Emby Theater Desktop mode doesn't scale

Hello,

Just switched from Plex and loving it. :) but I have an issue with Desktop mode.

I have Emby Theater 3.0.9. When I switch to Desktop mode (from the default TV mode), everything is terribly small on the screen. It tells me it somehow disables DPI scaling. I have my PC connected to a 4K tv and native windows scaling is at 2.5. The TV mode works fine, but I much prefer the Desktop mode with the side panel and actual menus (instead of them being full screen).

I tried settings custom scaling from the windows properties for emby. It works fine until a video starts playing, and video is shown in the upper left corner of the screen.

Any help would be appreciated.

TV mode is a 10-foot UI, desktop mode is not. Unfortunately, you will just have to get used to the TV mode layout. Desktop mode is for people watching their content on a computer monitor or laptop.

Having the ability to adjust text sizes is something we can add in the future, but scaling the UI is not something typically seen in a desktop app.

That would be nice. It looks like all images actually scale just fine, it's the text that's the problem. Thank you

I wonder if you just want vertical mode, instead of horizontal?

Tried that, but not my cup of tea. I might have to run it for a little bit to get used to it though. Thanks for the suggestion.

That would make sense if computer monitors didn't come in 4k or 1440p. These people are SOL as well I guess.

I don't have either of those. Could you test desktop mode with a 27-32" 4K or 1440p monitor and report back?

I did with 24" 1440p  and it's not too bad, though it is a lot smaller that my desktop for example. on a 4K it would be unusable though, but I don't have one to test.

I have a 13" 2-in-1 and Auto looks good, it's TV Mode, but doesn't function with touchscreen or my touchpad or direction buttons or any combination of using.

I often use the keyboard for a lot of navigation, but sometime use touchscreen like I do in any browser or app on this device. It flits around and won't easily go through a list of a TV season, and it's dicey to get the episode playing you want to play.

My resolution is 2160x1440 and everything on Mobile/Tablet Mode works great, but is so freaking small. I can't tell a difference from that and Desktop mode, pretty much the same. In Windows 10 I have Text, Apps, and other things set to 150%  Scaling and it's adequate in most places. Just not in Emby Theatre unless using TV mode, but that's not helpful with my touchpad, direction buttons, and touchscreen stupid 2-in-1 laptop.

I usually use my Samsung Android tablet for Emby though, using my laptop is nice, but frustrating with ET, I love Emby Theatre in general , just needs to be function-able with a touch laptop screen that is used multiple ways.

I wanted to mention this is still an issue. I prefer the LOOK of TV Mode, but it won't function correctly for a tablet non-traditional mouse kind of 2-in-1 Windows pc. Tablet Mode should scale and if it can't, so be it, give us a touch mode tv mode please!

The scaling is set to 250% for my 50" 4K TV.

I kind of found a workaround, actually. There are 2 versions of Emby theatre. There is the Desktop app that you download from emby website, and it looks like this:5ec74ce026608_DesktopApp.jpg

Then there's MicrosoftStore App that looks like this (MUCH much better):

The problem with the Microsoft store app is that it uses a different player and all HEVC content that I have needs to transcoded which defeats the whole point of using EmbyTheater vs just web browser.

EDIT: I actually got the Microsoft store app to play HEVC directly by installing this free plugins from Microsoft Store. Apparantly there is paid version of HEVC plugin as well, which costs $1 but does exactly the same thing. The Windows Desktop app seems like a super buggy software now. It doesn't scale in desktop mode, it snaps to the top of the screen all the time and that's where my taskbar is, so I can't see minimize/maximize/close buttons. It even doesn't always work when I click certain things in the interface with my mouse so I have to click several times.

Found a different problem with Microsoft Store app:

The slider vs where the mouse cursor is. This affects the video position and volume sliders and the actual position of the mouse is always this much off (see screenshot below) from where the slider ends up. Can't win with these apps, although this bug is slightly less annoying then the rest.

I hope the desktop view scales the txt on the next update for the desktop app. The Windows store works, tho it looks like it has not been updated. Some media it has problems with playback. I really do like Emby.

I hope they do as well. I went back to Plex (and used Trakt to sync watched history) as there are far less issues with it (even though I don't approve of some the things Plex is pushing on users).

Thank you for your reply Luke, do Emby for windows and Emby for Desktop get updated at the same time, from the development team. I looked the build numbers and Emby for Windows 1.1.311.0 and Emby for desktop shows 3.0.11. Thank you for all the support. =D

Not necessarily, no. They do have some differences, so for example, if something specific to windows store needs an update, then we might just update that one by itself.

All this time later the Emby Theater Deskop app still doesn't scale and is horrendous to work with in TV display mode, though it looks great on my 4K 49" Desktop ... it doesn't work well with the mouse, flaky in where clicking will open something. Feels sluggish using it overall. Desktop is just tiny and unuseable for the most part, yes usable but it's ugly and frustrating to look at.

My laptop is the same as the post of mine quoted above, and it is even more horrendous to use with TV display mode.

I don't like the Windows Store version, so ....

It makes no sense ET Desktop version can't scale with desktop settings for the pc in windows. What is the difference in Desktop vs. Windows Store ET apps comparing why one doesn't and one does scale?

Both pc's I use to watch Emby content are bigger than 1080p resolution, so need scaling up so that UI is as it would be on a 1080p screen.

Please update something to work for this situation, many others no doubt would be happy about it too. Desktop/TV display mode combination with scaling would be a nice change for PC.

Edit: Ignore.....looks like I had an old version.....muppet......got the latest from Windows Store and all good...

I've just started using my Surface Pro 4 (so fairly old) and the dpi is terrible with Theatre, everything is tiny. Bear in mind this is a 12" screen:

No problems using a web browser, but I actually like the Theater app. Any workarounds?

Actually we made the change to reenable this, I'll get a test build up soon. Thanks.
