Remote connection issues

Hello,

I am hoping to get some assistance on this, I have purchased 1 month of Emby premiere to try it out but unfortunately cant seem to get it working the way I would like.

Problem: Cant play music from google home devices. I would love to be able to control music through my smart devices with voice commands.

Error message I get on the google devices: "I cant reach your emby server, make sure your server is accessible from outside your network.."

Setup: modem>TP LINK M5 router>unraid server running emby docker. My modem is in bridge mode.

Background:

I believe I have emby connect setup properly, I have linked the server with my google home app ok. I believe the problem is that my ISP is in cgnat configuration which is causing the issue. I have had many conversations with my ISP which is a very small company and one of the techs mentioned that they use carrier-grade NAT. Also I ran a test that I saw in another forum post here which is "tracert 8.8.8.8", and in the cmd line the first two lines are both private IP addresses (192.168.x.x and 10.254.x.x) which would confirm cgnat?

I can connect to my server remotely through zerotier which is great.

Ultimately I just want to be able to play/control my local music with voice commands on smart devices around my home. Is there any way for me to do this under this situation?

Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated!

Thanks

Hi there, so you're saying you can connect with emby apps such as the mobile apps? That's probably the first thing you want to try before moving onto Google home.

I believe this is going to block you from being able to port-forward anything through your router.  @@pir8radio?

Is it a wireless ISP?   if they are NATting then you need to have them open ports and forward them to your IP to allow the connection.  Then you have to open the same ports and forward on your router. It should work through a double nat, but if its a WISP then you probably have some high latency already no?

It is not a wisp, it is cable internet, its just old infrastructure. They did tell me they want to move away from the cgnat but the company is very small and I doubt it will be anytime soon. If I ask them to open ports for me, what exactly should I say, which ports?

depending on their size, it would probably have to be the default emby ports assuming none of their other customers are already using those ports.

ok so ports 8096 and 8920? or do I have to open 1900 and 7359 as well as noted in this post https://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/61815-what-are-embys-linux-server-ports/?

No you only need those other ports open on a local network not through the ISP.

ok thanks. I will contact my isp and see if i can get anywhere with this. I would love to get this straightened out, and hopefully get voice control working on my google devices after this.

Thanks for the help.

ISP tech support was not knowledgeable and not willing to help. unfortunately doesn't look like an option to get them to open ports. I will try again in a bit and go into the office and see if i can talk to one of the other techs.

I would like to get my setup working a little smoother.

Right now i have unraid server with all my content. I have CoreELEC boxes around the house for my televisions as well as smart speakers. I have tried plex, but the plexkodiconnect addon for kodi doesnt seem to work well with music, especially with the playlists. It freezes or just doesnt play when i select a playlist that is on the plex server and when it does play it will randomly stop etc. I havent tried the emby for kodi addon yet so i will give that a go and see if it handles playlists better.

Is the emby for kodi addon popular? how do emby users handle streaming their local music to many different devices? any advice or suggestions is appreciated!

Thanks

Is the emby for kodi addon popular?

Yes it's very popular. It's a syncing addon so that means it will need to periodically download the contents of your Emby library.

You may prefer to start simple with the EmbyCon addon first, and then only switch to Emby for Kodi if it's not feature rich enough for you. EmbyCon is just sign in, browse and play, very simple and easy.
