We're pleased to announce Emby Server is now available for NVIDIA Shield.

Please see the Emby website to learn how to download and install Emby Server onto your Shield:

Once installed, the on-screen interface will direct you to the Emby web app to run the server startup wizard.

Great work fellas!

Hope https://emby.media/c...nscode-in-h265/ will be implemented soon.

Good job team! It's an impressive job you're doing!

I currently have emby running on my Synology ds218+ NAS with the nvidia shield tv as a client. Will I gain anything by moving Emby server to the shield?

A lot of factors to consider in that question - the Shield is likely more powerful for transcoding than the nas, but on the other hand the NAS has the disk I/O local and will not be using the network to retrieve it's files (as they are local).  Try it and see - install a new version of Emby (remembering to use a different port for the 2nd instance) and if it's better, then just use the NAS for storage only ..

Interesting!

I've now got a Shield that I'm using more for playback. It's proving to be a good, robust client.

I'm curious now about how the Shield would work as the server? Can a single Shield run as both server and playback client? Or do you need a dedicated Shield to be the server?

you guys are totally going to win this altogether if you add PS4 and the Xbox!

I have found that as long as it is  doing a Guide update when you try and use it as a client it is hard navigating the menus.... What I did was Schedule my guide updates during the night and now it is fine using it as a Server and Client.

After some library updates my Nvidia shield is completely full with embyserver data.... Over 8gb I store my images and nfo files on a has so why is there so much data on the shield? Makes for an instable shield!

I assume it will have similar issues to Plex on Nvidia Shield; limited storage, limited use for transcoding, hard to use as both server and client simultaneously.

The general advices hold here too:

- direct play whenever possible, i.e. avoid transcoding (will also avoid the issues with HDR when transcoding)

- if yo need transcoding, then use a powerful server, e.g. 8th Gen. NUC and enable HW-Transcoding

- don't try to transcode 4K media

my synology is the server so  the nvidia should be the client right ?

I found out that EMBY while it records it also makes a copy of the recording in the temp transcoding  folder … so If you do not move the Temp folder a 16GB Shield will not be enough even with external storage.
