Introducing Emby Theater for Xbox One!

Windows Universal support for Xbox One might not be here just yet, but that doesn't mean you can't enjoy Emby on your favorite game console while you wait.

Emby Premiere subscribers are invited to try Emby Theater for Xbox One. Just open the Microsoft Edge browser and launch tv.emby.media. You can even turn it into an app by adding it to your home screen!

Supports Xbox One Game Pad Input

Easily control the app thanks to native support for your Xbox One game pad. The D-Pad works just like any other remote, with no mouse cursor needed.

Supports AC-3 Pass-through to Your Receiver

This app will preserve your original AC-3 audio as-is.

Enjoy the Full Emby Experience

The app supports many popular Emby features, including Movies, TV, Music, Live TV, Photos, and more on the way.

Rediscover your Content with Recommendations

A popular feature from other Emby apps is finally making it's way to Emby Theater.

New Music Interface

The app finally has a design that makes sense for music.

Live TV

Watch Live TV, browse the guide, and manage your recordings.

Details Gone Vertical

A common complaint over the detail screen of the old Emby Theater is that it's pretty but slow to navigate. We went back to the drawing board and decided to take a little inspiration from Android TV. It is now much, much faster to browse through detail screens.

If You Can Do HTML and CSS, You can Build Themes for Emby Theater

Many of you have probably worked with HTML, JavaScript and CSS. Building skins and plugins is as simple as forking existing samples on Github and creating your own versions. We're excited to see what you come up with. We'll have more info on this coming soon.

Love this app!

*Update - I did notice on the Xbox One, when you back out of a movie, and go back into it...it starts from the beginning and not where you left off.  Just an FYI.

This looks pretty cool.  Can you help me understand how the traffic flow works though?  Does all of my video watching get routed through the internet even though my server and XB1 are in the same location?

It's a static web app. Everything runs locally on the device.

Not an Emby issue, but the edge browser doesn't use my full 1080p screen, there's a sizeable black border around. Anyone know a way to fix this?

**Edit** found the setting myself (edge settings > Use my whole screen to show web content).

Looks and sounds great. I can live without the ability to use my Harmony remote for now. Grabbing the game controler is not that big of a deal for the great picture and sound delivered

Thanks Team

So does this play on the device using transcoding or DLNA or DirectPlay?

it's DirectPlay/Direct Stream/ If needed Transcoding as far as I can tell from my limited use of it.

Please don't forget about us PS4 users, too.  The DNLA Emby service is kinda wonky.  Can't wait to have a true PS4 App.

Have you actually seen it say DirectPlay on the Dashboard while playing?  I just tested this out and it sees it as a web browser client so of course transcodes everything I tried.  Same files play via the Media Player app via DLNA directly.

I had some movies that wouldn't play the subtitles through media player, but work fine in Emby Theatre. Love it! Thank you!

This sort of addresses my question of, does it offer more compatibility than the built in media player app? Is it limited in any way or is it more like the full Emby experience?

It's the same as using any other WebBrowser from a playback experience.

If you try this app with the beta server, you'll see less video transcoding now on Xbox One, in addition to the AC3 pass-through that was already there.
