Android TV Updated with common home screen layout and improved playback

A new version of the Fire TV and Android TV apps is rolling out to a device near you now. This new version has several improvements so be sure to update as soon as it is available for your device.

Common Home Screen Layout

The app now follows the same home screen layout as the web, mobile and Theater apps. Each user can define the order of and what appears in each home screen section and these settings will carry across all of these apps. You can access these settings from any of the supported apps (including this one).

Playback Improvements

The internal Google player used by the app has been updated and improved to provide an even better playback experience and require even less transcoding on the server than before. For stereo setups, the app can now downmix internally so it doesn't have to ask the server to transcode or remux to do this conversion - freeing up your server resources for other tasks.

Stats For Nerds

The popular "stats for nerds" feature is now available in this app. To activate it, use the option in the playback OSD settings menu or long-press the "select" button on your remote. You can also turn it off in the same manner. Display of stats for nerds will be remembered for an entire login session.

Improved Seeking Behavior

It is now much easier to seek further into content quickly. By holding down the seek buttons on your remote, the app will progressively seek faster and faster - allowing you to jump hours ahead if necessary much quicker and easier than before

New Season View

The app now has an improved TV Season view that matches the other apps and provides easier access to information for each of the episodes within the season.

Other Fixes and Enhancements

  • Refresh rate switching will now do a better job of matching rates that are "close"
  • Organize settings into logical sections
  • Include photos and photo albums in search results
  • Update language translations (thanks for community contributions!)
  • Shuffle play entire libraries - you can now use the play button on your remote to shuffle play at the library level
  • Include TV channels in search results
  • Stability improvements

Thank you.  This is a great update!  One thing though I have noticed with this update is that Live TV seems to start a little slower now.  It's not terrible, but it's definitely a couple of more seconds to tune into a channel now.

I was pleasently surprised. I'm so glad I switched over from PLEX. Well done!

Very Nice! More organised settings, stability and view customisation is much appreciated.  :)

With the previous version I was seeing the very occassional stutter on high bit rate video. A simple restart of the app would resolve the issue though.

Again it might just be me but generally find Android a bit sluggish in comparison to Apple and Windows.

However as with the latest Emby theater update for windows; I find this update feels more responsive when navigating and 'snappier' with screen load times than the previous one.

I don't use many of Emby's ever expanding feature set. It's used by the household to watch movies and TV series pretty much exclusively, and I don't always agree with some of the aesthetics at times. That said; Emby has been for a while now; a very professional and clean looking media server.  I am always impressed by the way emby evolves.

Cheers :)

Firstly:

Feature Request!

Include custom images for each category in the slide out or at the top. This is preferred by me but maybe not all so maybe make it a personal choice?

Secondly:

What does this mean?

What is the recommended frame rate in the general settings for the AndroidTV Device (this case a ShieldTV)?

It seems that I'm not getting refresh rate switching at all and it will stick on whatever it is set at in the general settings. PLEX has a setting for this in the app settings. Did I miss it in the Emby App Settings?

Thanks.

@Sammy:  try putting the picture you want into the root folder of your library.  call it folder.jpg

I have one of them in each of my Tv/Movies/Kids Tv/Kids Movies library folders and Emby picked them up automatically.

Hi, and hello to everybody, I migrate from Plex a week ago. My main server is over Windows 10 and my main client are nVidia Shield on 4K environment (TV & Receiver)

I found some little details that maybe help to improve the app on Shield. Today i going to do a hard reset to my nVidia Shield to see if it is something there bugging Emby and start reporting.

I like to be part of the beta program, let me know how do that (Sorry I'm a newbie here and the forum is huge to find all answers).

For the moment I have no problems watching my movie collection (around 2000) 90% 1080p and 4K releases.

I consider myself a high end user, looking for quality and practical software like Emby.

At the time I'm very happy with my choice. After use Plex for almost 3 years plenty of bugs all the time, finally i feel peace and i enjoy my content.

My best regards, you all!
