Emby for Kodi doesn't delete unless I trigger a Emby Server restart

I'm not quite sure how to explain this properly, but I just finished watching A Series Of Unfortunate Events, so I decided to remove the series via Sonarr, which should eventually trigger Emby to update too after a few minutes. I did and I checked (it was removed), but Emby did not send a trigger to my Kodi (running on Shield) systems. I've waited about 10 minutes and ran 'Scan media library' too. It didn't trigger. It was only until after I restarted Emby Server that it was finally removed from Kodi's library.

I don't have evidence at the moment but I've noticed this behavior (items that were deleted not being deleted) happen several times during the past week, as if Emby loses connection with the server during the day somehow (which in reality it doesn't and shouldn't).

However, thus far if I remove items via the Emby web interface they DO get removed from Kodi. If it always happens I'm not sure of though, but I should be able to find out in a day or two.

It probably doesn't help but I've included the Emby Server log anyway.

Edit: it can't be the Kodi Companion plug-in since I rebuilt my library this afternoon (or is it still bugged maybe?).

Edit 2: removed two things again and neither were deleted. This time I deleted it from the Emby web interface (which deletes it), but it remains in Kodi. Waited 60+ minutes.

Edit 3: 'Scan media library' does run every 9 seconds. Removing the rule and re-adding it (every 15 minutes) doesn't help. Guess this was a setting of Auto Organize that triggered it.

Edit 4: Deleted an episode through the web interface again and it was removed, but the two seasons (Specials in this case) are still not removed. I removed these completely. Guess it's linked to entire seasons? The past deletions also were related to entire season(s) (folders).

I've tried it with a season of The Americans which got deleted after the reboot. The Specials folders of Seinfeld and Game of Thrones are still located in the library though, even though they're no longer available. I don't think the log file will help here (because nothing happens with them) but here it is anyway:

Removing content was broken previously if you are on server 3.6, and you needed to update or repair your libraries. Sounds like it works now, line 1434-1479 of your log?

If you run update library in Emby for Kodi for that library, it should remove content it doesn't find on the server. Let me know if this happens again after doing this.

I have run the update, but the Specials folders still do not get deleted. Running the latest 4.0 beta, by the way. I also recreated the entire library yesterday afternoon with the version before (which shouldn't have the bug anymore by then).

Just came back from work, woke up the Shield and the two episodes it grabbed weren't updated into the library. I had to reboot the device for them to show up. I'm not sure what's happening here, but I guess it does lose connection or something?

If your shield is asleep, the connection is not active. But when you wake up the shield, it should force the start up sync to happen. The only thing I can think of, is that Kodi is somehow unaware the shield woke or went to sleep.

I'll need to see your log to be sure, put the shield to sleep, then wake it up. Post that Kodi log, thanks.

I'll have to get back to you on that. I decided to reinstall the stable version of Emby server and reset the library. That seems to work fine so far, so I think it has something to do with the latest beta.

Ok, well the best thing to do is to fix it in beta before I push it to stable. If you find time to do this, @ me.

Hi Angel,

I am seeing this exact same issue. If I delete a movie on the server, then I can see Emby picks up the change in the library. However, this is not getting synchronised to Kodi.

I actually reported this exact same issue a few years back, and here the errors was in the Kody Sync plugin - now called Kodi Companion. I am on the following versions:

* Kodi 17.6

* Emby for Kodi 4.0.1.0

* Emby Server 4.0.1.0

* Kodi Companion 2.0.9.0

And just to add - when I deleted the movie, Kodi was not even running.

Hi Angel,

Still don't have some logs for you - but working on a test setup on my Macbook as I don't want to disturb the house alter from the wife and kids too much  :)

So, I setup a TEST user and a TEST library containing 3 movies. And I performed the following test:

  • Uninstalled Kodi Companion --> Restart Emby Server
  • Add the TEST library to TEST user --> INITIAL SYNC TO KODI SUCCESSFUL WITH 3 MOVIES
  • Close Kodi
  • Remove 1 movie --> Scan Library in Emby --> Start Kodi --> After a short period the movie is removed automatically --> TEST SUCCESSFUL
  • Close Kodi
  • Re-added 1 movie --> Scan Library in Emby --> Start Kodi --> After a short period the movie is added automatically --> TEST SUCCESSFUL

I will now repeat those same tests after re-installing Kodi Companion and hopefully generate some logs that are useful to you. But as I mentioned, we did see same issue a few years back, where it was in either Emby Server or Kodi Sync Plugin, so pretty sure you need the Emby Server logs, as I suspect it is a similar issue. My initial test here at least showed it works without the plugin.

Hi again,

This is very weird. Now the above test works after adding Kodi Companion. But maybe that is what solved it - uninstalling, restart server, install, restart server. At least it seems to work now again. I will run some more tests, and if I can get it to fail, I will make sure to update this thread and upload logs.

One weird thing I am seeing. This new TEST library I created on Emby, is being listed as TEST (dynamic) in Kodi. All my other libraries does not. Do you know how this is?

It's a dynamic library, meaning it's not synced, but you can still access it via plugin listings like regular plugin add-ons in Kodi. Open the context menu on the library (TEST (dynamic)) > Sync library to Kodi.

If Kodi was offline and you didn't have the Kodi companion, you need to manually update your libraries to see the changes. It's recommended to have the Kodi companion installed.
