Getting a dedicated Emby server - hardware/OS configuration?

Hi all,

I have Emby server running on my dektop PC. This runs fine over all, even with transcoding of a movie.  I have a couple of kids living with me now and I am concerned that this will not be sufficient to have 3-5 simultaneous movies going, at least all the time.

I've reviewed some of the prior threads and am interested if there are any new considerations, especially with 4k content becoming more available.

My home network is a wired 1Gb ethernet to most areas and a Google mesh network for wireless.  The movies are backed up to Synology NAS, which has 2 bonded 1GB lines.

If I were to build or buy a dedicated PC to run the server, what should I take into account?

1. Video card

2. CPU speed, cores, etc.  Would a true server CPU (Xeon, e.g.) make a difference?

3. RAM

4. OS (Windows home/Pro/server, LInux)

5. Will I be able to transfer the server settings, or will this be a new build???  A new build would be very painful.........

Thanks!

3-5 simultaneous transcodes?  Is that max?  Have you actually run into issues here? If they're living with you then is this just purely LAN access?  If so, I wouldn't even bother upgrading.  I don't know what kind of content you're hosting, but I don't think I've seen a transcode on my local network in probably ever.  Most certainly I wouldn't worry about a GPU for transcoding.  If you're set on upgrading and not going too nuts I have a Dell T20 XEON from years ago I picked up on Amazon for like $400 all in.  I've seen 5 transcodes over WAN without any issue.  GL
