Thoughts on next hardware purchase?

I am currently an Emby user on XBox 360. It’s getting dated and want to switch to something else. Here are kind of my requirements to help me get started and not have to convert a thousand movies to another format.

Numero 1: it needs to be able to play WMV content well natively. All my current content is WMV HD content with WMA audio.

Numero 2: Want a wired gigabit connection.

Numero 3: Ideally something that works good with Alexa or can integrate with it. I’m not a Google house so prefer to stay away from Android only stuff.

Numero 4: Ability to work with Home Assistant home automation which may work with Numero 3 for ability to work with Alexa no clue right now.

Numero 5: May be a given from Numero 1, but want to be able to play local content with the device.

Numero 6: As I go to the less important but nice to have items, would like my new Harmony Elite to be able to directly launch things like YouTube or other apps if possible if the client effects that.  Not sure if that is Emby specific but if the device supports it like to have it.  So I can directly launch YouTube from an activity, or Emby if I want to watch movies and not have it launch the media service whatever it is then I have to navigate to Emby.

Any thoughts?

Thanks.

If you can transcode then I'm guessing most devices will still be able to play your files. I know the shield is popular and might be able to use Alexa to play to any running instance of emby possibly even the web app. Gien your requirements would guess either the shield tv or a PC.

I'm going to say the Shield TV.

1: Supports WMV

2: Wired gigabit

3: Has an Alexa skill in the skill store

4: HASS integration would be on the server side through webhooks if HASS has a plugin that supports it

5: not much internal storage but you can plugin an external drive to it, or connect to a network drive through a file manager

6: Since the elite has the hub it will fully support the shield

Based on your requirements an HTPC is the only thing that can get you there.

Will a Harmony Elite control YouTube on an HTPC?

Probably. My harmony remotes are configured to Windows. I can navigate the desktop.
