More Improvements for the Android TV/Fire TV App

The latest version of the Android TV and Fire TV Apps include several improvements centered around audio playback and stability. The highlights are:

  • Framework Updates - The Android TV framework elements have been updated to incorporate bug-fixes from Google that should improve stability when moving around the interface quickly.
  • Video Player Improvements
    • Android TV:
      • Bitstreaming of DD and DTS in most instances (some older hardware configurations involving things like optical connections still are not completely worked out)
      • Faster playback startup and seeking when direct playing
      • Better player stability

      [*]Fire TV:

      • Bitstreaming of DD in most instances
      • Option to transcode DTS to DD to get full 5.1 surround for those items as well. The transcoding will only have to convert the audio if everything else about the item is direct stream-able.

[*]Better Transcoding - We have changed the transcoding format to one that will allow for a much lighter load on the server when transcoding is necessary. It will allow more stream copy so that, if transcoding needs to be done only for audio, that is all that will transcode. It also will eliminate the odd issue of the video sometimes jumping back to some previous point right at the end. [*]Improved Connection Worflow - This will hopefully solve issues a few people have seen when trying to connect remotely. [*]Easier Server Switching - The ability to switch servers is now included from the user login screen. [*]Ability to delete media - If enabled for the current user you can now delete episodes, movies and videos just like you already can with recorded TV. [*]Ability to Forget Servers - The ability to "forget" a remembered server from your list if it is no longer valid. This requires a context menu at this point so it is only available if you have that ability with your remote. On the Fire it is the menu button. On a Google device, the menu is produced by the "Y" controller button so you'd need a controller or a remote that can map that. [*]Improved Image Handling - Images should load faster and no longer exhibit the issue of showing a previous image as you scroll quickly through the interface. [*]Various Fixes and Improvements - Many other small improvements and fixes.

Coming soon to a device near you. Get it in the Amazon or Google stores.

Great Job!  This update is fantastic.

I'm getting 5.1 surround from my older Fire TV box connected to TV with HDMI.  I have an optical cable from the TV to the sound system.

Loving the direction of Emby, would be absolutely awesome if you could add support for the sync function on Android TV and not just Android, for us with terrible DSL connections that don't support streaming of any reliable quality. Cheers

Ever since this update (or the most recent server update...can't tell which) I've run into some problems.  1) There are some files that no longer display the video (I can hear audio).  2) Almost everything is transcoding when it used to be direct.  Thoughts?

Also second the bitstream DTS-HD and TrueHD.  I hate having to switch to Kodi when watching in my home theater.
