Server on Raspberry Pi 3B

Complete Linux noob here. I am trying to learn a bit about raspberry Pi and linux, linux based file systems, permissions, terminal commands etc, and decided the project I want to start on is a emby server on a raspberry pi I can use for travel, that will be attached to a 2tb external hdd containing a small portion of my home media library. However I am encountering numerous issues. I was wondering if someone has possibly made a guide on getting Emby Server up and running on a Raspberry Pi? I am encountering all sorts of issues that I am fairly certain have to do with file permissions. This is what I have so far: most recent version of Raspbian Buster installed and fully updated at time of writing; newest stable version of Emby Server(4.2.1.0 for armhf); small test library(2 movies and 2 shows with a couple episodes and all images and metadata from my home server)located at home/pi/embymedia/(i tried to connect the ext hdd but emby server would not see it when adding library folders, i think maybe because it is NTFS file system but not sure).

 

If there is a guide somewhere can someone please direct me to it? If not, these are some of the issues I am currently experiencing:

1- When browsing library in server dashboard, no images display for my media, even though they are located in the appropriate folders.

 

2- Playback Error- No compatible streams are currently available. Please try again later or contact your system administrator for details.

 

3- Cannot get Emby server to recognize usb hdd when adding folders to library

 

At the completion of this project i hope to upgrade my status of linux noob to halfway novice but any help will be appreciated in my endeavor!

I and others have had better luck getting Emby server up and running on DietPI than Raspian; but it is possible with the later.

 

You can see a video here for getting Emby up on running on DietPI (there are others guides as well):  

DietPI is a stripped down version of Debian (currently Buster for Pi), so it's light-weight (smaller than Raspbian Lite) and you install what you need.

During the installation process, you'll need a keyboard and connect it to a monitor.  During the boot up process, you'll see the assigned IP of your Pi and then you can use Putty or something similar to SSH to the Pi and finish the configuration process.

 

You can use dietpi-software to install Emby and it'll download the latest stable version from Github and install all the dependencies, etc.

You can use dietpi-config to setup a static IP, setup language and regional settings, configure system passwords, and also setup network drives and possibly USB drives.  I use a a NAS devices, so I don't have any experience connecting a USB drive to a Pi.

Others and I have had issues with the Emby 4.2.1.0 stable series crashing at playback, but haven't had any issues with the beta versions.  If you notice this once you have everything running, you'll need to update Emby to the latest beta.

As with others, Google (or Duck Duck Go) is your friend.  If there's an issue you're having getting something working, chances are someone else at some other time had the same issue and it can be resolved by doing a little searching.

But also remember, this only runs a server.  You still need a player of some sort to connect to the server to play the movies.

 

Luke confirmed with me yesterday that you can run both server and player on the nVidia Shield TV.  I ended up getting one, but am only going to use it for it's player properties.  Performance wise, it better than my Roku Premiere.  I had issues with buffering through the Roku, but the Shield doesn't have it.

Sadly the downside it that there are still some Android apps (Spectrum TV, Discovery GO) which won't work nor install on the Shield.  So the Roku will be sticking around for a little while longer.
