Emby for Kodi addon - poor photo viewing experience

Hello,

I seem to have difficulties getting a reasonable experience viewing photos through Kodi.

Emby for Kodi 4.1.18

Kodi 18.5 on LibreELEC 9.2.0 (RPi3)

Emby Server is 4.3.0.30 for Windows

I originally used QNAP for our server however since it's specs are fairly garbage, I thought I'd try my PC as the server instead to see if anything changes but it appears not. This is all over LAN.

When I go to Kodi's Pictures section > Addons > Emby and browse to the folder, I am unable to start a slideshow. It spins as if it's loading something, then a bit of time later the screen turns black and sometimes it crashes the Kodi (unresponsive, needs a reboot) other times I am able to back out to the menus.

If you view the log during this it is filled with the following over and over for each (I suspect) image in the folder:

2019-12-08 00:25:00.408 T:1936829872   ERROR: Error loading the current image 117: plugin://plugin.video.emby/?mode=photoviewer&id=138
2019-12-08 00:25:00.408 T:1450652544 WARNING: CreateLoader - unsupported protocol(plugin) in plugin://plugin.video.emby/?mode=photoviewer&id=139

I've attached the entire log file too.

It may not be related but also when I click on an individual image instead, I am unable to press left or right etc to move on to another image. I'd say this is a fairly natural movement when looking at images, so just curious regarding that specific point as it makes it additionally difficult to browse when slideshow isn't playing ball.

I'd say the loading is also pretty poor for LAN, however with it being Kodi on a RPi3 and the nature of the whole linkage being somewhat "hacky-like" then I can live with that.

I understand that Kodi has vastly different methods when it comes to Pictures and Music, but just thought I'd point it out if no one else has. It's one of the most important things I'd like to share with others, all of whom use Kodi as their media players (for various reasons).

Thank you.

Anyone got any ideas for this? It's pretty much the only thing stopping me from going full-on with Emby at the moment - everything else appears stellar.

How does the web app compare?

The 'Play All' function seems to work as expected, left and right keyboard keys don't trigger movement for me still but the browser app has clickable buttons and mouse gesture control somewhat so that's fine if you're on a computer.

All of my problems so far (haven't got into Emby Premiere features yet as I want to see how this pans out since it's important for me) are from the Emby for Kodi addon and the way it offers my Photo library as mentioned in the initial post. Slideshow seems to just crash my Kodi, sometimes just a black screen and fills the logs with the errors provided and again with the left and right movements which is pretty up there in annoyances when using Kodi.

Ok. Have you tried the EmbyCon addon for Kodi? @@TeamB does this have photo library support?

I prefer the Emby for Kodi addon as it syncs everything locally to Kodi and checks in the background, in terms of video media anyway. The Live TV and Photo libraries are the only ones I know of that are still dynamic whereas the EmbyCon addon is entirely dynamic. This wouldn't be ideal for me.

I just want these issues to be known by the community and developers, and perhaps on a list to be looked at in due course. I would imagine at least the problematic slideshow function w/ the errors I provided are something that will be addressed in some fashion, especially with them being there as options to be used in Kodi. That's a bigger issue right now than the key navigation.

I have recently changed the way photos are loaded so they can be viewed under the video addon section. That seems to interfere with the slideshow behavior, so I will review this once more. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

Thanks for your patience. Please know that I am the only developer on this free project, I work on it in my free time and it is in no way affiliated with Emby products. I’m just an Emby user like you trying to provide a solution for Kodi :)

Ah fair enough, no problem.

I wasn't aware of it being non-official, you'd think it was with what it offers so I've learnt something there. Thank you for acknowledging the issue(s) I brought forward and using your time on this. I look forward to any updates. :D

Please install this build over the current one and let me know if it resolves the slideshow + crash. Thanks.

Slideshows seem to be working and I can navigate them by pressing left or right now - albeit slowly thanks to Kodi and a RPi3. The thumbnail system for that seems weird, it'll show thumbnail until you hover over it then when you stop it'll go away. I believe it was somewhat like that when I wasn't using Emby so it's obviously just Kodi being abysmal.

Does Emby/the addon have any optimization settings for images I should look at? I know it has artwork caching and then thumbnail generation on Emby itself but not sure if this does anything with Photo galleries or if it's just video library artwork.

Thank you for being so swift.

Yeah, that’s just Kodi being Kodi... I’ve seen it too.

Nothing special about pictures that I can think of. It points to a preset image url provided by the server.

Glad it is resolved. The fix will be in the next build.
