.0.10/Kid Movies/ Option C) "nfs://192.168.0.10/Kid Movies" Option D) "nfs://192.168.0.10/Kid Movies/" Option E) nfs://ServerName/Kid Movies Option F) nfs://ServerName/Kid Movies/ Option G) "nfs://ServerName/Kid Movies" Option H) "nfs://ServerName/Kid Movies/" Option FML) None of the Above (please provide a better suggestion) Lots of play above with IP Address vs Server Name, quotes vs no quotes, slashes vs no slashes.... As you can see, just a little lost looking for some help. Thanks

Hi All Just recently upgraded to the new version of Emby. I am experiencing problems when direct playing to the XB1. All I get is a black screen with some churping in the background. This is only xbox 1 that has the issue. Website play is fine. and no issues playing the file directly. I'm writing a channel plugin which fetches links to HLS streams from external source. What is the right way to tell MBS that this an HLS stream when creating ChannelMediaInfo object? My goal is to avoid transcoding HLS streams when playing on devices which support HLS. I have tried this: new ChannelMediaInfo{ Path = "http://example.com/hls_streams/test.m3u8", Container = "mpegts", AudioCodec = "aac", VideoCodec = "h264", Protocol = MediaProtocol.Http, SupportsDirectPlay = true } but the stream is still transcoded when trying to play on Android (which supports HLS). I have written similar channel plugin for the Plex and it plays without transcoding on Android, but in Plex I can specify protocol=hls explicitly from plugin.

Hi, Though my MediaBrowser app on Roku is set to 20.0Mbps, any movies with bitrate above 14 get transcoded. Is this the expected behavior? What would be the maximum bitrate supported by Roku direct play? I have browsed the forum but did not find any mention of transcoding due to this scenario. As a test I joined audio streams of the suspect movie files (the ones with higher bitrates) to low video bitrates and they got played directly. Also as a test I extracted the audio streams and left only the high bitrate video streams: movies get transcoded. I am running app version 1.78 and server version 3.0.5490.2. Does anybody confirm this behavior?

Having trouble getting direct play to work with some things. I don't understand why it works sometimes and not others. I have unc paths set in media folders. -though no path substitutions ( I assume not needed if already set as a unc path) I access media browser locally via Chrome using the LAN address. I have access to the folders from client machines as set in the media folders page in media browser's settings pages. As for codecs, I basically just have cccp installed and as far as I'm aware nothing else. Sometimes I have access to play a file directly (but I have to select it every time). Other times it simply does not show the setting for direct play. Is there anything else I should have done / be doing? Any help is appreciated.

I am looking to be able to get live tv to play on my roku but it doesn't seem as though my server can handle the transcode of the live tv to allow me to be able to play any of the tv channels through my roku. However I nice way around this would be to use SiliconDusts new HDHR4 which has hardware transcoding to h.264 and direct playback on dlna devices. Does MB3 and the Roku front end support direct streaming the Live TV stream if I was to purchase one of these? I would really like live tv to work on my Roku. Thanks,

Hi! Over the last few days, I've upgraded to MB3 over MB2 and I bought the MediaBrowser app for my Surface RT (first gen). It works surprisingly well (expect the odd few crashes here and there). I have a question concerning transcoding, direct play and the like. I've tried looking on these forums but hadn't had much luck. What file formats does the app has the ability to play without needing for transcoding? Every file that I play works fine, which is great, but I've noticed my server's i5-2500k @ 4.2 Ghz getting used at 100% (no HW acceleration sucks! ^^) while playing a 1080p recorded WTV file. Since I'm planning on upgrading my desktop to Windows 8.1 and want to use the same app as on my Surface, will it be able to "direct play" the files instead of needing to be transcoded? I don't mind that much on mobile devices, but on a hardwired high-end desktop, I wouldn't expect it to need transcoding to work. It'd be nice to know what circumstances need transcoding and what don't. Do mp4 need transcoding? SD vs HD? etc. Thanks for a great app! Keep up the good work. EDIT: I should add: mp4's and avi's work fine when browsing the network and playing them with the Xbox Video app. WTV's and obviously MKV's don't.
