Exciting Additions Coming Soon in Emby Server 3.6

Luke

Hi Team,

As many of you know, we are currently working hard on getting Emby Server 3.6 released. We would like to take this opportunity to give you some advance information on some of the changes that are coming.

New Levels of Performance
Emby Server, as well as all Emby apps will perform faster than ever. The server can now easily scale to massive libraries, and the faster speed and reduced loading times will probably be the first thing you'll notice after upgrading to 3.6.

Live TV Guide Data Now Included with Premiere
Emby will be gradually switching from Schedules Direct to Gracenote for Live TV guide data. What does this mean? This means if you're in the USA, Canada or UK, you'll no longer need to setup an account with another website nor pay someone else for this data. You'll simply enter your zip code into Emby, select your channel lineup, and we'll handle retrieving your guide data.

We believe this will provide a better experience for Emby users with fewer setup steps. The data from Gracenote is also quite a bit richer, and we will be looking at how we can take advantage of that to bring new Live TV features to Emby. Going forward, Live TV will require Emby Premiere in the web app, where previously this was not the case.

How to Migrate From Schedules Direct

If you are setting up the server fresh, then you should use our new Emby guide provider, which will be the default. If you are already using Schedules Direct, then you can continue to use it through the remainder of your Schedules Direct subscription. Schedules Direct has pledged to continue to honor your subscriptions, and we thank them for that.

New and Improved Hardware Acceleration
We have revamped hardware acceleration on all supported platforms for Emby Server. This includes Windows, Linux, Android, NAS devices, and MacOS. We've added some sophisticated hardware detection that allows us to know exactly what your hardware supports, and with this information we can fine tune the transcoding processes to get the most out of your hardware.

This has truly been a massive effort and will continue to be a massive effort going forward into the future. For this reason, hardware acceleration will now require Emby Premiere on most platforms. On some platforms such as Nvidia Shield and certain NAS devices, it will be included freely out of the box.

A Long List of Improvements and Bug Fixes
Stay tuned for the announcement of Emby Server 3.6. It is packed with new features, bug fixes, improvements to existing features, and more.

I am looking forward to it. Seems this next stable version is going to be a pretty huge upgrade just based on how long it has been since the last stable.

Keep up the great work.

Nice work. Luke, any chance of adding Australia and New Zealand support to Live TV data since it appears to be supported by Gracenote?

Thanks!

Ok, but if not?? How about like.. Sweden and other countries supported by SD?

Nice, GN does a much better job listing channels for border communities than tvguide. But I hope we'll still be able to pull from multiple sources.

Yay!

Hoping for:

  • Renumbering of LIVE TV channels in the EPG as stupid homerun can't do it and the default channel numbering for Freeview DVB-T/T2 is awful in UK
  • Channel Up and down buttons to work like real tv and direct dial number of channels (may be this is in LG App code?)
  • Live TV not to transcode H264/MPEG4 content in LG App (it natively handles MPEG2 and MPGE4)
  • Better handling of Series Link and conflict on recordings
  • Collections for Television in menu option (like Movies currently has)
  • FOLDERS option in the menu to take note of the config setting and not show it if unticked (it currently ignores!)
  • Ability to hide menu options for  "Upcoming, Trailers, Collections, Suggestions" if any required to be hidden.
  • Menu options MUCH larger font size and also category section headings in the home-screen for LG/Samsung (Horizontal layout).
  • Drop down menu options added for default view for GENRES in Movies and Television (This exists as you can currently set 'Suggestions')
  • Crossfade config option in seconds for Music (if possible but this may also be client side code?)

Super happy if the above could be done :) There are others but they are client fixes or plugin fixes.

Will other countries (like Australia) eventually be added to the guide data?

I appreciate everything that Emby is but I'm wondering how the programming guide information/cost is going to be recouped.

Is it going to be "Tivoized" into a monthly service?

I am kind of on the fence about further commitment to the platform and if that is what is coming I would just as soon go with what my cable provider is offering.

No disrespect intended.  I appreciate everything you have created and improve upon.

Why is Emby dropping Schedules Direct?

They aren't closing and I'd rather support an organization such as them rather than Gracenote, a company that took an open contributed database built from the work of a community and said it was a "licencing error" when they closed cddb and removed open access.

You're supporting Gracenote either way because that's where SD gets their data from. This will allow us to have a built-in option to reduce user setup requirements and make us more competitive with other software.

How about European TV providers? Will they be available through Gracenote? If not, will use of Schedules Direct remain an option?

I didn't know that as I thought SD bought from Tribune Media and Gracenote is owned by the Nelson company.

Your statement of "Schedules Direct has pledged to continue to honor your subscriptions, and we thank them for that." made me worried that they were shutting down as the grammar used implies that it was a forced disconnect that could have resulted in a hard failure of access.

So if SD isn't shutting down, and Emby had to be honored to receive continued service from SD, what caused the breach between you? When I was checking the SD site I noticed that Emby is no longer listed.

Nothing else will change besides what was announced. Thanks !

This is such a major release with so many improvements and feature additions - why make it just a small point release, shouldn't it be a big jump to the 4.x versioning?

Based on the current beta, it is pretty big for LiveTV mostly but it really isn't a jump to the next version numbering.

I really do hope 3.6 has resume features of some sort in music libraries.

No it shouldn't be 4.0 as people just took lifetime premiere on cyber Monday. Thanks!
