Using keyboard navagation in desktop/Mobile/tablet modes.

I have had this issues forever, and it's been driving me nuts for years now.

When navigating web app with keyboard (arrow keys, enter, etc)

Sometimes(often) when you use either on these two options to go back to Previous page, emby loose "focus" and I have hit tab on click with mouse in order to navigate again.

alt-left: navigate back
alt-b: navigate back

Why does this happen and is there a fix? It happens in both desktop and Mobile/tablet modes. Tv mode doesn't seem to be affected by this.

Music: Clicking play on artists results in shuffle

Hi,

I finally did the upgrade to 4.9.3.0 the other day and today I noticed when clicking play on an artist with multiple albums, it does a shuffle instead of going through the albums and songs in order. There are a few cases I have in particular where I'd prefer this to be in order vs. randomized/shuffled. Is there a way to change this setting to the 'classic' sort when clicking to play all?

Web App Season Navigation - Remove the "dropdown"

Thought I'd give it time, but nope, hasn't "felt better" with time

No offensive, this was the worse UI decision. It completely invalidates the need for Season Art and introduces significant friction to season navigation.

Coming from someone that works in UI/UX design; standard practice dictates drop-downs almost always are not the appropriate choice.

Two questions:

1. Can we optionally toggle back on the original Series > Season > Episodes, page to page navigation, within our own server? If not, can we prioritise such an option.

2. Even better, can we revert back to the original design pattern, as this more closely follows UX design best practices?

No sound on Horizon TV Web App

Hello, I have a Horizon TV running OperaTV OS. The tv doesn’t support ac3 codec on web browser and because emby is transcoding all audio tracks to ac3 all videos plays without sound. If I play a file with aac audio codec, everything is fine. Is there a way to force transcode to aac instead of ac3 ? Thanks.

Launch full backdrop/now playing OSD when playing a song or playlist

Currently, when I click the shuffle button for a music playlist, music starts to play and a bottom bar shows, as seen in the first screenshot

Is it possible to launch the full backdrop OSD (seen in the second screenshot) when clicking the shuffle button? Or, for that matter, clicking any song, album or artist play button?

Desktop stuck in Tablet/Mobile Display Mode

For over a month, my emby web app has been stuck in Tablet/Mobile Display Mode, changing the setting does nothing. I use Firefox, the problem persists even on a clean firefox install, but the problem does not happen on Microsoft Edge on the same device.
On my laptop, also running Firefox, the Display Mode is set to Desktop, but can't be changed either (maybe it's just automatic or server-side?).
According to my browser the User-Agent is reported correctly as Firefox/Windows, there aren't any cookies on the site so I can't try editing those either.
Overall I have no idea what it could be any more.

Firefox takes 5 to 10 minutes to start playing and is jittery

I noticed over Christmas that a DVD rip of Muppet Christmas Carol took literal minutes to start playback and then the pan over the houses at the beginning was jittery.

Now my wife noticed she sees the same thing in a Chosen Bluray rip. Well, the playing delay.

Firefox takes anywhere from a few minutes to what feels like an eternity to start playing.

So I tried many things with that Muppet rip. ChatGPT had ideas about the file possibly having garbage in it or because it's PAL, wrong color coding and so forth. Nothing helped. In the end, I tried Brave and all issues were gone.

I have two kubuntu machines on which the issue was noticed and one Windows 10. So it would have to be an inherent issue with the Firefox engine, I think.

Anyone know what this might be? Can it be fixed or is it time to give up on Firefox entirely?

Default version selection 720p MP4 vs 1080p WEBM

I have two versions of each movie that are capable of direct play in Firefox: a 720p MP4 (H264/AAC) and a 1080p WEBM (VP9/Opus). The 720p version is always displayed as default, even on screens that are capable of 1080p or better. Is this the expected behavior?

It's not really a big deal, but I was under the impression that Emby picks the best fully compatible option for the player as the default. It would be nice if it did that in this case.

Disabling previous and next system media controls keys

On more than one occasion, I didn't remember I had an Emby window open in Chrome alongside the Spotify desktop app on my Mac. Pressing the media control keys shouldn't skip back and forth between TV show episodes, also not remembering my view position when I try to undo the damage by navigating to the correct episode.

No major streaming service has this default behaviour, not even a YouTube playlist, and that is for a good reason.

For audio-only playback this is a perfectly good feature as-is, though and play/pause is perfectly fine as it isn't destructive.

Items disappear after coming back from player

The file is being played. In case I wait until it ends, I got redirected back and nothing is displayed, until I scroll the page:

This is on Firefox 148.0.2 (64-bit), Ubuntu 24.04LTS.

Support for Duo / 2 Factor Authentication

Hello! I work at a school that uses Emby to host movies for classes, and we are currently getting set up with Cisco Duo's 2 Factor Authentication system. I am admittedly not very adept at this sort of thing, so I just wanted to ask a question that our Duo representative asked me -

"Now, if you can contact Emby support and ask if they support Radius, Ldap, Saml, Oidc we will be able to add Duo MFA without the need of Duo Network Gateway"

Any sort of guidance here would be helpful! I've looked into other threads regarding this topic, and while it seems setting up LDAP is possible, I wasn't sure if these other auth methods were necessary too.

Error with videos containing delayed audio in web app

I did not find another thread related to this issue. If one exists, I apologize. I put this thread in the Web App client section as that is the only platform I was able to test and confirm this issue on.

It seems Emby has a hard time dealing with files containing audio tracks with a positive delay on some platforms.

I noticed that a few specific movies I encoded and made available on Emby would fail to play. It would load 1 or 2 seconds, show the buffering spinning wheel animation, load another second, show the spinning wheel again and finally exit the video with a "Playback Error No compatible streams are currently available." error. When seeking a few minutes into the movies, the video would play fine from that point on. It is also possible for Emby to manage to power through if the delay is small enough(3 seconds at most in my case).

When I investigated all the impacted files, I noticed that all of them had a delay on the audio track. So to test this theory, I created a silence file the length of the delay(6001ms in this case) and merged it with the regular movie audio track.

This is the flow I used to create the padded audio file(I used ChatGPT for help with these commands. I don't know if there is a better set of parameters to do this, but these worked):

Extract all the files from the MKV(I used gMKVExtractGUI).
Create a silence file with the command
ffmpeg -f lavfi -t 6.001 -i anullsrc=channel_layout=5.1:sample_rate=48000 -c:a ac3 -b:a 640k silence.ac3
Create a file list.txt containing the following:

file 'silence.ac3'
file 'audio.ac3'

Concatenate the silence and movie audio files with the command
ffmpeg -f concat -safe 0 -i list.txt -c copy padded.ac3
Mux the video file, padded.ac3, subtitles and chapters into a new mkv with MKVToolNix.

With this, the audio delay shown in MediaInfo was 0ms and the audio remained in sync with the movie and can be played fine on the Emby web app.

I don't know if there's a better way to remove the delay while keeping the audio in sync with the video. This is the one way I managed to achieve it to "correct" the issue on Emby.

I attached two 30 seconds sample files, although the issue is seen within the first 5 seconds:
Test_WithDelayAudio.mkv - This video contains the delayed audio of 6001ms. This fails to play initially in the Emby web app.
Test_WithPaddedAudio.mkv - This video contains the padded audio instead of the delayed one. This plays fine.

I also tested having the two audio files in the same mkv and indeed, when selecting the track with the delay, the issue happens whereas it doesn't when selecting the track with the padding.

As for the logs, Emby seems to create 3 transcode logs when attempting to play the test file with the delayed audio.

I'm running Emby Server 4.9.3.0 on Debian and I'm playing the files through the web app on Windows 10 on both Firefox and Chrome.

Intermittent "No Compatible Streams..." Error (STRM files)

I'm posting this in the "web app" section, but it happens in every version of Emby I use (iOS, Samsung TV, Fire Stick).

"No compatible streams are currently available. Please try again later or contact your system administrator for details."

Content that plays fine in my IPTV provider's native app frequently throws this playback error when I try to open the STRM in Emby. Sometimes the URLs will work in VLC, but have the same playback error occur in Emby. I've played with every setting I can think of, but it is really hard to diagnose, as it seems to happen intermittently. I'm not seeing the failure recorded in my log at all.

If anyone can point me in the right direction toward a likely cause...

After installing a new GPU, direct play is broken on Web App.

Basically as the title says. after installing a new GPU to improve trans-coding, the web app wont work properly with direct play on both video AND audio. it will work if you start an episode or movie from the beginning, however it takes like 30 seconds to load, and if you scrub at all, the video freezes, but audio continues, And resuming a video gives you a black screen and audio, you HAVE to watch from the beginning. If either video or audio trans-codes, doesn't matter witch, then it just works perfectly fine, but if its ALL direct play, wont work properly.

Iphone11 Chrome: PDF Rendering Blurry Issue & My approach to solving the problem

When I view PDFs in the Chrome browser on iOS devices (iPhone/iPad) via Emby, the PDFs appear blurry. I experimented with some crude methods and managed to display them clearly. I hope to share this with the community in the hope of contributing to the improvement of the official implementation. This method uses PDF.js to manually render the PDF to the Canvas, employing precise scaling and DPR adaptation to bypass the shortcomings of the native renderer. Here is the JavaScript part:

Emby Version 4.9.3 - Where are webhooks?

Hello! i was looking through the UI trying to setup some webhooks for my server and i noticed that the plugin is installed, but the webhooks plugin never loads.

Just making sure i am not missing anything here. The plugin is definitely installed and i see it. But nothing in the sidebar.

Attached my logs for good measure. I have restarted my server multiple times btw and uninstalled and reinstalled the plugin multiple times.

Playback music via QR code

I wonder if it is possible to playback music via QR code on a certain device.

My goal is to playback a certain album on my AVR in the living room via scanning a QR code.

The QR code would contain the web link to the server with the album and the target device , like e.g.

Can't login to new device

Hi, Lovin' Emby. But have an odd one today. I am setting up a new firestick and I can't get to the Emby Connect page to authenticate with PIN. Next I tried going to app.emby.media on my tablet and I never get to the login screen.

But if I go to app.emby.media on my desktop PC - it goes right in and loads up my homepage.

What am I doing wrong?

Massive amount of artefacts in dark scenes

Hi everyone

After I learned that Firefox needs to be strangled with barbed wire, I switched to Brave for my viewing pleasures.

Now I noticed while watching The Blacklist that dark scenes or shadows are heavily artifacted, as if one was watching 144p.

I watched the file, over the network, in VLC and there seemed to be no artifacting. I tried to replace the file with one from the web, no difference. I then tried it in Firefox but that damn thing won't even let me skip ahead to another point in the video anymore, it's that bad.

I had a look at the logs. There is no transcode logfile. Is this just the nature of the beast? The moment you watch in a webbrowser, quality goes down the crapper?

I just updated to 4.9.3 after uploading the log file, just to be sure it wasn't that... I wanna say it looks a bit better now but I think that's my bias and not actually true.

How to Revert stupid season layout change in emby???

so recently im not exactly sure when but within the past week or two i think, but emby updated and changed the season layout for tv shows, you used to click a series and it showed title cards for each season . now you click on a series and it has a stupid dropdown bar and removes the title cards for seasons and i cannot access specials/season 0 any more on some series due to this, idk why it was forcibly changed and not made an optional choice is beyond me but i hate it and i want the old version back is there any way to do so?

Randomised music always play the same tracks

A few months ago, I imported my music into Emby, and I like to take all my tracks and play them randomly. However, I've noticed that every time I start a new session, it's always the same tracks that get played. Sometimes not in the exact same order, but always the same ones (same artists, same tracks). Is there a limitation somewhere that only randomises up to a maximum of X artists, which could explain this problem?

When using other things like Navidrome and its web interface, I don't experience this behaviour at all.

It's a large music library of about 1TB.

Shuffle not very random after upgrade to 4.9.1.80

After upgrading my Emby server to 4.9.1.80 (from 4.8.11.0), I've noticed the shuffle feature is not as random as it was in the past.

For example:
I have a large music collection and often enjoy hearing good variety of songs. So I navigate to Music -> Songs and then select Shuffle. In the past a playlist would generated with songs from across my collection. However, since upgrading it appears to only select songs from the "top" of the Songs list. So without filtering or sorting I only get songs with titles starting a number through "H". However, if I sort by title in reverse alphabetical order and select Shuffle, the playlist only contains songs with titles starting with "Z" and "Y".

Is this feature degradation expected?
