I'm considering using Emby for my live TV. I have a HDHomerun tuner arrived, just need to sort the cable from my aerial.

How does Emby fare for things like series link in the UK?

live tv works really well for me. I’m a very happy camper now for the last year or so.

Series linking works as well as your epg data, with a hd homerun you should just use the inbuilt functionality and emby epg data. It should be absolutely fine

Yes, as per what Mark has just said, it works really well. I have both HDHR Tuners and IPTV m3u tuners both using emby guide data.

Series recordings work fine although double daily episodes of Emmerdale and Coronation street do not get proper episode numbers.

That's good to hear! Was considering Channels, but that requires a subscription.

I've just tried it with an IPTV URL. Guide populates etc.. however no channels play (they play fine in Plex DVR)

Any idea? I get an error in the log :-

Never mind, I got it running. I have to use YAP with my IPTV provider so had to set it up as a HDHomerun tuner, not m3u playlist.

When I add the actual HDHomerun tuner, can I keep the IPTV & terrestrial channels separate or will they all merge together?

Thanks!

They will stay separate based on the assigned channel numbers. I don’t think you can change the hdhr ones, they are in the 3 digit range starting at 101 I believe. Obviously iptv channel numbers are set by your provider

Or you edit the m3u to add channel numbers >= 1000

Doh.. Just realised that Emby isn't capable of direct streaming MKV to Apple TV 4K - was hoping to ditch Plex!

HDR stuff doesn't work.

Darn!

You could ditch your Apple TV for a Shield.

I've given up on live tv within Emby for several reasons:

  • THe guide data keeps disappearing and takes time to come back after reporting
  • Takes too long to tune to channel, this isn't good for wife acceptance
  • I get different results from fire tv to shield to web app

I am now trying HDHomerun DVR for the time being. The recorded files are available in emby and playback better than the emby generated ones.

not sure why you are having any of these issues, you should investigate. I’ve never had any guide data disappear, takes me a couple of seconds to tune

I agree. I have :

Zero guide issues.

Reasonable tune time of less than 5 secs. Quicker for IPTV than HDHR

Great recordings

Good playback on all clients

Mostly happy wife. When she isnt its usually with me not emby!

I'm a massive emby fan and love it, but the DVR still feels very under-developed.

I have just re-created my guide provider again and it downloaded again. But it had been 3 days without a guide and missed recordings.

I actually feel like it has gone backward sometimes. I do report errors and had reported the live tv guide several times.

I understand the team are working hard, but I need something to just work when I am away (of which 90% of emby does and I never need worry). I have been impressed with the 4K / HDR handling. Combined with a shield it produces great visuals and audio.

Can you keep it configured.

Leys have a look at your logs if/when it fails again.

This is uncommon.

What server version are you running?

That's a pain - I can't change the IPTV numbering or the channels don't work. (I tried using NextPVR)

Unless you are asking because you are hoping to merge local and iptv channels. That’s not possible at all

Why can you not change the numbering? I do and so do others?
