Thanks but the system is still compressing your log output and taking away the information I want to see.  Can I see the media info from the web app detail page for this exact item (You can't make an omelette without breaking a few eggs)?

You know, I'm noticing all my troubles are pretty much stemming from playing anything not in English. A lot of series play fine, but I was trying another earlier. I sent some logs, in the last hour or two...where it would randomly decide to play or not, and everytime it would automatically switch to the English audio track, regardless of what I wanted.  But if I just leave it in English, it'd usually play fine.

Man I really love the Emby UI, and it streams so smoothly outside of home, unlike Plex with it's constant errors. It seemed to play a few things better.

But having just dropped 120$ and having these issues, while it plays fine in Jellyfin and Plex...I just don't know how to feel other than disappointed. I've tried resetting everything to default.

It theoretically shouldn't be a problem but why on earth would something have a STEREO True HD track?  I think the encoding of some of those tracks may be off somehow and that is causing the problem with Exo.

I'm about to update the player again in the beta version of the app.  We'll see if that has any impact on this.

But doesn't Plex use ExoPlayer as well? And I don't know much about Jellyfin except that it's an open source version of Emby with less features due to it;s infancy, but they're pretty close I imagine. Both direct play flawlessly.  I also don't understand what you mean "Why on wrath would something have a Stereo TrueHD Track"

TrueHD is a container used in many releases. It's a direct rip from the Blu-ray source. That's the default container, I didn't take say some other format like Dolby Digital or PCM and encode it as TrueHD...The blu-ray itself had TrueHD on it.  I hope you updating the player does fix it.

It's just life isn't it? I go to Emby cause I'm sick of Plex's constant failing to direct play and the adverts and the annoying login system / needing to always be online and poor streaming over the internet. Go to Emby, a bunch of stuff works fine...and then now everything isn't...and stuff is playing in Plex. I literally can't wrap my head around it. If the NVIDIA Shield Pro (2019) was in stock, I'd almost be willing to buy it just to test all this, but given that Plex...and Jellyfin can direct play it without me fucking with anything, it makes me feel the fault lies with Emby...but then again you said it plays just fine for you. Further confusing the shit out of me. Because I uninstalled everything and set it to default.

Not saying you did anything wrong :) I just don't understand why the publisher would have a TrueHD track that is only stereo - I suppose it would still be superior quality to another compressed format but you just wouldn't usually see that.

Well, Anime typically comes on a blu-ray with like 4-6 episodes. So...lots of space available. They use TrueHD or DTS-HD MA just like any movie for best quality / compatibility. When you buy physical media, often quality is the reason why. So it's frustrating to see Emby transcode stuff like FLAC Audio to AAC @ 192KBps...from a bit-rate of 1.5Mbps

TrueHD and DTS-HD MA wouldn't be best for compatibility...  Many systems wouldn't support those codecs.  That's why I'm a little suprised - however, it is disc-based media so they are thinking hardware players as opposed to streaming devices.

In any case, the latest beta of the app updates the player.  I didn't really see anything in the release notes that I think will impact this but worth a try.  Also really odd that I have no problems on any of my devices...

Yeah, as expected, didn't help.  I can't figure it out...I'm at a loss. I've reset the server. I've reset the Shield App.  As you said...it plays for you. So it's something on my end, something with Emby...but what? Why does Jellyfin and Plex play it right? If they didn't, I'd assume it was my HDMI Cable, Shield, Receiver or something...but no. Feel like there's no way to solve this when you can't reproduce it and almost nothing stands out from my logs.

@11:19 PM , I sent logs after I attempted to play "Akira". A Japanese anime film with a 5.1 TrueHD Audio track(Both Japanese AND English). 10 seconds in...it freezes.  If I switch to English audio, TrueHD 5.1 - it plays infinitely. This was NOT the case when I first started using Emby.  If I switch from English, back to Japanese - it plays again, for 10 seconds, then freezes. I can skip ahead, but after 10 seconds, it will freeze. Unless I use English audio.

Plays fine in Plex.  Total loss for me. This makes no sense. There's no reason. It plays fine for you. It should play fine for me. It plays fine in everything but Emby...but I've reset every option in Emby. It's 100% related to Japanese TrueHD Audio.  Doesn't matter what it's ripped from.

I updated my server to the beta version as well for testing. No improvement.

Big breakthrough here. So I went back to Plex to check out Akira. Same thing. Pausing every 10s with Japanese audio...but not English audio. If it was a bit-rate situation / too slow, then it'd happen with English, which is the same format & size. This was NOT happening previously. But now it happens in both Emby & Plex.

I went to play the episode I used to prove The Ancient Magus Bride was playing in Plex. Black screen...just like Emby.  HOWEVER, I recalled when I did that, I skipped ahead to showcase subtitles and direct play.  Skipping ahead...works. At least for the anime. Akira doesn't, skip ahead or not, every 10 seconds or so, it pauses.  So I went back to Emby...skip ahead in the anime encoded this way. It plays.

So it seems something is happening right as it starts, but ONLY with Japanese audio. The real question is - why is this seemingly becoming a problem when it wasn't previously?

Could be related to this issue.  At least - it is for Akira, but it could lead to the reasoning behind the Japanese tracks. 192KHZ? Hmm.  Clearly it CAN play it, but it just won't unless I skip ahead, or start with English, then Switch. Gonna try updating my shield to the Beta Hotfixes and see if it helps.

You're using a NVIDIA Shield yourself, yes?

My Receiver, the HDMI cable, and the Shield all support it. It's gonna take a few hours for the Hotfix to show up and test.

What model Shield do you have? 2015? 2017? 2019? I know 2015 & 2017 are on a different image than the 2019 models. It could be related.

***************************

Interesting. So I went to my NVIDIA Shield Audio options and set it to let me "manually select" what audio my device supports. Akira plays with the Japanese TrueHD Track just fine now.  No random pauses. No stutters. As I mentioned earlier, the anime series I've been having issue with, will just transcode automatically with "Direct Play error".  I've still not gotten the image for the hotfixes for the Shield to test.

Plex gives the information of "TrueHD not supported by device", if I manually select my audio selections(Including passthrough of TrueHD). Emby just says Directplay error.  It's gotta be the 192KHZ thing.

Finally got the hotfix image. Interesting changes...but it may have made things worse. So now...the file will begin to direct play...but has no audio and constantly stutters. if I skip ahead...it works, audio, everything.  English tracks no longer just work like they used to. It seems both Japanese & English are now on the same playing field.

This is really strange considering the Hotfix was supposed to fix issues relating to what I just described...and instead has GIVEN them to me.  I feel a little better that they're both on equal footing now, but just what the hell.  So it's Shield related absolutely...but maybe nothing I can do until they fix it?

Yeah, I've been trying this and that for hours. I really think this is something only NVIDIA can fix. Yet you say it plays fine for you...? So weird. I mean my Phone literally direct plays them with no transcoding, works fine. Shield is borked. My 99% Fire HD10 Amazon Tablet from 2017, which was outdated then...can direct play it without issue. On my next day off, I am going to format my shield. Annoying because all of the apps I had sideloaded and setup on it, but it's literally the last thing I can think of.

Thanks for all the investigation - very helpful.

One thing to try would be playing with the buffer option in settings - just to see if it has any impact.

Welp. Changing it the buffer size only did two things. Making it shorter did nothing. Making it longer caused it to PLAY fine for 10s(No audio, but this is related to NVIDIA as we've seen), then freeze. I reset my shield as the ultimate test and nothing,..everything is the exact same. HOWEVER, it reset to the Hotfix version. So now I am going to download the original 2017 OS image, and hopefully that'll put it back to the stock 8.0.1 and we'll see from there.

Or well, seems I can't go back to stock. I downloaded the image, but I'm reading the instructions and it's pretty damn technical. Why can't I just put it on a USB drive? lol.

Guess I gotta wait for NVIDIA to fix this one.

Shockingly, NVIDIA Released a hotfix today...and now the files are playing fine. No dropping, skipping. Direct playing without issue.  Didn't expect them to do it right after I posted. Weirdly enough, Akira still isn't playing right though. But that's not on Emby, as that happens in Plex as well still. But normal, non-192KHZ TrueHD tracks appear to be playing fine...for now.

Until for some reason suddenly they decide not to, haha. (Just being pessimistic)
