Introducing Emby for Samsung Tizen Smart TV's

Installation

Users in the USA with a 2015 Samsung Tizen Smart TV can install now from the Samsung App Store.

If you have a 2016 model or are not in the USA, stay tuned for additional announcements.

A Modern App for Modern Times

The interface for this app has been built with HTML, but this is nothing like the web apps you're accustomed to. This has been built purely with modern features that bring a level of performance that wasn't even possible a year ago at this time. For the nerds out there, that means WebAnimations, WebComponents, Service Workers, Polymer, and on and on.

Rediscover your Content with Recommendations

A popular feature from other Emby apps is finally making it's way to Emby Theater.

New Music Interface

The app finally has a design that makes sense for music.

Details Gone Vertical

A common complaint over the detail screen of the current Emby Theater is that it's pretty but slow to navigate. We went back to the drawing board and decided to take a little inspiration from Android TV. It is now much, much faster to browse through detail screens.

Just installed, app was veeeery slow after initial install, restarted the TV, app is responding good. Tried to play a few movies, first one played well (and smooth!!), but some screen jumping at movie start. Then tried to play 2 different movies with embedded subs, Screen goes Black, nothing is happening. Have to exit back and get out of the app to recover..

I tried Win 10 "cast to device" and that is working perfectly, so the TV can handle it no problem..

I am remuxing the movies that crash the app (take subs out) and see if that helps.. All movies are MP4 (x264 with AAC audio)

Also, for most of us, we connect the TV local, can we default to that, rather than emby connect?

I will report back shortly on removing the subs

Removing embedded subs does not help, I also tried remixing audio down to AAC 480, does not work also.. I try to spend more time this weekend to figure out why some movies work and some do not..

The latest version is 1.0.8. We have a 1.0.11 update which has already been approved but they haven't released it yet. Probably Monday morning I would guess. See if the update helps. Thanks.

I've downloaded the app as well. I have been unable to get anything to play. On the dashboard it lists the content as transcoding, but on the TV it is just a black screen?

I have been able to play some MKV's connecting through EMBY connected through "Sources" so I know the tv is capable of handling those files.

Any settings I may have to change for the file to play direct and not transcode through the app?

Also, Live TV does not play anything (Screen goes black) and the Guide does not load properly, it shows a vertical line of channel icons in the center of the screen..

A few more comments, my Samsung remote (with the build in accelerometer to allow cursor movement just my moving the remote) behaves really poor. Point at a movie and wild scrolling occurs. With direction keys it is all OK.

When first installing and select the local server, I can not use the point and click part of the remote. The on screen keyboard comes up to type the server name and as soon as I point at the on screen keyboard, the text box looses focus and I can not select anything on the keyboard.. All is fine with the direction keys.

I tried several things except for recoding the video stream. I do note that the files that do not play are all reporting to be encoded with main or high profile set at 4.0. Those at main or High profile 4.1 or even 5.1 play fine. I only looked at 8 files, (4 that would play and 4 that do not), but it maybe an indication

When you get the 1.0.11 update the guide will be hidden for now. It will need to be reworked to accommodate the more primitive tizen rendering engine.

The 1.0.11 update is now available. Enjoy.

Got the 1.0.11 update after loading the previous one that black screened. Still black screened and got terribly slow. So I reset SmartHub in Menu Setting of TV and reloaded the app. Got the infamous Samsung "unable to download error 502". Pulled the TV plug for about 5 min. Turned off the DLNA server that never worked with the TV anyway. Powered up TV. Downloaded Emby again. Eureka !!!! Works beautiful now. Yeah, Yeah, I mixed two fixes. But the long awaited works. Thank you Luke.

I will have to try that.  I bought a new Samsung TV (UN65JU6700) and I installed Emby 1.0.11 and nothing plays, just a black screen.  I will report back after I try your suggestion.

Does the Tizen app not support H.265? Any HEVC content I try playing back seems to crash out the app, It just sits at a black screen until I force exit the app. I see it go to transcoding on the dashboard, but I don't see any transcode activity on the server, my proc remains untouched. I'm very interested in Emby, but a substantial portion of my library is HEVC and without support for it on Tizen I can't make the switch.

Hi Guys,

Any update when this will be available in other countries, particularly Aus?

Link to comment

Why only USA?   Increasingly dissapointed I chose lifetime support of emby over plex - the latter already having fully functional app for tizen TVs in multiple regions...

Hmm, Changed the region of my TV and was able to download the Emby App but it behaved poorly:

1. Everything is VEERY SLOOW (takes 30-40 seconds to populate just the first page of TV episode thumbnails. Scrolling requires again 10-20 seconds for thumbnails to load....

2. No videos play (black screen as mentioned by other posters without resolution)

Pressing back/return button does nothing. Clicking OK pops up blue spinning wheel for 1/2 second and then returns to black. Have to go to SmartHub to get out of emby (return does nothing)

Any suggestions for making this somewhat functional?

Thanks!
