Which version is for me?

Hi,

I'm new to Emby and new to the whole concept of server, media server et all and would really request you to help me in very simple terms with a few questions of mine.

I happened to bump into both Emby and Plex while browsing some site. Installed both (Emby & Plex servers) on my Windows 10 laptop and was impressed that I could get a really cool view of the media content from my laptop on to my Sony Android TV. Did a bit of reading and found that while Plex was more simple to set up, Emby had way more options.

In the meantime, I got access to a Raspberry Pi 4 and this got me interested as this would give a option that would tie my personal laptop down. Did a bit a read up and now have the following doubts:

a) What is different between Emby and Emby Theater? Are they the same?

B) Which would be suggested way to go ... RaspianPi or DietPi (that comes with Emby Server)?

c) I am not inclined to the Premiere version but am considering the purchase of the "Emby for Android TV" as I live in the Middle East and TV channels WITHOUT a service provider box is NOT possible. Therefore, the Live TV option is of no use to me. Will I miss out on anything else by not getting the Premiere? Will I still get all the cool looks and information on actors and about the movie with just the paid app?

d) Lastly, can I know if it will be possible for me to upload more content on to storage attached to the Pi without removing it from the Pi and connecting it to my laptop? I mean, will be be able to transfer the content directly from my laptop (running windows 10) to the storage attached to the Pi?

Will really appreciate information and all suggestions that help this new journey of mine a pleasure!

:)

a) Emby is collaterally the whole system or company. :)  There is the Emby Server which is what servers up the content to the different clients.  Emby Theater is one type of clients as in "Emby Theater for Windows".  So this is a client designed to run on your computer or network to access your server.  There are many different clients as well as server platforms to run on.  These can all be found here: https://emby.media/download.html

B) This is a person choice.  Speaking for myself only, I prefer to run Emby Server on a real computer with a monitor, mouse and keyboard attached usually running Windows operating system.  It's the best choice for ME, because it's the operating system I prefer and use the most. Windows is a good all around solid choice to run Emby Server on as it's the server used most and is easiest to get help for it by other forum members.  That is not to say other platforms can't be used but since I'm answering this post, you get my BIASED answer.  LOL

c) Emby Premiere has features that are not in the non-premiere version.  You can read a bit about the Premiere Features here: https://emby.media/premiere.html  Premiere is very reasonably priced and even has a monthly version if you wanted to try the features for a month.  But if you don't need any of the features, you would not need the Premiere License.

D) If you setup the Pi attached storage device for normal sharing then you would be able to access it from your network if you are an authorized user.  So with proper setup, yes you would be able to do this more or less like you would copy/move files to any Linux computer.

Let us know if you have any other questions,

Carlo
